Are there any names left?
No, there are no names left at all, Player 2098732897.
Oh, wait... that could be considered a name, too. Seriously - what were you trying to get? Fifty names? Really? And as for Mr. "doesn't sound like a superhero name," what does, exactly? Since, quite frankly, you can find all sorts of "non superhero-sounding" superhero (and villain) names, designations, etc. by looking for less than a minute. No title, such as Mr, Dr, or the like? Don't tell Mister Fantastic, Mister Sinister, Dr. Doom, Captain America, Ms. Liberty, Miss Liberty... No "made up words?" QNAX, MODOK, Ruul... No descriptors? Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Red Skull, Green Goblin, Iron Man.... No dashes? Spider-Man, Mar-Vell... No "butchered" words? Galactus should jump to mind right away. What else? Foreign words? Names with numbers? Multi-part names? If all you want is single word, sledgehammer-to-the-face obvious, then yes, you'll have problems. If they're obvious names to *you,* they were quite likely obvious to any one of hundreds of thousands of prior players, as well. Yes, some of them can get silly, but so can "real" superhero/villain names (see also Paste-pot Pete.) |
A thesaurus is a handy tool for finding alternatives (hence the list of ice terms in my last post ); the only danger being that sometimes it's easy to just pick a couple of alternative words and slap them together without making sure they make sense.
The point is, if the you are happy with the name you choose, that's all that really matters. Picking a name that works for you, that fits the look and feel that you want for your character from your own viewpoint, is what counts.
Ditto on all the earlier posts. Sometimes you have to get a little creative, and 9 times out of 10 any single-word or really common type name is already taken, but it's not all that hard to come up with a reasonable (or even better) alternative.
I'm especially fond of just adding a descriptor or a surname (instead of Blaze for my Fire controller, I took Xander Blaze, for my multi-colored energy blaster instead of Polychromatic, I went with Polly Chromatic, etc)
On a humerous sidenote:
My most recent toon is a shield/war mace tanker named "Tank n Spank"
Now, when building him I looked at "Tank 'n Spank" and it was open, but I didn't really like the ' in his name, so I left it out.
Several days later, he's standing at wentworths when who comes in? "Tank 'n Spank" (my costume's better though )

Hello, my name is Soulwind and I have Alt-Itis.
I'm one of the people who changes or removes letters from their names, but only if I can't think of an alternative. For example, I was going to wait for GR to make Captain Blackstar, but decided to go ahead and whip up a nameholder. The name was taken, so I dropped a c and got Captain Blakstar.
I rarely use numbers for letters (or l33tsp3ak, if you prefer) but occasionally I will. T3h N1nj4 Fr34k is a prime example.
Now sometimes I'll go to misspell my character name and the misspelling is already taken too. I went through:
Chaotic Deam
Kaotic Dream
Chaos's Dream
Kaos's Dream
Chaotic Vision
Kaotic Vision
Then finally got on Chaos's Vision.
Recent names I've used:
Defying the Curse - Warshade, hostile nictus trying to control him.
Abrakaboom - Stage magician gone hero.
Ether Voice - Sonic/kin defender.
Thus I echo earlier comments:
Just be creative.
Where to now?

Most of the toons I've named was by the way they look and their powerset. To echo all: Just be creative, don't copy anyone or the comics. Just have fun.
If there are toons out there named, and I quote: Satins Angle or Death Rouge ... or anything with 666 or evil (for a hero I might add). You get the point.
Just have fun with naming them.
"every defender needs to fight. I don't care if you have to use BRAWL!"
Try putting a word that describes the character in front of the name: Dark, Fiery, Ghostly, Nefarious, Cryptic, Stealthy, Outstanding, Sergeant, Last, Resolute, Mysterious, Iron, Purple, Mythic etc.

Recent names I've picked up on Virtue:
Blazeknight
Cobalt Bomb
Dancing Phoenix
Entropy Dagger
Magatama
Neon Jenny
Rogue Arcanist
Shardwave
Silverbuilt
Sorrow-Weave
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
If going for a rad based character, Large Hadron may be a good name (not sure if it is available on any servers or not though, since I'm not logged in). Then again, that one could get accidentally genericed by a dyslexic GM...
Personally I take the lazy approach with naming and give all my characters normal names. In general I pick a first name that sort of fits the character and then make up a last name that sounds good.
For example my TA/A is Marcus Taldari. Marcus I picked because he's magic origin and for some reason I associate the name Marcus with wizards (I'm not sure why actually) and partly as a homage to Marcus from B5. Taldari I made up to sounds somewhat mystical (it's probably a subconscious variation on something from somewhere).
My Warshade Is Blackhawk Quasar. Black because he's a Warshade and therefore a reformed evil guy by default, Hawk because I like using birds of prey in my names. Quasar because most Kheldian names seem to have a reference to astronomical bodies. But mostly I strung together different words along this general theme until I had something I liked
As for Adeon Hawkwood (my blaster), well I've been using that name for my main character in games for a long time.
Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level
Usually CAPS are used to disguise substitutions(Zero for "o", a lowercase L as a capital i)
One trick I do from time to time is add a title(Mister, missus, Ms, Doctor). They can be abbreviated, and "Mr" and "Ms" can be used with or without a period(a period denoting married status). |

I have a Warshade named Lilliana Draz. I scanned through my brother's Magic cards and conbined two names together (Lilliana Vess and Guul Draz Vampire).
I've used the name Bengrim (no, it has nothing to do with a certain Marvel character) for years in various games, but it was taken when I tried to make him here, so I added "the Bold" onto it.
Since "Mr." is abbreviation of "Mister", the period is recommended for "Ms." to conform in appearance.
|
Ms: A woman ("Miz")
Miss: An unmarried woman ("Miss")
Mrs: A married woman ("Missus")
All three are a contraction of "Mistress" (feminine form of "Mister"), with a period generally being used in the US while being omitted in the UK.

Also I don't believe the Op tried anywhere near 50 names unless he was trying to get some variation of a name like Wolverine etc. cuz after 5 years the obvious variations have been banned.

Seriously, this worries me. I went through about fifty names (or thereabouts, because honestly I lost count) before I could get one that wasn't taken. And it sucked. I'm not about to intentionally misspell my toon's name, and I don't want to (although I accept that it's inevitable that I have to) put g r a t u i t o u s spaces or periods. after said name. NOR DO I WISH TO DO IT IN ALL CAPS, BUT LIKE I SAID EARILER, I PROBABLY WILL HAVE TO.
Has anyone else got this problem? Anyone know a way around it? |
Be more patient.
Be less prone to drama when things don't go exactly as you had originally planned.

I was going to say something about creativity or the use of a thesaurus, but it's jsut easier to say "no, we're out of names."

"I don't mean to be obtuse, but your costume is acute!"

The harder it is to get a name the less likely someone else somewhere will have it. I had to recently rethink a name for one of my characters and have found one that's somehow been missed by others.
Lets say you had a character that had bones made out of something like Adamantium but using adamantium linked names is so unoriginal. If you look hard enough there is an alternative that everyones overlooked.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
