I16: Super-Sidekicking Explained
I have my feedback set to off.
Maybe if some people learned not to say Horrible things, I would turn it back on. I think TBH - MA Arc feedback should have like 20 or 30 Canned choices to pick from... and then the feedback giver have the option of leaving their global handle, so if the mission maker wants their candid feedback, they can at their liesure send them a tell. |
Cause someone might actually say "Thats a pretty interesting take on recreating the Carnie Party Mish, but instead of adding <secret> you might try <something eles>"
BTW the Arc Ive been working on is a recreation of my fave Mishes with a bit more to them. Its heavily work in progress.
If your feedback is off, so be it. I'm just saying that its a good idea of having some way of people leaving MA feedback. I have yet to notice anyone play my arc's, not to mention no feedback at all. Interestingly I dont really care either way, but If someone does stumble upon one of my arc's, i would like to see something even if its "Lolz U not m8k tem gudz, U sux"

Passion can come through in different ways... sometimes in rants, hehe.

Anyone who holds anything against someone for maybe making some ill conceived (or ill-delivered) comments is being silly themselves.
Didn't want to make this long, but anyways, I love seeing people stand up and be real.

I take it I16 is on US test, and not EU test?

Well the main thing to understand is that most if not all of the customization options where Jack's ideas. He was the prominent figure in CoH when it came to wanting to look different. As he has said countless times, he wanted a world where everyone was as diversed as the powers themselves.
What Jack did is make CO more Customizable obviously. Of course, things like power color changing and different travel powers where his ideas to begin with. I also find it funny that the sidekick system coming to i16 is pretty much the same as it is in CO. Strickingly coincedental timing aside....I do hope both just get better than that other MMO's out. And no I didn't play the PNP Heroes game, I was too busy having sex. But I'm sure I would have loved it. |
Now i'm not really sure why you're responding to my reply to Biff's post about how CoX is a ripoff of Champions' setting. Unless, of course, Biff is your second tr...awling account. Even so, my post was about Biff's post regarding the setting...
Just about everything, just the names of certain groups/people were change to, ya know, avoid being sued or something I dunno. |
In fact, the CoX setting bears much less direct resemblance to the Champions setting than much of the Champions setting does to the Marvel and DC universes. Attempting to argue from ignorance by responding to things that were not said or even relevant to the post you replied to is sort of dumb. Carry on. (i'm just saying that because i know you will anyway; i actually rather wish you wouldn't.)

i make stuff...
Well, some of us... Actually managed to do BOTH of these things!
(Which apparently, is a somehow inconceivable, "Herculean Accomplishment" in your... mind/eyes/opinion?) ![]() And FWIW, the PnP "Champs" game was "customizable" far beyond anything Jack (or anyone) would be able to pull-off in a computer game at this point - in the future... Sure, now not a chance! You could use your character points to buy, for example: an "Energy Blast" or "RKA" (=ranged killing attack), then optionally apply 'advantages' or 'disadvantages' to it (=things that modified the game mechanic of the power & the point cost) Armor Piercing, Autofire, or limited Charges, only (or not) Usable in "___" Environment, etc. Then you define the SFX of that power: flaming arrows, 'magic force' blasts, any sort of gun/ranged weapon, stale donuts & boiling coffee... = Whatever you can think of - as long as its only the Special Effects/SFX of the power - NOT the Mechanics of the power (that would require another advantage or disadvantage). Like, 'Bouncing' to reflect the shots off surfaces (To shoot foes behind some sort of cover, or around corners... or maybe not if you took "Line of Site" as a disadv. One of the adv.'s was Variable Special Effects (maybe for an 'Archer' that can produce a variety of arrows or change the appearance of their arrows - like the Color of the archers arrows . Or arrows made of fire, ice, acid, etc. But, "fire arrows" wouldn't set fire to anything, "ice arrows" wouldn't freeze anything, "acid arrows" wouldn't burn anything... Unless you bought them that way points - maybe via a "Linked" or triggered power. That would, or could - work much like a "DOT" power... It could be very simple or very complex (often depending on the GM) and being good with (mostly basic) math helped players quite a bit - although you could always get help "Building a Character" from someone else - often the GM or another player between sessions. And of course you had to explain your powers, = "run them by the GM" to get his approval some powers could "break" certain storylines/campaigns if you weren't careful - but that's true to some extent in most any game. Sadly, I doubt we'll see that much freedom (or level of "Customization") in any MMO or computer game, anytime in the near future. I can't forsee a game engine that could handle the truly massive number of possible Game Mechanics and the possible interactions. Or have the ability for the graphics/SFX to match the imaginations of the Players in a PnP game. Back to the point, no MMORPG's "Customization" of powers is even remotely close to "New" - and they sure as heck... weren't/aren't all Jack's ideas! The PnP/tabletop - "Champions - aka HERO System", followed by GURPS, and other games... Have all been WAY more customizable than any computer game published to date. MANY, many - "City of" players have wished the game was more customizable in a manner closer to 4th or 5th Ed. Champions, or GURPS Supers, or a handful of other SuperHero PnP RPG's. And, when CO was announced - as having the (unbelievably bland) Champs IP - and not the HERO System - with it's point based character building/rules/mechanics/etc: 'There was a great disturbance in the Net, as if the hopes of millions (Ok, 10's of thousands) cried out and were suddenly squashed.' ![]() |

No more hiding from searches in the Mid-40s to avoid bridging requests! No more pad requests!
And all I can say about ingame emails is "Well it is about time!"
One question from a long time vet here though is: What about the Mentor badges? Will they still be able to be earned?
Try out these AE arcs: 58376, 121698 & 143827
Badges? Did someone say badges? Sign me up!
:Posi states that the concern for bridging requests really wasn't as big as a problem as they thought! It was a misperception by the dev team!
|
Before we went and removed this playstyle completely from City of Heroes we wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing. We did extensive datamines to see how many accounts were actually participating in a “bridge” team, and were surprised to see just how low of a percentage it actually was. This may be a case where it is possible that the “advertising” in /broadcasts for bridge teams actually made the practice seem more pervasive than it really was.

Relax kiddo, clearly I see which you prioritize first between real life and video gaming, but it was never my original point , just a comment that struck you're nerve.
|
Still, those first two lines were (mostly) a joke - I just couldn't pass up the 'humor opportunity' there, sorry.
What REALLY "got my nerve" - Was the assertion that Jack had all these "original ideas".
And that's what the rest of that post particular post was about (like 90% or more) - that nearly ALL of those "ideas" existed far before MMORPG's, there were some MUDS and stuff back then but that's not really the same thing...
Well, except for the "con'ing" targets system, "mobs", "agro", and all the other ideas/things that the first 'graphics-based' MMORPG's - (pretty much) blatantly ripped-off, from a couple of the various/more popular MUDS that proceeded them.
I love the game, but I'm hard-pressed to think of anything that is particularly original. The character costume system is very notably exceptional - it is pretty awesome and was shockingly 'spiffy' 5 years ago.
I just don't feel like Jack, "hung the moon" - the way you seem to think he did - based on your post about all his "original ideas"...

City of Heroes didn't fail, City of Heroes was killed. If a 747 dropped on your house, you'd say you were killed, not you failed to find a safer dwelling.

According to all the anti-AE threads...people aren't allowed to hate AE or the people that AE... we are always wrong in why we don't like AE/ AE players (AE-N00bs) and they are 110% right...I gave up and let them farm.
I still do not see the awesome in this feature, I always searched for people in my level range and if I had to team with someone that was higher up than me I would SK manually.
if I was forced to bridge, I would do it with my friends that had already farmed 3 levels and left me behind.
As for the person that complained about the complaints about the increase in leveling speed...couldn't that be solved by adding more in game content to make level 1-20 fun? By increasing the level speed you only make it so that you avoid the content...it is the same thing as adding conveyer belts to the first part of the race!
With the devs adding MA I think I saw how easy it was to make an arc, make an NPC and wondered why it is so difficult to get more arcs instead of raising the level speed or adding AE so we can do missions.

No doubt the first response to that would be that GR will have tons of new content, blah, blah, blah. That's all well and good but what about the people who can't or don't want to pay a surcharge to play new content? The Magic Man arc was one of the most inventive arcs I've played in a while mostly because of the final boss fight but it also made creative use of the dialog pop-ups to tell a decent story without being as intense as 'the world is coming to an end and only you can save it'.
Tyger (50), Mutation-Controller Mind/FF - oldest Mind/FF on Union
Actually it's more like using your nitro boost at the beginning rather than the end when you might actually need it (41-50 could do with a little extra too).
That's what disappoints me that there is little content being added to these issues. I've played a couple of arcs using existing characters, maps and mechanics and we have the watered-down version of the MA tool. The last non-TF content was the new midnighter's arcs and since then we got the pathetically simple AE intro. Then there's the TF and SF that came with i15 which was underwhelming (and disappointing to do the TF at least). No doubt the first response to that would be that GR will have tons of new content, blah, blah, blah. "Issue" is a term for a large content update but does not necessitate a major zone addition. Really their are 3 kinds of updates in this game: Hotfixes (this happen in normal patches), world shakers (adding cimerora or Orboros, or Archtect) and large combined effects (like issue 16)
16 isn't a issue like adding Midnighter was but its combined changes are more robost, sugnificently, then a hotfix so it gets the Issue moniker because when it laughes your look at probably 70+ megs of data as opposed to 5 with a hot fix.

:Smacks Forehead:
Oh boy...here we go again with "extensive data-mining"...I love how this term gets applied to massive changes that inherently the devs feel they need to make, but can't fully justify it by any other means. I also don't understand why is it lately when the devs announce some new and interesting features - like new power sets or game content, they have to sour it by removing a game mechanic they admit to not really being a problem right off the bat! Posi states that the concern for bridging requests really wasn't as big as a problem as they thought! It was a misperception by the dev team! But hey, since our data-mining shows that requests for bridging isn't a problem like we "thought", then lets go ahead and change it quick now! Come on...the only reason why it doesn't show up in your data-mining is because you probably only looked at the last 4 to 6 months. Hello, that is how long AE has been out and there hasn't been a need for bridges - you already fixed that! LOL However you "over-corrected". If you really want us to use the non-AE game content again, maybe (and I cringe to suggest this) simply turn off auto-SKing in AEs or apply this new system only to AEs and people will eventually not abuse it (I mean enjoy it) so much. They will go back to the more "balanced" system that already exists! Now, you may reply with "well we don't want to see the spam of bridging again" ...well again, sounds like you "added" a new mechanic that is going to be awesome which is the email/broadcast filter. Based on actual game play (not short-term "extensive data-mining"), it's the broadcasting and emails that annoy people the most. If other players don't see how some other players choose to play the game, then obviously they can't complain about it. Hence, 1) add broadcast/email filters, 2) leave SKing alone or add your new way as an "option", 3) Fix AE so it doesn't auto SK and allow it to be the alternate mission creator it was intended to be. Ultimately, the dev team really needs to consider how far it "over-corrects" a problem they recently created and not practically re-write the entire game in one issue. It was bad enough you couldn't adjust certain ATs for PvP, now you are taking that same philosophy to PvE. PLEASE seriously consider this new CoX 2.0 before you force it on us! |
Sure they change up bugs, but other than that? Might as well be talking to a brick wall, or me. See: Purple Patch, ED, GDN, Issue 13 PVP, Aggro Cap, Target Cap, etc.
Anyways, glad you guys think this is an awesome idea, but if you think this is somehow going to solve the 'problem' that AE has been 'creating' lately, it won't. Hell, I don't really mind whether or not I'm doing AE or regular missions, but lately I've just become so damn lazy I'd just rather do AE stuff than run around a zone. Some toons now I don't even have to take a travel power! Tickets are also really sweet; it's nice being able to replace/add Enhancements as you need/get them by using tickets instead of destroying your bank roll trying to buy them, or hoping that you'll get the one you need off a enemy. I can effectively keep my slots from going broken from about twenty something to 50 without having to spend a dime. (I don't usually bother buying enhancements early on, since I'm ripping through those low levels so fast I end up breaking up my Enny's within one or two runs.)
Now, I know they wanted AE to be some sort of alternate route to maxing out your levels. I don't have hard facts, I can't data mine. The Devs can and I'm more than certain that more people are using AE as their main form of leveling than regular content. In fact, I'm damn sure.
I'm not if the devs really care if people are doing more AE than regular content, but if they wanted to balance the scales, kind of, they would need to make regular mission-ing a bit more attractive. So, whats the main reward advantage that regular mission-ing has over AE? Purples. AE is being used more because you 1. Level faster. 2. Get tickez. 3. Purples are hard to come by (for me at least, has to be some other people that don't seem to ever get them [pre-Ae, shut up]) and cost a **** ton. If they made Purples more accessible, then maybe people would be more willing to go out and do some regular mission stuff every once in a while.
Sure, the new option to set team size to 8 and solo farm is a good way to do that; that maximizes your chances of getting one. But your casual player isn't really up for that, they like to team.
How many of you are familiar with the Streakbreaker system tied into Defense? Bueller? Bueller? Basically, the more times you successfully dodge or avoid an attack, the greater chance the next attack will hit. Why not incorporate a Purplebreaker (Copyright me) system? Basically, the longer you go without getting a purple drop, the better your chances of getting one.
Reading comprehension is important starting now.
Obviously, this could be abused if done incorrectly. You couldn't base it off of 'real time' as players would just park their 50's for the correct amount of time to maximize their chances; we'd want this to be more active, not like day jobs. I'm not sure if this would be 'feasible', but since the devs datamine for time periods, I'm pretty sure they can track how many of what somebody has killed. And there's your answer.
No? Ah, well it works like this: The game keeps track of how many "Purple drop qualified" enemies you've defeated. The longer you go without getting a purple from these guys, the better your chances of getting one. I'd probably keep the minimum level to start this system like 45...47? As level ones can get level 50 recipe drops if they're teamed up with a level 50 team. (I'm not sure if that 'qualifies them, under the current system, to get purples, I'm guessing not so, bear with).
Example: Player has killed zero qualified enemies, chance for purple 2%. (I don't know what exactly the drop rate is, I'm just using that figure for this example).
Player has killed 500 qualified enemies, no purple drop, chance for purple increased to 5%.
Player has killed 2000 qualified enemies, no purple drop, chance for purple increased to 8%
Player has killed 10 billion qualified enemies, no purple drop, chance for purple increased to 20%
And so on. Obviously, the number of qualified enemies needed for a drop rate increase would need to be carefully picked at to make it feasible, but not downright easy to get this. Once you've got your purple, your chance to get resets to base value. This would entice your casual players to venture out, knowing that they will MORE THAN LIKELY get a shiney every once in a while, and also (hopefully) keep farmers happy knowing that they're still getting about the same rate of drops anyways.
(I'm not Arcanaville, so I'm not exactly sure if that last statement is true...lawl)
Actually you can get a purple on a low level. Its a drop on the enemy, so as long as your fighting50s theirs a purple chance, i know a few sub 40s who got purples...
