Welcome to the game I would sugest saying hi on the server forum that you made your toon on and also join that servers main global channels. If you post your server i am sure you will get some assistance there.

Have fun!

As for which AT (class) to try as a newbie, my advice is try them all!

Lots of people find Scrappers & Brutes a good first class if you like to be in melee, and Blaster and Corruptors are good for ranged.

Every AT has its fans and detractors. Take what you read here with a grain of salt.

BTW - we make a distinction between a Noob and a Newbie. You are currently a Newbie - you have politely introduced yourself and asked for help, which is what a Newbie does. A Noob is rude and know-it-all.

Welcome to the City!

Welcome Syfy! Hope you enjoy your stay; you've come at an exciting time. There are very good things on the horizon.

As far as what AT (class) to choose, it would really depend on your play style but I'd suggest for a beginner to try out Defenders. They aren't generally the most "super" of the ATs but they are almost always needed and appreciated by teams.

Good luck!

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

  1. Welcome to the game!
  2. Everything you've ever learned in other MMOs, throw out the window. This game is unlike any of those other ones.
  3. Enjoy the JOURNEY, not the destination. There is very little "special" at level 50 that you can't enjoy at level 1.
  4. You're not a "noob", you're a newbie. A noob is someone that's been with the game for over a year and still doesn't want to learn anything new and thinks they are always right.
  5. I'd suggest either Tankers or Scrappers for your starting archetype. They are the easiest to play and also the toughest, so you'll die less often while you are learning the ropes.
  6. They are archetypes, not classes, and they are supergroups or villaingroups, not guilds.

Well in the tutorial zone take out 100 of the infected and you can get the isolator badge. Its not an area you can collect experience in for doing it but it is the first badge you can get your hands on in game. For most new people i would recommend blasters it will grant you some range so you wont get swamped by mobs while you learn the controls. but you really cant go wrong with any powersets they are all pretty balanced. Starting atlas park is always a great place for new people after the tutorial zone. it is one of the most traveled zones in the game cause most places link to it in some way or another. it also has wentworths which will come in handy for your needs in later levels and you wont have far to travel when you eventually get sent to the hallows. when you get to level 5 you should consider a trip to the detectives in kings row for the police scanner.

also you might want to go to http://www.vidiotmaps.com/ and get the map pack that will improve your in game map and give you badge locations as well as other useful information on zone events.

hope this helps you get the hang of things

Thank you all for the quick responses. and the corrections . I look forward to seeing just what this game has to offer. I come from wow, swg, and many other mmos and so far this is far different. I am impressed with it thus far.

You'll find the people playing this game more friendly and willing to help. Also unlike WoW there are teams to be found at all levels you don't have to solo grind if you don't want to, cause everyone is raiding or doing the dailies on their 80.

Also, don't stress to much about getting to 50. Unlike a lot of other MMOs there very little content that is limited to level 50 characters. That isn't to say that there is nothing to do at level 50, there is plenty but unlike many MMOs the top level content is not the main portion of the game. There is content at all levels and for your first character it's much more fun to take your time and enjoy it instead of rushing to 50 believing that the game will magically change to something different then.

One piece of advice I like to offer on character building is the Fitness power pool. When you hit level 6 you gain the ability to take power pools and diversify your character. You will probably want to take powers from one of the Travel pools to make getting around easier but I would also recommend looking at the Fitness pool. The final power in it is called Stamina and it greatly enhances your endurance recovery. You will need to be level 20 and take two other powers from the pool to unlock Stamina but I would strongly recommend doing so for your first few characters. Stamina is not required on all characters but it's one of those things that makes playing the game a whole lot smoother.

Player Questions under the Player Help sub-forum is a good resource.

Another good resource is www.paragonwiki.com (Some people link to wiki.titan.com, same site. Due to viruses, etc, avoid the wikia.com wiki)

Most seem to think blasters (ranged damage) or scrappers (melee damage) are the best starter heroes (recommendation : Avoid the science origin for now, heroside, due to the Vahzilok are a bit tricky to get hit with right away) and Brutes and Masterminds as starter villains. These classes all solo fairly well right out of the box.

Enjoy

welcome syfy!

i found two things out pretty quickly when i got to this game that helped me tremendously;
first, MAKE LOTS OF CHARACTERS!!!!!11!!!!eleventyone!! you have the space to do it, so use it, make one of each AT, play them until 20 (not straight thru mind you, but don't give up on an AT until you've given it a good test drive).

second, let the folks on the forums know what server you are on, they will give you their globals, SG names, toon names, whatever, and it seems that the vets try to out do each other with helping you. never met a more helpful/friendly community, become a part of it and you'll make friends i promise.

oh, and make MOAR TOONS!!! just in case i hadn't said that already altitis is awesome, you'll like it, don't fight, just succumb.

Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

screw your joke, i want "FREEM"

Lol. so far I am extremly fricken impressed with the community here. I started out on Triumph. My toon names atm are Xrox and SyfyLedgend.

I would love to find a highly populated server. any ideas as to which is one of the top servers?

Freedom and Virtue are the most populated servers.

Freedom has the moniker of Freedumb.
Virtue is an unofficial RP server, where a lot of people (not all) like to RP.

In general, blueside is more popular than redside, with about 2/3rds of all players playing blueside.

An easy way to find the most populated server is via server load. The server with the most current load is listed at the bottom, with the server at the top being the last server you selected. You can get a general idea that way.

It's been said, and I seem to spend a lot of my time on this board agreeing with people....

No rush to 50. Have fun where you are, doing what you are doing. Some content is level-gated, but fun is always available, no matter what your level. We can actually turn OFF xp gain, and this was a requested feature!

You were smart to introduce yourself here.

If you have questions, ask away in the Help Channel. For example:

/hc How do I get a cape?

Or, ask in these here forums, above in Player Questions

I'm also a member of the New Player Council, doing what we can to advise and assist new players. Join the N P C channel.

The "Supersidekicking" feature allows players of very diverse levels to join together and assist in each other's missions, allowing everyone to be challenged and rewarded appropriately. It makes forming teams VERY much easy.

www.paragonwiki.com is a great source of information for this game.

If you like PvP play on Freedom server.
If you like to play with RPers and Awesome people play on Virtue.

Virtue is the best server, IMO.

:edit:

Our next free content update is coming in April with lots of QoL improvements to the game, like a mail system.

Our next paid expansion is coming in July, and there is going to be some EPIC END GAME coming.

(I have 14 controllers, is most fun to play)
(If you like melee, pick a scrapper or a Brute(CoV)

Triumph is one of the smallest sever population, but creates a tight-knit atmosphere. We do have our own Superbowl song

If you're looking for large severs, Freedom is by far the largest followed by Virtue.

If you're still lounging around on Triumph, feel free to send a tell to @Polar Ramen if you ever are in need of a team

Play Villains. They're more fun.

Brutes are good; Masterminds are sometimes a bit dull until you get used to them (at which point they become awesome); if you like stealth and one-shot killing your opponents try a Stalker.

Better yet try them all, and all the others as well.

Oh, and at level 5 you'll get a pop up from a contact called the Architect Entertainment Manager. IGNORE him. In fact stay out of the AE building altogether, at least for a while until you've seen the world.

And play Villains

Others have said it, but hero side, I think Scrappers are the best characters for a new player. Villain side, it would be either a Brute or a Mastermind. In all those cases, you will feel effective from level 1 to 50 AND the gameplay is straightforward.

One tip would be to make sure you stick around for a while. The higher level you are, the more crazy over the top fun you'll have from your own powers and from enemy powers. There are some fun things in this game, and so much to see!

I would like to add my voice in saying welcome. I also suggest starting with a scrapper, then moving around to other ATs.

Welcome to the game!

A few pointers:

In my opinion, Scrappers and Tankers are good ATs to start with for Heroes, while Brutes and Masterminds are good to start with for villains.

Masterminds can be a bit tricky to learn but they're worth it, and they can both solo and be effective in teams. If you want to try a MM, I suggest right clicking on your henchmen and setting them to "Follow" and "Defensive". This way they'll follow you and attack anything that atacks you. It also put them in "Bodyguard mode" so any damage you take is divided amongst you and any henchmen that are close to you.

Common Magic Salvage can be a good source of income for Heroes (not sure if this works for villains too). Hellions (found all over Atlas Park and Galaxy City) are a good source of it. If you take Common Magic Salvage to Wentworth's and sell it there, you can make some decent Influence. Ancient Artifacts and Luck Charms typically make the most Inf.

Thank you for the info. I am currious however, what is Infulence? I have seen it but not sure what it does.

Influence is basically this game's money. People will try to tell you it's not money, that it's some kind of intagible awe with which the citizens hold you, but you pay for things with it, you trade it to other characters, etc. etc. It's money.

Influence is what heroes accrue. Infamy is what villains accrue. They're the same thing, but cannot be exchanged one for the other. Kind of like an Russian ruble and an Australian dollar - both currency, but you generally can't spend them in the other country.
