I actually have to. Well, I have to, I can't tolerate the low quality of air broadcast and pay for Comcast basic.

I already made the math, though, and UK pay about $20 us dollars a year for a channel you may not necessarily watch, I pay $15 US dollars for all local channels and then add some $30 for cable internet. Then again, US health-care sucks, you guys get socialized medicine. Not to start any arguments but I rather be in the UK or Canada if I ever got seriously sick. I think I would tolerate the high sales taxes and TV license fees.

The Two and The Three were already mentioned although no one noted The Five.

Edit:

Curious about this doctor crossover thing, when they meet, do they recognize clearly they are talking to themselves?

Sort of. Kinda. See for yourself.

There's a reference to this practice in Remembrance of the Daleks that confused the stuffing out of me when I first saw it (because that was on PBS in Maine and I didn't know anything about UK television law at the time).

Heh, no, probably not.

No spoilers in there for anything, anyway.

Castle's and Dr Darkspeed's links are both safe and spoiler free. Mine is set between season 3 and 4, but doesn't say anything that'll give the game away.

I've always wondered how the detection vans work. A television set, by it's very nature, is a receiver not a transmitter - passive, not active. So the vans are scanning for . . . what exactly, with those big antenna?

The linked site notes they were just myths made to scare people.

The Five, as I recall, was the 25th anniversary special, and delved much more deeply into the background of Time Lords.

In contrast to Great Beyond's brilliant spoiler, the good Doctor apparently does not immediately recognize a future self, only a past self. From what I remember, often the future Doctor announces to the past Doctor who he is. But there is an episode out there, I'll not say which to keep from full-on spoils, but there is one where the doctor (current to the episode) believes he may be seeing a future self, but is not immediately certain.

Believe it or not, there was once a Dr Who PnP RPG game out there, and it had some pretty good rules for time lords meeting themselves that appears to mostly match what the series does.

When a time crossover event happens, none of the Doctors involved remember it. Each goes through it in their own way, forming their own memories. Once it is over, the earlier versions all forget the event. The oldest/latest once, once it is all over, finally recalls all the memories from all the different viewpoints.

I can think of only one time that wouldn't be explained by this way of doing things. Sadly, that one time pretty much breaks it completely.

I think some of the very BEST videos that have been made is from a guy named Seduff on YouTube. His videos are very professional and cleverly edited. Take a look when you get a chance. A word of warning though some of the clips used are from future episodes so if you haven't been watching up to the last special Planet of the Dead there may be spoilers ahead.

I think a reasonable comparison to the whole BBC charge-you-money/no-commercials setup in the US is channels like HBO, Starz, Showtime, and Encore. Those kinds of premium channels usually have packages starting around $30/mo ($360/yr), which is close to the ~$230/yr charged for BBC, and depending on which one you're buying, you may be getting more channels than the BBC offers, or on-demand movies, or a TV package targeted to your interests (like sports packages, giving you all sports, all the time )

Well, there ARE a lot of computer LCD monitors that have HDMI and other video inputs, but no built in TV tuner.

I imagine those wouldn't need a licence?

You'd need an audio receiver to hear the sound, though.

Well, I don't know about those vans in that article, but it IS possible to 'read' the EM radiation given off by an older CRT, even enough to kinda recreate what's being shown on the screen.

The circuitry in older conventional CRTs did use a very specific frequency to drive the electronics, 3.58MHz for NTSC (US standard) and 4.43MHz (UK standard). I could imagine one could design a receiver to look for that frequency leaking out of a set. However most electronics are shielded so they don't interfere with normal radio (TV, cell, etc) communications.

I imagine in the very earliest days the task of locating unlicensed sets would have been easier to do and after a few published cases every year would convince the majority of the public to come clean.

There was discussion a couple of years ago to include computer monitors after the BBC started streaming video on the internet.

Sara what?

Oh and finished watching Season 1, got started with Season 2, that noted something called Torchwood. I recall seeing somewhere that name in a TV show... they related?

Also on my take of the "new" (for me) doctor: I guess he is fine but I will miss the rougher look (leather jacket) and the way Eccleston said "fantastic!"

It's a spin off series featuring Sarah Jane Smith, she was a companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctors... and since you're watching Season 2 now, you might find out a bit more about her

Torchwood is a spin off series that started after Season 2 of Doctor Who, so I can't give too much away

Did you remember to watch "The Christmas Invasion"?

I believe there's actually an unused version of a scene from the Christmas Invastion where the Doctor reflexively tries to say "fantastic," only to discover that it just doesn't sound right with his new mouth. A little upset, he spends a minute or so trying out different words before rejoining the plot.

Torchwood is a bit of an inside joke from the old series that's been turned into a plot point within the new series. I won't spoil anything for you, but I will point out that "Torchwood" is actually an anagram of "Doctor Who." The word was apparently used as a sort of cover name for episodes during the old days to keep info about upcoming stories from being leaked. Or something.

He sort of did already, but there will be traits of the previous doctor I guess I will forever miss. Looking back through older doctors it seems he always dressed proper or clownish, I fear the leather look may never come back, but never know what we will get with that emo guy that will come next.

I just hope they eventually do another crossover so I can get to see Eccleston at the role again.

That was episode 1 of S2 in Netflix. Although already read there was a 7 minutes mini episode in between, got to see where I can catch that one up.

As for the spinoffs... what happened in BBC at 2006? It seems they jumped from wanting to kill the doctors in the late 80s to not only make a high budget (relatively speaking) show but also to make spinoffs?!
