The Most Convenient Way To Travel

I've always wondered this in the early stages of my Toon. As I just got my new Tanker to level 10 while in The Hollows.

How many of you deliberately axe (kill) yourselves if you are under level 10 and are waaaay across the Hollows and don't want to trot back to David Wincott or to train to level-up because you don't have sufficient travel powers yet? I ended up jumping in the canyon and either have the Igneous beat me silly or some high level Trolls...lol. This would also hold true in either Atlas Park or another zone that I am either way too far from my contact or my Trainer to level-up if I am under level 10.

I emphasized level 10 because that is when you can start accruing debt if you die. I have found this is the case with all my Toon's in the early stages. The heck with spending 15 minutes running back to your contacts, just nix yourself and you're good to go..hehe. Anyone else use this "die by travel" method in the early stages? Not sure if there is a badge for how many times you die "before" level 10 as I know there is some kind of debt badge "after" level 10.

Referred to this as ghetto warp in FFXI lol... I do it occasionally but usually I have the raptor pack by lvl 7 so it's not too bad.

I've always called it the Hospital Express. Once I actually thought about this technique that is, which was probably 2-3 years into the game. My first character didn't get a travel power until the high-20s, so by then I had already conditioned myself to jogging everywhere. I recall that I've even told dead team mates to go to the Hospital instead of wasting an Awaken and then traveling while I, who was still alive, jogged 3 zones to the next mission.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

ninja run is a very efficient lowbie travel power because you get it at lvl 4

self destruction is also another quick way to the hosp regardless of what lvl you are (will not give you debt)

i usually dont play heroside much because the low lvl zones i feel are way too big, most of the time i just play redside and kill stuff on the way to mishs because it helps lvl faster

I always called the suiciding to 'port to the hospital "taking the Red Line", since we have the Yellow Line & the Green Line trains.

Debt, even when you start earning it in the teens, is so easy to work off, especially if you have some patrol XP banked.

I've always just called it the "Newbie Express."

+1 but use the self destruct power from the cyborg pack to avoid debt and you also get to blow stuff up.

I used to use the old ghetto tp when my char are under level 10 too.
I haven't been in the Hollows much lately, but I would still use it Kings Row to get back over to the trainer quickly.

I'll back the use of Self Destruct.
Very nice for getting alts to the Hospital for Day Job parking. I never used it for transport to a trainer, but great idea!

[EDITTED after reminding myself what the thread was really about!]

Personally I learned to use cover and by manipulating the camera to get a better look of what's ahead so I can weave through the hazards of The Hollows.

Perez Park maze is still a pain in the backside at low level.

I've never used the Hospital Express even on toons under level 10. Even though it makes perfect sense and would save a lot of time, there's something about dying on purpose that just rubs me wrong.

lol.
I guess you didn't get the point.

It isn't the matter of having the ability to travel the zone. It's a matter of speed and convenience for getting back out of the zones or to a trainer.

I got it. But it seems silly to me to get defeated, get debt (yes it's not a lot anymore) just to avoid a two to three minute jog through danger. Heck the run to from Hollows missions is usually the most exciting thing about them.

We're talking about when you're under level 10 (when you don't get debt at all), or killing yourself with the Self Dectriction power from the Cyborg pack (which doesn't give debt)

I called it "Deadheading" until I heard it referred to as the Hospital Express.

But I think I'm going to call it The Red Line now.

And I use it occasionally even after level 10. Debt is a nuisance at most. As long as you're not obsessed with your numbers, it's just no big deal.

This.

I started the game with some friends who had heroes and were trying out CoV a bit after it was released. So I started red side. After starting on red side... moving to blue was about as much fun as slamming my junk in a car door. I don't think I have a hero over level 10 to date. I am currently working on a couple of them though, thank the gods for AE. I can level a lowbie hero without spending 15 minutes running around between every mish.

That said... at low levels, suicide can be a great option for travel. Always called it "Taking the tunnel" or "The Tunnel Express". Strictly habitual. When you died in Shadowbane you got a loading tunnel while you loaded back to town. So killing someone was "sending them down the tunnel" or something similar. Just an old habit that carried over for me.

oddly i have always know it as scrapper's tp. Because scrappers didn't care about debt, but how fast one could get to the mobs or a quick way to get to a contact for insp to take that out slightly bothersome AV. ah the good old days of scrapperlock.

Still, maybe I'm just to old and remember the days when The Hollows were new, the hospital was in Atlas, debt started at level 5, and all the mobs around the Atlas gate conned purple to help you reach the debt cap as soon as possible.

It was the adversity that made us better heroes. None of this instant zone travel and level four sorta super speed/jump. No base teleporters, heck no bases even, no flight packs and the dance club was a dive up in the red area of Steel. You cut your teeth on the council. You built endurance doing Positron's Task Force for nothing but a DO as a reward.

But nowadays you young'uns are always in a rush. When have you all simply took the scenic route, talk to the folks, bash some gray con critter not for reward but to see how far you can knock them? Those were the days when heroes filled the streets fighting the good fight against those whom even the police would flee in terror of.

Take some time and take in the view. Who knows, maybe you'll want to break into song.

I refer to that kinda travel as the "Tactical n00b Retreat".

Kinda agree with you, FX, I've never had issues in the Hollows

Hmmm, I have usually called it "Taking the Red Line." Or sometimes, the "Death Train." Convenient and fun.

Also, if you are too lazy to find a group to kill you, [Self Destruct] is an option. I do this in Mercy when I have to go from that one door across the zone back to the Mercy Fort for the very next mission.
