Reporting in to say hello!
Hi everyone!
I wasn't really sure where else to post this, so I chose this forum. I just started playing CoX a few days ago. My girlfriend told me she wanted to play some type of MMO, and after some research, we settled on this one. (I also play EVE Online, but that isn't for everyone, and I don't want to go back to WoW) We both made villain characters and are having a blast. Wanted to introduce myself to the community. I'm hoping this game will have enough varied content to keep us occupied for a while, since I know we are coming in 5 years late! So hello to all of you! |
Hi Kylazin,
Welcome to the game and forums! You'll find all sorts of good information and helpful tips here on the forums. Make yourself comfortable and check things out. 5 years going strong and it only gets better

i'd have to dig through the patch notes, but i'm pretty sure they eliminated the limit on the auction house storage a few issues ago.

Well thank you all for the warm response!
I suppose I didn't really do that much research before joining, so I didn't know about this fast leveling craze type of thing? Anyway, I bought the combined box online so I think that means I have access to both heroes and villains? We are very casual gamers, so it will likely take us a long time before we see half of it, and before we can start playing both sides of the coin. I'm glad to see a friendly community here, since EVE's can be very cutthroat. My girlfriend is quite new to gaming as well, so I am taking it at her pace. Glad to know that the community is willing and able to help. Thanks again! |

Every account ever now has access to both heroes and villains, so yes, you do too.
Some things to keep in mind.
When you hit level 5, take your heroes to Kings Row and your villains to Port Oakes. Talk to the contact that pops up and you'll pick up a newspaper/police radio. You can use it in most of the standard zones to get infinitely repeatable if somewhat bland missions, with a special mission at the end to rob a bank/protect a bank that gives you a new temporary power for every destination zone you run it on. If you take the mission you'll be introduced to a new contact, succeed or fail -- this is the only way to get some contacts for villains, and it's not bad for heroes either though generally they're better about introducing you to the next guy up the chain as your levels rise.
Build Advice I: You'll unlock power pools at level 6. You can pick up some temporary travel powers from the bank missions, but you'll generally want to pick a tier 1 power from a travel pool before 14 so you can pick up a travel power then. Your primary and secondary power sets are generally better at doing anything that the power pools might do for you, so only look into them if they give you some capability you don't already have. (I generally consider it pretty vital to pick up Aid Self from the Medicine pool on a blaster or any other character without a self-heal.)
Build Advice II: There's a power called Stamina in the fitness pool. For a lot of builds it's a gamechanger as it increases the rate at which you recover Endurance, which powers everything else. But it needs two other powers to unlock it, and opens up at level 20, which means that if you get Stamina and a travel power as soon as possible you'll devote like half your power picks to that by the time you hit 20, which often isn't too fun. But the game lets you create alternate builds, so here's my advice: at first, don't pick up Stamina, instead getting a feel for as many low-level primary and secondary powers as possible. When you get to 20, talk to the trainer and swap your build -- you'll basically have to reselect the powers one level at a time, but you always keep all your XP when you swap builds. Now that you've actually played with the powers, drop your three least favorites and pick up Stamina.
Build Advice III: This is more personal. When I looked through the game manual prior to installing CoH for the first time, these were my thoughts: "Oh, Aim and Build Up say they just boost damage for a short duration. They must not be very useful." "Unyielding says it resists all these status effects. How common could they be?" "So I can create these uncontrollable pets? Heh, that power's useless." For that brief instant I channeled the spirit of Wrong Wong McWrong, thrice voted the Most Incorrect Man in All of History.
Contact Advice: For heroes around level 15, go to Faultline and follow that mission chain. For villains around level 15, try to do everything Marshall Brass asks of you. This'll give you the "Entrusted with the Secret" badge, for being exposed to time travel, which will let you summon a portal to Ouroboros, where at level 25 you can play any pretty much any other early-game story arc or badge-granting mission you might have missed.
Money Advice: The black market/Wentworth's are actual real places that exist and if nothing else you can sell salvage and any recipe that doesn't start with "invention:" there for a decent chunk of change. The invention tutorial at level 10 does a pretty good job of explaining the basics, but that loading screen tip that tells you you can play the game just fine without inventions is pretty much on the money. They're definitely an advanced topic.

Greetings, allow me to introduce myself. I am known as the Cursed Sorcerer. Don't worry, I will not curse you, I only curse myself...
Anyway, welcome.

Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!
Welcome to the game!
A little heads up: in case you missed it, when you reach level 2, you get a power called Rest that lets you regain health and endurance out of combat. It's supposed to be automatically added to your power tray but is presently bugged and has to be added manually. If you haven't, open up your power list by clicking on Powers, then check to the right and click-and-drag Rest to your tray.

I played EVE for 2 years and I still follow it regularly, but this is where I really get relaxed. Though granted, EVE did teach me about spreadsheets.
Yes, I know that is the nature of all MMOs and I think I'm prepared for it. This time around though, we just made characters whom we thought would be interesting to play. We didn't look up the different powersets to min/max our characters. We are likely not the most efficient play styles, but thats alright because we are enjoying our characters so far. Thats what matters, right?

Welcome, Kylazin (and girlfriend)! Enjoy your stay. And don't worry, five years later, I'm still a casual player. Addicted, but casually...

Welcome to the game and the forums! Please check your sanity at the door, you won't be needing it here.
My husband and I have been playing CoH for the last 3 years and enjoying it immensely (both heroside and villainside). And I agree with Westley *gasp choke snerk*... skip AE for at least the first few months. Explore the game, see everything there is to see. Then go enjoy Architect Entertainment arcs.
And depending on the server you choose, if you happen to hear, "Hey everyone, look cool, I'm filming!" come over the broadcast, that would be me.

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions of the community. If we can read the question and if it's asked politely there will be plenty of people willing to help. EDIT: Also, if you get lost in-game this site helps alot: Vidiot Maps |
Wanted to second the Vidiot Maps suggestion - tho be aware it's a hefty d/l and install. Think it takes more than 2 Gb on the hard drive. But if the Badges interest you it can really help you find them.
Also - if you have specific questions as you go along, you CAN post them here, but you'll probably get a quicker, more to-the-point response over at the Player Questions board.
The freaks over there like to race each other to see who can answer legit questions quickest and most accurately.

Oh and did you post your Server and I missed it? If not, what Server are you two playing on?
Welcome to The Game, sir. Good luck leaving. Because, like the boomerang, you'll only get about 50 yards before you just turn around and come back.
Also, PLAY ON VIRTUE. We are nice, and very awesome. We have cookies, and kittens. And Kitten cookies.
So anyway, if you have any questions you can contact me at @Blargenwargen
I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Uh, no, I never mentioned the server we were playing on. I just asked my girlfriend which server name she liked and we ended up on Pinnacle. I'm playing a Energy/Dark corrupter, and she is playing a mind control/earth dominator. We just hit level 5 and 6 respectively last night. My first toon was a robot/pain mastermind, but I didn't feel like learning all the pets commands and such (too much like my lock in WoW) I'm having a blast (no pun intended) with my corrupter though. Was this a bad choice for server? Should we turn back? Re-roll before its too late?

Pinnacle, as they will be happy to tell you, is referred to as "the drunk server." Please don't ask why. You'll find out without asking.
Honestly, no server is better than any other. All have good communities, and more than a few people play on multiple servers. Feel free to wander about. Almost all will offer cookies (and occasionally kitties.)

Sweet! Pinnacle has been my home for almost 4 years now, I have tried other servers, but I just love the community there.
Look me up sometime, my global is @Claws and Effect. (You can contact me by typing /t @Claws and Effect, <whatever you wanted to say>) (The comma is important)
I have a couple very casual player friendly SGs you can join (one on each side), we don't really have any rules about your playstyle to be a member, just have fun. Benefits of an SG include: base teleporters for ease of cross-zone travel, storage for your crap, and ease of finding a team when you are so inclined.
I also recommend PinnBadges as your global channel of choice, you can find any kind of team on there, and it will help explain why Pinnacle is known as the Drunk Server.
Welcom to the game, hope to see you around!

Welcome to City of Heroes/Villains, you couldn't have picked a better time to join, what with Power Customization in the mix.
Some things you may want to consider:
- If you're trying out the 'Controller' AT, avoid Illusion Control unless you plan on teaming with the heavy damage dealers constantly... Slow set is sloooow (at low levels.)
- Mastermind AT. Love it.
- Experiment with Architect Entertainment, but don't look at it and say "Oooh, this can gain me levels faster." Please.

Welcome to both of you to the game and the forums.
There's a lot of terrific resources here and wonderful people in the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions, explore, and meet new people.
Have fun!
Welcom to the game and forums. As a part of a husband and wife duo I can certainly attest that there is a lot of arresting and bonding goodness that can be had.
Just adding my two cents here with some random observations:
* While there is nothing wrong with any server pick you may prefer to play on, there have been issues with Freedom and Virtue servers during unique events such as double xp weekends, new issue release, etc. They have improved this over time but because they are so heavily populated logging on during these events may be problematic. It doesnt hurt to have a few characters over a couple of diffrent servers for variety, testing, concept reasons or if maybe a server is unavailable you have another resource to indulge in.
* I introduced my wife to City of Heroes over five years ago. I stupidly said "Honey, just try it and see what you think". Two days later I lost my account to her because she didn't want to start her characters over and had to buy a second computer! To this day it's a wonderful way to blow off steam individually or just spend some time doing something together after the toddler has gone to bed.
* As a WOW veteran, you may have already noticed many diffrences between workings of this MMO and the beast. Many people will tell you over time that the journey in City of Heroes is most important and not the destination, nor how fast you try to attain the endgame.
Again, Welcome.
