The February 2010 FArt Battle
I have retired from active competition and am helping run it.
If by "helping run it" one accepts "draws a picture".
Figured I could learn more by devoting the month to studying pin ups anyway.

To learn about pin ups, I recommend looking into the art of:
I consider Petty to be the key pin up artist, and his style of "Petty Girl" are what I shoot for when I do a classic pin up.
Generally, this means smaller heads, longer legs, and, very often, pointing their toes for no reason.
Bubbawheat-
It ALMOST works. The only thing keeping me back from qualifying it is that its more like a Redbook than a Maxim or somesuch. If you go the magazine cover route, I'm looking for a pin-up type mag. Or if you're doing a cover and opting for romance, something like a Harlequin novel cover.
Thanks Foo. I know almost nothing about pin-up artists, so I could certainly use some pointers. I will have to remember the toe-pointing.
thepinupfiles.com looks like a great resource for references. After checking out some of the galleries, two artists whose work stand out to me are Edward Runci and Bill Medcalf. Runci has amazing edge control, and I like the interesting backgrounds in Medcalf's pieces. Were they big names too?
Who's the artist that did Viv's favorite?

in my researches on Pin-up art, I saw a couple of things referenced in different places as being main points of the style. Realizing that such things are always subjective (or is that objective?), and that I flat-out disagree with some of the definitions out there - here's a couple that I'm finding helpful:
- woman in a suggestive pose but acting nonchalant or doing something non-sexual, such as cooking or talking on the phone.
- Nostalgic style clothing such as from the 30's, 40's, or 50's, or sometimes uniforms (military or other) that have been stylized into shorts, or 1-piece swimsuits (especially very unrevealing ones) from the 1930s.
- Some pinup art is heavily related to the early drag racing and muscle car culture.
Wow, I love Elvgren's works from late 40s-60s. He has both qualities of what I liked about Runci and Medcalf. Also love the facial expressions. I guess his style is what I am going to try to emulate...or have an epic failure trying.

Finished! Well I put about 17 hours into this one, I think. Might add one more hour for touch-ups tomorrow. I don't know that I can afford to put that kind of effort into this contest for each month
I see that, over the course of the painting, I listened to "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails 69 times, "I Sit on Acid" by Lords of Acid 34 times. That's got to be a record somewhere.
My hand hurts.
I wanted to celebrate Norman Rockwells b-day which is February 3, so I tried to make a pin-up that is reminiscent of the patron saint of illustrators.
Larger version is in my DA gallery.
Fantastic! Love the look on the lady sitting upright.
I just knew it was going to be good when Clutch said he had put in 7 hours already two days ago. I was quite honestly scared to see what he would come up with, and it did not disappoint. Awesome job! Now everyone will have to step up a notch.
Just noticed....Pyro_Nympho has 666 posts...

The Guide to BURN
Checks calendar... Holy heck man way to set the bar for February... while it's still January.
This has got to be the record for earliest accepted submission heh.
Is Foo not competing this year?
