Has server load on 2xp weekend caused the servers to go down in the past? I've been around for 3 or 4 2xp weekends and never seen them go down. Was this before they changed the code so that they grey out?

Yes.

Before, the servers were also older. It was quite common to see servers crash during Double XP.

This double XP weekend, people are coming here on the forums, whining about the fact population was too low and from that concluding that AE is killing CoH, and they'd be better off jumping off a sinking boat by cancelling their subscription.

After the PvP changes, people would come here on the forums, whining about how PvP is lame and how it is unbalanced and how they are gonna quit the game over it.

Before AE was developed, people would come here on the forums, whining about how slow leveling was. Every 5 days, someone would post a thread in suggestions board that veterans should have an option to start a character at level 20. They would go on and on about how the content in this game was so boring and that they were getting tired of "beating the same old mobs" over and over again, and for this, they were gonna move on to a more shiny game.

After AE was developed, people would come here on the forums, whining about how leveling is too fast. Every 5 days, someone posts a thread about AE ruining CoH. They go on and on about how AE is being abused and that devs aren't doing anything about it and how going from level 1 to 50 in a few days is an unforgivable sin. They complain about how playing in AE is boring cause you beat on the same old mobs over and over again, and for this, they feel like CoH is dying and they should leave before its too late.

Notice a trend here?

The developers of this game have spoiled some people way too much.
You forgot the posts that people make in those threads complaining about the thread. There are also the people that point out how stupid those posts are. But pointing out the stupid in a post is just as stupid as the stupid post.

Mostly the higher population servers aka freedom and virtue.

I was less buzzed about this dblXP weekend.

A mix of patrol XP & altitis means most of the time I'm playing at 1.5XP so the extra 0.5 isn't the big draw card.

I was hoping for reactivation weekend as well, 'cause I like the extra load of teamage to happen. Wasn't _hard_ to find teams by any means, but it wasn't overflowing which has been my impression from previous dblXP weekends

Mapserved a lot on Virtue on the sat night (US time). But nothing too painful, or much more than my usual.

Was a lot of fun. Popped the holiday spirit debt protection on most of my toons, and went crazy. Lots of low teen toons into 20's, a few into 30's.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Gods YES! I would love this also.

My Double XP weekend was non-existent, Friday I had thunderstorms, even after they passed my internet connection was intermittent for hours. Saturday I was busy all day (in a good way), and Sunday was thunderstorms again!

TWO level 50s in one weekend. *sigh*

'Course, I'm reading that as 1-50...quite possible that they were 35's, 49's, whatever.

But....*points to "Remember when getting to 50 was an actual accomplishment?" thread*.

For me, this weekend was my own personal "AE has ruined CoH for me" weekend.

After trying for quite a long time (in relative terms (vs. non-dbl-xp)) to put together a mish team, being rejected, JOINed/QUIT when they realized I was doing regular mish, etc. I thought I'd make my 3rd foray into AE, after two disasterous initial experiences in the past few weeks.

Joined AE team - it's a boss farm on the same old boring city-block map. First mob, team wipes, except me - I run for Exit and Quit team.

Try broadcasting for a non-farm AE team - and wait - and broadcast - and wait - no luck.

Decide to start my own team on a non-farm AE mish. Something recommended here on the boards: Have a Blap, Blap, Blappity Day!

Form 8-man team, enter mish, 5 members start wailing about HEY - THIS ISN'T A FARM! and Quit.

One left-over says "You should have specified this was not a farm".

!!!!!!! <censored><censored><censored><censored><censored> <censored><censored>!!!!!!

Now *I* have to specify it's NOT a farm???? <censored><censored><censored><censored>

I ask, Why does it have to be a farm?

Reply: I have to get to 50 this weekend!

Me: Why?

Reply: <none>

Team dissolves.

I get a Tell: Want to join team for a MISH in RWZ?

Hellz yeah!!! Travel to RWZ - Join team - it's a Farm team in the RWZ AE.

Gave the leader a piece of my mind - not specifying Farm - stating in fact that it was a MISH team.

Told the team that, that's it for me and AE, I'm never coming in here, ever again.

And I won't.

I hate it in there, I've never had a single good experience in AE in 6 attempts.

I finally gutted it out in the "real world" - put together an 8-man mish team and had one of the best teaming runs EVER, in 3 years of play.

Screw AE - I had high hopes, I was really looking forward to it. But turns out it's a freakin' disaster that has completely warped what CoH USED TO be all about.

Double XP weekend just made it that much worse.

Yes, this generally describes my experience. I found the usual level of activity when I logged in, and don't believe I ever saw any deviation from the usual server loads (i.e. Freedom and Virtue at two yellow dots, all others at a single green dot). I didn't see any increase in terms of teaming activity, TFs, etc. Granted, this is just one man's experience, but I'd have to agree with the OP: from my point of view, this didn't feel like a usual 2XP weekend at all. Felt like any other day.

The colored dots do not indicate population - they indicate server load, which is a good predictor of how much lag you will experience. Since the servers were upgraded, they go red much less often. This is a good thing, and is not a sign of lower population.

Personally, I had a great time. I love doing TF's and did 9 this weekend.

My anecdotal impression of population was that it was very high. My yardstick is how many people on my global list were online.

I played a whopping 4 hours this dbl xp weekend and gained a total of 25 levels. All my levels were done on mish teams.

I don't mind AE it tends to keep the subpar players in one central location

There were several reasons for lower server populations on Farmdom and Virtue.

Some players are actually moving away from playing on Farmdom and Virtue because they are the worst for AE farming/pl'ing/exploiting.
I know that I'm haven't played on either one of them for a couple of months now because of the rampant AE abuse there. I drop into pay base rent and set up some trades on the market every now and then, but I don't team there at all any more and won't until this situation calms down.
Oh, well my highest average character levels are highest on those two servers at any rate. Better to give the other servers some more love at this point anyway.

Another reason is that this wasn't a "welcome back"/account reactivation weekend - this usually corresponds with 2XP Weekend. I'm glad it didn't this time.

New player bad experience when entering the starting zones fulled with AE spams and not being able to find low level teams? Were there a lot of sewer teams running? Were there any activities for new players to get involved with recently? Anyone running any low level content to help players learn how to enjoy playing the game?

New players joining and burning out on farming or pl'd to "win"? If you are jaded to the game, farming is fun to some. If you are looking to play a superhero game and you are told to sit there and do nothing while others play or just fight the same thing all the time, it gets pretty boring. Some players only play a MMORPG to get a 50 and once that happens, they have "won the game", and are done with it.

Yeah, I wasn't too excited about 2XP Weekend either, especially after I found out that the DEVs slipped up and allowed 2XP in the AE as well. Heck, I was running on x1.5XP with Patrol XP on most of my characters already so the 2XP just stacked on top of that!

The servers do not ever go to red anymore. If I remember correctly, after they upgraded the servers, they made it such that if it -did- go into red, it would automatically gray out. So you wouldn't actually ever see a server go into the red zone anymore. It goes straight to gray after yellow.

Reasonable. I'd actually be quite happy if this was true. I would find it nice to see the population spread out a little over to the less populated servers.

I'm glad to know people aren't blind to this fact.

Reasonable. But that's why I try to guide the new players away from AE. I don't want to call myself a veteran, but I know at least a bit more than the average player when it comes to CoH. That's why, if I ever see a new player in AE, I kindly suggest them to try the game content. So far, I have had a lot of positive response from these people. And with that, I feel like I've done my share when it comes to "helping players learn how to enjoy playing the game".

Regardless, I'm not in a position to tell people, new or not, how they -should- enjoy the game. Sometimes the new players also like to farm. And if they end up being AE-babies...*shrug*...they won't be hopping on my teams for TFs any time soon. :P

This is more like a rant than a reason. I don't consider getting a level 50 character is "winning". And I'm not jaded to the game. I love the game. I have had my share of level 50 characters leveled the old-fashioned way. After all this time, I enjoy seeing them beat down and devour armies of enemies most people can't touch. I enjoy being a lead Brute in a farm mission. I enjoy seeing all those orange numbers fly across my screen. I enjoy the challenge. And that challenge comes with good rewards!

Double XP stacks with Patrol XP? This is an honest question. I always thought they didn't. *shrug*

Guess I learn something new everyday!

Right now, I think teaming with friends or soloing stories you like the look of is the best way to play the AE if you're not into farming/PLing.
If you're with friends, and the object is just to play through interesting missions in the AE, then you can have just as much fun there as in normal missions.

Seeing the devs on would be great, would love to see that! But dblxp lasts all weekend 24hours/day, and I doubt the devs will be on around the clock like that, so for those in different countries, it would be yet another timezone exclusive.

edit: wow, this post got me bad rep?

I'd say more fun. I remember taking a strong solo character through the Footsteps Initiative and the Pandas vs Rikti arcs; both had me laughing out loud. But those arcs (and many other well-written ones) really reward you taking the time to read all the dialog, clues, contact text, etc. I always feel too rushed on a PuG to do that.

EDIT: as long as I'm recommending arcs, I better include Saul Rubenstien's Discount Task Force by Ascendant, and Turg Fiction: Ghost in the Machine, Act 1 by Turvenev

Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.

Playing at night/early morning (think like 4 AM), I was able to team on freakin PINNACLE for cryin out loud! A PuG! Running NONFARM MISSIONS! I was quite shocked!! My MM there, who is my second toon ever, may end up reaching 50 yet.

I also got to PuG all sorts of missions on (nonlaggy) Freedom, only doing any AE stuff when I felt like it.

For me, this weekend was actually more of a return to normal, if anything. It was refreshing.

Double XP did NOT stack with patrol xp. I had a few toons that I got some levels on that had sat for some time. Lots of patrol xp. Total patrol xp only got reduced by paying off debt and it just looked like it got smaller due to the amount of it was a smaller % of your newer level(s).

Yep. I was let down IMMENSELY by the lack of people. I had very limited hours of play, and Justice didn't seem any more busy than usual. Don't get me wrong, the XP boost was grand, but if it was supposed to draw bigger server populations, it failed.

I'm still wondering why we have so many servers w/o consolidation yet?

Oh, and Friends of mine were VERY busy playing on the Aion playsession this weekend.

They'd have to turn off the diminishing returns code then, at least for villains. A motivated team can do all the SFs redside AND the co-ops, in a single day....then be left with nothing to do but regular mission arcs (which aren't nearly as challenging) until they run out of those too.

It's funny, I had no trouble getting into any teams at any level range, inside or outside of AE. This was on Infinity (red), Virtue (both), Victory (blue), and Guardian (blue). Most of the time, I didn't even LFT. When going to Sharkhead to talk to Lorenz Ansaldo, I jumped in a level 22ish mission team and stole my cape from a hero (several times, since four people in the team had the mission). Then again, I spent most of the weekend teamed with friends on the mentioned servers though I did the PUG thing when they went to bed (since I didn't :P).
