See, I grew up watching a LOT of PBS, which in my area was mostly BBC shows (other than the requisite National Geographic, educational kids shows, and occasional bits of opera). And that's where I saw Doctor Who (and yes, I found the two hour or so chunks delicious, not to mention the frequent 3-day marathons). But when they made the transition to boring ol' Peter Davison, I was well familiar with Regeneration. I was still as thrown off as you, however, albeit for different reasons. My exclamation at the time was "what the heck? He's supposed to be 'The Doctor' not 'The Veterinarian'!"

Kudos to anyone who understands my exclamation.

25 minutes actually.
When I first watched Doctor Who in the 90's, it was also on a channel that showed them like that, "Doctor Who Omnibus"

Funny about the BBC, Australia has its own version called the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, inevitably confused with the American channel of the same acronym) that has roughly the same deal, though we don't have TV licenses. It took a fair bit of funding cuts in the Howard years, but then again everything did (Howard sucked). And yes, it plays Doctor Who.

The old episodes are pretty varying in quality, and tend to be pretty long. The new Who is a lot more compact (and has MUCH better special effects) than the old ones. However, the old episodes often have at least a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 kind of charm with the terrible excuses special effects and hammy acting.

Funny note; Doctor Who was originally made as an edutainment show, time-travelling through history (kind of a live-action Magic School Bus). Of course that gave way to more sci-fi fare, but the historial episodes are often some of the best ones. (Dickens, Shakespeare, Queen Victoria are all awesome characters)

This may sound crazy but I would like to see a Doctor regenerating into a woman, but not for a full season. I would like to see that perhaps in a movie where he regenerates into a woman and is forced to regenerate again by the end of the movie. Also, no hottie, I would like to see an average woman past her 40s doing the Doctor. Heck, lets go radical: Whoopi Goldberg as the doctor!

Just saw Episode 6 of S4... does Jennie (or is it Geeny) count as a time lord? She did not exactly regenerate but she came back...

Wouldn't that just be Guinan from Star Trek TNG?

I believe the debate in this board on whether or not she's actually a time lord was left undecided when that episode first aired.

The thing is the head writter who is taking over the series didn't want her to die so he can use her during his run of the series which is sort of why she came back.

As for regenerating without regenerating, just wait.

And by the way, she really is the Doctor's daughter, the 5th Doctor, Peter Davidson. Small universe.

No one really knows the extent of Regeneration really... it's a bit odd.
Romana, a female Time Lord "tried on" several different forms, including different species before settling on one.
There have been suggestions (such as from the script writer) that this can only be done if the process in voluntarily and not if a Time Lord is on the brink of death.
But then of course, is the fact that all other Time Lords have looked like humans... so that's obviously the "default" look of a Time Lord... and then there's the fact that if you changed species, would you still have two hearts?

We're not sure. She didn't regenerate, she'd need a new appearance for that, I think it was the terraforming device that restored her.
Now... whether she's a Time Lord or "just" a Gallifreyian is something else.
Of course, the differences between Gallifreyians and Time Lord is never really expanded on... that is, if there is a difference at all...

Doctor Who history is all over the freaking place.

There isn't. Time Lord is to Gallifreyan as Human is to Earthling.

As I understood it, there is a race of people indigenous to Gallifrey who aren't, in fact, Time Lords.

That was a gag in The Curse Of Fatal Death. I don't think they'd ever do it seriously.

Tennant was dating the lovely Miss Moffett for awhile as well.

Yes, the Doctor was dating The Doctor's Daughter.

To the OP, I only found the greatness of Doctor Who this past year and now I am also hooked! Your sentiments practically mirror mine on thoughts, favorites and least favorites as well! I'm also a bit off put by the look of the new doctor but I have hope because I didn't like Tennant at first either. I LOVED Eccleston and hated to see him go but then Tennant had to go and be all awesome as well. Here's hoping that the new guy will bring something unique to his run as the doctor! I think a lot rides on the writers of the program to make the characters great and in Moffat I trust. Since you seem to have netflix check out another series he wrote called Jekyll, you won't be dissapointed My 9 year old decided to be 10th Doctor for Halloween! I'm so proud of my little nerdling!

Well, finished with S4!

Looking at my checklist all that is left is:

  • Music of the Spheres
  • The Next Doctor (but I know there is still more of Tennant so am clueless on this title)
  • Planet of the Dead
Once I'm done with those, I'm all done with the new doctor who serials (other than the two animations: Scream of Shalaka and Infinity Quest.)

Got to say I saw a few stupid things this season, why would they need Donna to go back in time and convince herself to turn left if anyone could had caused a traffic jam to do the exact same thing?

Overal I liked the whole seasson but the ending didn't feel as epic as the S3 ending. Now, ironically I still consider it better than S4 ending. I felt the whole superaged doctor monkey or the super powered psych doctor where cheap highlights on that ending, while the only cheap shot i saw at S4's ending was the overdone fammily reunion deal.

The reality bomb still did not feel as shocking as the end of time, for me anyways.

Scream of Shalka is actually an unofficial story, featuring a different "9th" Doctor.

As for Donna needing to do the dirty work... who knows, it's never really explained... there may have been a reason...

A lot of the S4 awesomeness came from Nostalgia at getting to see Davros again, so as someone new to the series I can see why it wouldn't have the same effect.

Still, I think a reality bomb is pretty cool... even if it isn't as horrific as having your future selves come back and murder you for ***** and giggles.

Perhaps she was a temporal/dimensional keystone of sorts due to things that had happened and/or were going to haven been happeneding (pardon my temporal conjugations, I seem to have misplaced my Guide for assistance).

Last night I saw the first episode of the show: An Unearthly Child. Its a drastic departure from what I'm used to now, specially with the constantly tired doctor. I'm here hoping he may stop gaping for his breath every other scene in future episodes as I think I'll keep watching it. You see, there is something about old black and white TV and movies (specially if Alfred Hitchcock is involved) that even the worse of the worse I find appealing, so although I'm not seeing it in direct correlation to the current Who, it still is an enjoyable experience for me.

This thought crossed my head today though... the first doctor died in 75, that didn't stop them from making The Five Doctors with a new actor in 83 to celebrate the 20th anniversary... would it not be amazing if they went back and made a 50 year anniversary movie titled The Eleven Doctors? I got to admit I would like to see recasting even of most of the doctors, as the ones that are still alive are a bit aged.

OH and has anyone confirmed which of these two will be the doctor's official permanent look? And for the love of all that is Who, please say no bow tie!!!

Sorry, then. The bow tie look is in, it seems.

when i saw that first promo pic, I didn't notice the TARDIS and instead thought " OMG they are making a Sandman movie and this guy is Dream W000T!".

I too an not happy at the bowtie 'look' but I'm really thinking Matt will pull of making it work.

Yes to the bow tie, the Doctor is supposed to look ridiculous.
