Well, this should tide you over. Literally hundreds of literary classics for you to gaze over completely free of charge. I often read it while I'm impatiently waiting for forum responses to my posts... some of you people are so slow!
I am annoyed. Partly by the lack of info, partly by the mishandling of the original post, partly by how so many rush to defend a mistake, and partly because this is not the first time. Is it life changing? Nope. I am mostly just bored, I finished a good book, and I am waiting for the next one to get here in the mail. I can't speak for others, but I will forget about this as soon as more info is released, or my book gets here. I am a firm believer in poop happens.

Correct. But we have become accustomed with, that there is always a good chance, that some of the costumes on NPC's can sometimes end up being granted as new pieces to the player base.
Well, get out a mop and find something sharp. That picture is of a NPC, not a new costume set.

You can't blame us for being overly optimistic, this is Going Rogue after all, and a lots of us are excited to the *squeeee* level.
And all the rampant speculation, whilst can be seen as negative, also has some positive effects for the development team.
Drop us a teaser, firstly we get talking, and saying what we like/don't like about the teaser, and then players run off in tangents of discussion. You get a lot of feedback and mini-ideas from the one teaser. Whilst not all of it is positive, you get a lot of information back from us that can be used in further decision making. Well that's how I feel about it

Give us this costume piece (below), and I will atone for my sins, by lavishing you with grapes, donuts, your favourite beer, and plushy toys that you can throw over your cubicle wall at the back of BaB's head.

Remember way back in the day when this thread got started and everyone was like “WOW those are great resistance costume pieces, I can’t wait to wear them, splat, splat, splat,” and “Oh super keen, first I changed my desktop to a lolz cat and now my crippling depression doesn’t seem so bad anymore, because I have a reason to live again, I get to wear glowing stuff.” Well, get out a mop and find something sharp. That picture is of a NPC, not a new costume set. Me so sorry about that there wasn’t a clearer explanation of what was going on in the screenshot, I really am. You’re welcome. See how I turned that around, take a note kids. |
To expand on that:
Ever since I got the PPD costume code, which randomly turns on its suit lights (similar behavior to building lights) at night, I have been longing for regular costume pieces that light up at night or just plain have lights/glowies on them. I really thought this would finally be coming true, but alas... "NPC only" as it were. What a downer after such and upper, eh? I hope the set can be redone so that players can wear the outfit as well.

It comes down to this for me. I don't roleplay at all so combat and costume are my enjoyment. I still gleefully remember another player saying to me, "That is the most awesome level 3 I've ever seen!" one day. Always loved how I can look like a level 50 from the very beginning.
Its an MMORPG. Not an MMOG. The character costume editor is *the* quintessential component to the "RP" part of MMORPG. In CoX, the combat is a component of the role-playing game, it is not the totality of the game. Without the RP parts of the game, its multiplayer duck hunt. For many players, particularly the ones that do not hard-core role play, the costume editor is the beginning and the end of the role-play portion of the game, and the part that generates the most attachment to the characters being played.

Oh I *want* them all, but I won't be upset if I can't have them all.
But it is a bit like Pokemon - gotta catch them all! He he he.
I actually like the way things are.
Whilst I'd love to have every costume option to play with, I feel there needs to be a distinctiveness in appearance with the npc's, it makes them a lot more unique. I don't mind getting a couple of pieces of their costumes, but it feels wrong to me if I have their entire appearance.
I'm a bit torn over this one however. There are some that look so awesome that I wish I could have that look, but it's not something I'd lose sleep over nor be mad about. Either way, the way I see it, it's all good.

Personally speaking, I don't even like the way the system works where every gang has unique costume pieces that we can never have, from complicated things like Freakshow arms down to baseline stuff like Hellions having ripped jeans. |

Is it sad that the things that got me into CoX and have me the most excited for GR are both Masterminds? I got in on the CoV beta for Masterminds in general, and I <3 Desdemona so much for Hero!Mastermind.
But my ultimate favorite is that guy that glitched his way into being a hero Mastermind on Virtue a couple years ago.

OMG did that annoy me! I played the ITF as soon as I could so that I could earn that nifty cape... which I assumed was available. I was pissed when I found out that they had used that pic in promotional art... using pieces we could never get.
Actually, there's a smattering of a history of teasing us costume pieces that turn out to be NPCs. (See: Imperious, etc.)

I don't think we're bent about it. Well, not me really but it seems a bit rude and arrogant. This game has been sub-par lately and we still support it in hopes of GR being a significant upgrade to this game (my opinion and some SG mates as well). Then you get that antagonizing bit of dribble from a DEV. Honestly, it's not a big deal but when you go and 'slap' your playerbase in the face with those type of comments...well...it's not the best move. It hasn't changed my opinion of the game and it is one DEV only kinda stirring the pot. Ah well. A bit immature and tasteless but that's just my opinion
That J guy... He is so lying just to make yall get twisted. It is working.
|
I also think some of us may have set our expectations a bit too high with GR. Many of my CoH buds make it sound like they're expecting CoH v. 2.0. Although this expansion has been in the works for maybe a year, I can't see it being that big. Unfortunately, to extend this game's lifespan, it might have to be. Stay tooned, true believers!

Personally, I think they need to consider swinging harder. If they are going to be blamed for "arrogant, immature, antagonistic face-slapping" anyway, I say swing for the fences.

How does dissatisfaction with marketing translate into jumping the gun on the notion of whether these were player costume pieces?
While I think casting blame about is a bit unnecessary, I think perhaps also you are looking at this as too isolated an occurence. If you look at the bigger picture and see some of the general dissatisfaction with marketing (in the past, and currently), and with how Going Rogue has been handled in general, that might go a ways as to explaining why people might jump the gun.
|
Also, forum communications aren't marketing. Marketing is the stuff that shows up on GamePro or in magazines. Stuff on the forums is the devs giving completely non-required communications to their players. Does it behoove the devs to give their existing players tidbits to hold their interest? I sure think it does. But remember, only a minority of the player base actually frequents the forums. "General dissatisfaction" with something they do on the forums that they could completely blow off is another example of a sense of entitlement. The devs in this game communicate with their forum community more than just about any other MMO in history. We're spoiled that they communicate on anything like the level that they do. We can always hope they do more and do what they do however we think would be better, but to be angry with them over it is too much.
It doesn't help that I consider the implication that the broad forum user is experiencing "general dissatisfaction with marketing" an unprovable claim.

While we can't expect the developers to work on a customer-mandated schedule, we certainly have a right to be disappointed in what we're receiving, and to voice it. To think we shouldn't do that on a forum made for such things is - to me- what is preposterous. We are paying customers, after all. (And yes, I'm aware no one has paid for Going Rogue yet, but many obviously intend to, even if I'm not yet one of them.) |
I love this game too, and I get very passionate about some topics, usually things related to game balance changes. There are things the devs have done that I disagree with intensely, so don't read into this that I have my lips attached to any posteriors. When those things happen I express my unhappiness, sometimes in no uncertain terms, but I don't go after the devs on a personal level. Some people in this thread did.

There are far more examples of things they could give us but haven't than things they have given us. While there are examples of them giving us things, that is not clearly a trend towards them giving us all of them. It seems perfectly reasonable to have hoped this was an exception to the trend, but not reasonable (IMO) to have automatically assumed it was.

Wrong, the point of the game is to rake in money for NCSOFT. That is accomplished by letting us do alot of cool stuff.

To the first, I more meant that the dissatisfaction lead to jumping the gun in posting about things in the heat of the moment, or in going too far. And I agree that's what happened, I just don't think that going around telling people they've a preposterous sense of entitlement is any better than the mistake made in the first place, or a certain Developers not-very-funny, rude response to his customers. If I got service that bad in a store you can bet I'd never shop there again. Luckily, BABs, Castle, and a good number of others are indeed very communicative. I won't let one guy I don't like sour me on things in general, but it doesn't mean I - or others, in this case - have to refrain some airing our dissatisfaction.
How does dissatisfaction with marketing translate into jumping the gun on the notion of whether these were player costume pieces?

It doesn't help that I consider the implication that the broad forum user is experiencing "general dissatisfaction with marketing" an unprovable claim. Only some people in this thread expressed simple disappointment. Some went so far as to say how uncool they thought Jay was or how unimpressed they were with WW as a result. While those feelings may be true, I think they point to a significantly overblown sense of entitlement about what the devs owe us here on these forums ... and maybe in-game. |
I'm also not disagreeing that the level of communication is good in a more general sense. I've played a lot of other MMOs, and the public relations are usually garbage, or worse. But absolutely every screenshot, every revealed feature, every detail they give us of new issues, and of Going Rogue, positively goes through marketing first. It is marketing that tells them what they can say, and when, and what can be revealed - even on the forums. That the Devs get to actually pull the trigger on it isn't so relevant.
As to going after others on a personal level, I don't think telling someone you're disappointed in their performance is doing that. I think some of what Jay said was uncalled for (I get that he thinks he's funny, I just heartily disagree) and I think your initial statement implied in too broad a stroke that everyone who complained had a preposterous sense of entitlement which is . . . kind of personal, too. I appreciate your clarifications/elaborations, however.
Quote:
Whether you should like Jay or not isn't something anyone should debate. I do like his posting style, though I consider it very weird. If you can parse his posts, he's a straight shooter, and I appreciate that, even if I might dislike the message. I can readily accept that others might feel differently.
Its not even a sense of 'entitlement'. It's a sense of certain things, mostly costumes, could be better, so much better. And yet we are stuck with Jay and his non-sensical posts, his ego and his 'reasons' for stuff simply not happening. The Resistance armour here, the PPD Shell armour. Not robes, because I can understand WHY that doesnt happen. It probably would look horrible. The others? No idea.
|
I have no objection to the Dev's stance that NPC costume pieces be, by and large, unique to the NPC "factions". I can understand players wanting it to be otherwise, and I don't think there would be harm in us having them, but I also don't see any harm in us not having them. Decisions like this are more about feel and concept than something like AT or powerset balance. The devs have to decide something in such cases, and sometimes they are influenced in the decision by things we don't care about and thus choose in ways we (edit: don't) want them to. We can't say our way is better except in the sense that it's what we want, so we obviously like it more.
You feel that the way costumes are handled could be different in a way that would be more like what you want. Whether or not that's better is subjective. Hell, I might even agree with you, but it's still an opinion. Ultimately, the devs' opinions trump ours. All we can do when their opinions don't match is to try to change their opinions. Telling them they suck (not saying you did that) probably isn't going to get real far.
