Why is there an option to turn of xp?
Because it's remarkably easy to outlevel your contacts and the missions and story arcs they offer; the XP handbrake gives you the option of controlling your leveling speed.
to avoid out leveling content.
Ah, I hadn't thought of that. Well one mystery solved. Thank you both.
REALLY handy on villains btw, a few contacts cant be done until you earn certain badges,
Doc Buzzsaw springs to mind as the best example as you need the Bling Badge (1,000,000 infamy) before she will offer you anything. Plus if you past level 29, she tells you to naff off.
I've held xp on my stalker and I dont think I've missed a main arc on the play through, the only ones I didn't do were the Midnighter Club Arcs cos I'd out leveled the first contact when it was introduced, and the Vanguard ones.
It also very much comes in handy to keep Pre-Leveling Pact duos in sync.
Also, if your character is particularly broke (didn't get any lucky drops, etc.) you can disable xp to earn enough money to buy enhancements before the ones you currently have slotted turn red and cease functioning. If you get more than 3 levels above your slotted enhancements the number indicating their level will turn red, and you will no longer be getting any benefit from them.
(this is if you are using storebought enhancements, it doesn't apply to Invention Enhancements, because they will never stop working)

my friend and I use that option on a few toons at different levels as permanent place holders for mayhem missions so we can get the invader accolade it really is a good tool.
I am using it to generate recipes via tickets in AE to get the ones I want (for example Steadfast Protection: KB Prot at level 10).
total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
I have my exp turned off right now 1 bubble away from 15 as I try to finish two 10-14 contacts, and the level 10-15 mayhem mission.
If you're an old coot who has a bunch of level 50's, like me, and you want to generate level 35 recipes you can freeze a popular-on-teams character (like a Force Field/Sonic) at 35 on Freedom and every couple weeks, run through something and get a bunch of merits.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
There's also the option to freeze a character at 46, to enable sidekicking up to level 45 so you can powerlevel other people in door missions.
Since AE was added, this isn't really necessary - you can just run a map that SKs all your lowbies up to 45 automagically.
After i16 adds super sidekicking, this is getting nerfed beyond recognition. The plan is apparently to keep people from quickly hitting 50 with all the different power combinations they're interesting in trying. This keeps them on a permanent leveling treadmill, which prevents them from figuring out that there's no endgame and going off to play something else.
Yea, it was definitely a pain to outlevel a mayhem mission, especially if you are trying to get an exploration badge. I have one toon that was on the Mayhem map and got dc'd before I could get to the exploration badge, by the time I got reconnected (took several minutes), the Mayhem Mission had timed out on me. By the time I had earned the next Mayhem Mission, I had outleveled the map I wanted to go to and had to find a team that was doing that map. Possible, but annoying.
So, yea, I turn off XP to explore the content that I had roared past when trying to get my mains to 50 so I could unlock the Epic AT's. Now I am taking my time to see what else there is in the game.

What I used to do (and still sometimes revert to) is build up the max amount of debt when i thought i was going to out level a contact or miss some content . . . this would in effect slow my leveling progress AND help me work towards the Debt Badges. The only draw back is that after every mission i would have to go and get more debt and it was never a stand still, you are always moving forward in exp, just at a slower pace. Now that we can turn off the xp, it makes things much more manageable for certain storyarcs and content.
Current toon - Grace Under Pressure -Dominator lvl 20 Infinity

I had never thought of this. I'm gonna have to look into this the next time Im about to out level my Enhancements and don't have either the infamy or any good recipe/salvage to sell on the Market for quick cash.
Huh. I never thought of that either. Good idea!

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:

I love the experience lock option. Basically, I use exp lock to keep my enhancements up to date so I can enjoy playing the content outside of AE. I usually enable the lock, do an evil ticket farm, then update my enhancements. However, now that I'm a bit more market savvy I am thinking it could be a better idea to turn tickets into salvage to auction off.
Levelling is so fast and easy in this game that people often turn it off!
I would have killed for this option back in the day.
I hated hated hated outleveling the badge missions on villain side for the 1-9 contacts!
This is a gread feature, but I wish we had a slider to move from 10% to 100% in 10% steps.

For the same reason anyone does anything, ever. For teh lulz, of course!
I use it to keep on level par with my husband alts. I play a lot more than he does, because I have more time. With the exp off, he can have fun leveling his alts instead of the rather dull leveling without experiencing the game that he would have with a level pact, and I can play to my hearts content.
Q. Just wondering Posi, where are the new dance emotes we were told would come with GR?
A. Positron: Whoops, my bad.
1387 badges, and counting
I was in the options messing with my border colors when I noticed there was an option to disable earning exp. What's the point of that? I can't really think of any reason to do this and it's been driving me crazy.
