Are there any names left?
So, while the concatenation of the global in CO is kind of ugly, it's actually a more secure naming scheme (because someone trying to impersonate someone else would have to fool you with both the character name and the global).
|
As far as impersonating another player in this game. Very unlikely to happen because we have several tools that aid us in keeping track of people we know.
1. Server Friends list - Which keeps track of characters names. So if I have Superdude on my friends list and Sooperdude claims to be that guy I know immediately he's an imposter.
2. Global Friends List - This keeps track of players by their global names. A quick double check of that list will quickly reveal if Sooperdude is an alt character of one of my friends.
3. Private Channel Members List - This lists the names of all members of a private channel who is online at that moment. Most SG's I know of have their own private channels set up and members talk to each other on those channels. If someone comes up to me asking for an SG invite and his request isn't coming on our private channel I know he's an imposter.
4. Notes - Using the notes feature we can identify members of our SG's and rate them with stars. Notes are attached to global names so it doesn't matter what character they are on we can quickly confirm if they are actually an SG member.
5. SG permissions -
a. Most SG's restrict who can invite people into their SG. (I.E. Leaders)
b. Other SG's put restrictions on who can promote SG members within the SG.
c. Then there are the storage bin security measures. Each individual bin can be set so that only members of a certain rank can take items from them.
6. Base editing - With the removal of pathing restrictions a year ago Base Architects have the ability to completely block off entire sections of their bases for added security. The base editing permission is almost always kept under strict lock and key of the leadership so there is no way some schmuck can impersonate his way into an SG base and rob them blind.

Occasionally, I admit I do wish good names were easier to find. ("Good" meaning names that are stylish, descriptive, memorable, in English, and evocative of the superhero genre.)
On the other hand, I've had a few cases where I got a much better name, concept and character because so many good names were taken, so I can't really complain about a lack of names.
I wanted to make a rad/sonic defender for a long, long time, but had trouble coming up with a suitable concept and name. My original idea was some sort of post-apocalyptic punk rocker with radioactive powers, but I couldn't find anything good that fit the theme.
One day I snagged a fantastic name, musing that it'd be great for a nightcrawler-style teleporting hero. The only problem was, it still didn't fit my rad/sonic in any way. Then I realized I could portray a rad/sonic as a superhero with time and space manipulation powers. AM = speed up time, LR = slow down time, EMP = time stop, RI = teleporting bullets out of the way, EF = funky time/space distortion effects, sonic blasts = energy bolts that cause damage by warping reality. I picked up SS and Teleport for flavor, which also let me get 32.5 ranged defense and ghosting capability, and gave her a new backstory about being a US astronaut on a joint NASA-Portal Corps mission that was disrupted by Axis America's invasion. I ended up enjoying the revamped character about 10 times more.
The name in question? You won't believe it. Remember, this is on Virtue.
Warpshadow.

Hell, after reading elsewhere about World War II land mines, I rooted around and found a server where Bouncing Betty was not taken. It was Virtue, if I recall correctly. This week.
That's a classic genre-type name on the least-likely server over five years after the game's start.
Can everyone have every name? No. But there are still lots of possibilities.

I can't complain about grabbing names, though. Last three names I picked up were Strike Reaver (DB/Elec Scrapper - Virtue), Woodfiend (Plant/Thorns Dominator - Freedom) and Twilight's Jewel (Warshade - Freedom). The first two were first tries/choices, and Twilight's Jewel was a third try. I'm pretty happy.

Eh, those are better band names than superhero names, I think.

The same could be said about Twilight's Jewel. Nuclear Autumn is the name of my first Cyberpunk character. Had her going on 20 years now.
|
"Twilight's Jewel" was my attempt at a Star Sapphire pastiche, to be honest. But I also like to think it's what Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner would name their vanity band project.

For the love of all that is unholy; QUIT NAMING THINGS! The more you name things; the less names there will be for everyone. Madness. Simply Madness!
:/end sarcasm:
Whenever the "I can't get a real obvious (and probably close to copyrighted) name" threads come up, I always pause to chuckle. In the long run, it's all a matter of perspective IMHO. and those who cant get a 'great and unique' name just dont seem to be able to see much further than the end of their NOES. And this thread is pretty much rubbing their's in it.
And at least I learned out how to tell if a name is 'Being used by a character in game' (Name is in use) or is 'Unusable in game per Dev's caveat' (Name is unavailable).

Campaigning for Global Global Ignore Champion since 2009!
I had another "I can't believe that name wasn't taken yet" moment a few nights ago. I snagged Project Purity for a new Bots/Storm MM. His story is that he's trying to purify the cesspool water on Mercy Island when his lab is ransacked, his research is destroyed, and he is thrown into the cesspool water. The dip in the water gives him control over the weather. With no money to rebuild his lab or fund his research, he dusts off the robots from his "try to take over the world" days and becomes a villain on the side to make money.
I found that giving adding a common name before or following the name gives a better shot at getting the name.
For example I wanted to make a small werewolf character. As you can guess Wolfboy was taken. But William the Wolfboy was not.
I wanted a ice/ice blaster but all the powers were black or darkest grey I could get. I wanted Blackice, Darkice, or something to that effect, without success. So I went with Denver Winter (some of the dirtiest snow I ever saw was in Denver).
My dual blade scrapper, I went with Debbie Dualblades.
I did get my fire/fire scrapper name on first try Smoken Ashes (all the fire is grey)
Bot/Storm - (my quick picks, feel free to steal, hack and mangle as you see fot))
Gadget Galeforce (Gears .Galeforce)
Wendy Windup (Windy Windup)
Theodore Weathergear
- (for bot MM's I think company sounding names look good)
Weathertech

I was bored and wasn't really looking to make a new toon, but I was playing with the creator one day. Playing with body types and different outfits, and BAM!
I made a female toon with some of the witch pieces and I had an 'OMG I need to keep her moment'
I ended up making yet another scrapper Silver Stiletto and was so inspired I made her evil twin sister an MM Blaque Stiletto who I'm saving for Going Rogue for my Demon Summoner.
That's another thing you have to remember whenever they announce new powers people tend to make characters to save names. I know I do, I have a few others I'm saving, new character (I have to have a few pistol users) names Like Pistolwhip Crackshot I just have to work on the outfit for that one.
Just keep trying, eventually you will find one that fits just right.
