Now this is odd.

Less the 24hrs after I post a comment asking for the cloak & dagger act to be dropped we get yet another post full of cloak & dagger stuff.

WHATS WRONG WITH COMING OUT AND TELLING US WHAT YOU'VE GOT PLANNED???

Very little of that post is new info. I'm sure we all know the MA is full of "under the hood" stuff, and yes we understand that its a big job, so it would fill a whole issue in it's self - but why oh why say "and some other stuff".

I'm left with the impression that the "stuff" is of so little value that the devs are imbarrassed by it, and it shames them.

On the subject of animations for Dual Pistols, anyone know how I could get a demorecord onto YouTube? Tried recording an .avi file with Fraps and then uploading that, but it failed every time despite being roughly 3 seconds of video, 63 mb large.

Because if they say we have X coming, and X can't be done in time so they have to bump it back, there will be a massive out cry. Plus, it's fun to keep secrets.

Or they're giving us enough to whet our appetite but not enough so other people can steal ideas. From what i understand the MA is unique, and however much you may not like the fact there is still 'competition' who will steal ideas.
NcSoft have to find the right balance between letting us know whats going on but not giving too much away to other who might use it for their games.
Imho NcSoft manage this pretty well.

It just sounds like the ability to make missions, sort of like Neverwinter Nights, but without the ability at add player created maps, so basically it adds absolutely nothing new unless you like wading through player stories, which, for the most part, will probably suck, with an end boss who, judging by character cossies lately, will look like an ageing prostitute.

As for what BAB said, I like that I16 is already getting a mention
As well as the fact that they seem to be working on a 5 year celebration event for spring - msut be going to be more than just the usual badge
And if they do want to release I15 froa return of the 5th on 05.05, then the spring event may be connected with it in some way

BAB doesn't have a cloak

If they've not finalized content for I14 yet, then they may not want to say what they're planning on adding to it until it's actually finished - like the MA and VEAT - one was pushed back, one was brought forward.

Sales of the wedding pack eneabled them to bring forward the VEAT, so it's possible that the sales of the upcoming magic pack will enable them to bring forward something from I15 into I14.

About the "Cloak and Dagger" stuff there are several other things that can happen.

Do you remember when I13 was announced and it said that the Mission Architect was going to be in there? And then it got pulled (for one reason or another?)

The outburst from the general community (both sides of the pond) was horrendous. Who needed the internet or phones, you could hear the americans easily

There are several ways of doing announcements for future releases.

1) Post up EVERYTHING that you have planned (even if some of the features would be cutting it fine in terms of being completed by the time of "issue completion").

The downside to this (as I am sure NCNC have discovered as a result of I13), is that if something turns out to be more of a problem then you expected, you will get flack in return for having announced it and then cutting it. And most of the time, all you can do is delay the release of the patch (especially if you want to stick to word of "we always release what we announce")

2) Announce what you KNOW will be in the package (and leave the minor stuff alone).

This can be a problem especially if you have several things on the run at the same time, and only a small percentage of them are actually on track to finishing in time. You will HAVE to put most of the work behind those features, and chances are you will have minimal extra's (typical expansion to be honest from most games companies). BUT in those cases, they typically DONT have a rule of "two expansions a year" in play, and just release things when they are ready and leave the customer waiting.

3) Have a list of "want to do's" for the year, and work your way through them, releasing them as and when they are all ready (chances are the expansion wont necessarily have a "theme" though, and will just be a mish mash of idea's)

Problem with this though is that in terms of development you dont have a time line for *when* the stuff gets announced, or at least, not much of a lead time. It will just get released as soon as its finished. You could end up waiting a LONG time for the stuff.

I personally am under the impression that a lot of the "under the hood" work that is being done will actually help CoX expand in the future, and it has to be done at some point (preferably sooner rather than later) and it *shouldn't* necessarily have to be announced.

If you look at Eve Online, when they "upgrade" their server tech/back end system, they have a huge announcement over it, telling players how it will affect them. For Eve Online this is particularly important because of how the game is designed where some systems can easily have 1000 players in the same place (Jita for example).

But CCP also dont say "it will be released in X expansion" either, not unless it is CONFIRMED to be released in that one (ie typically it has been ready for around a few weeks to a month just to check stability on the test server)

Now, reworking the underlying code (ie server infrastructure/graphics engine) is NOT a quick and easy job... it can easily take just as long as developing it from scratch (ie typically a couple of years), but i have faith in NCNC for getting something like that to be resolved

(note OpenGL3.0 is out, and just upgrading CoX up to that standard *could* be the edge that COX needs for improving their gfx engine.)

In terms of getting bugs fixed etc, depending on the number of developers who are available to fix that bug it could be a long hard slog to getting it resolved. Sure i would *love* to have just a bug fix patch, a total QoL "issue"... but i think that this would happen when they say "right, we have done everything for this issue and the next issue lets get cracking on this list"

But what about the developers who have no relevant skills to fixing bugs? You have to keep them busy as well, so they could well be working on "fluff" items that could be used at a later date. Chances are Jay could well be working on upgraded avatar models for most of the NPC's etc when he isnt working on clothing items (or at least completed the items on his current list). We just dont know... so that is something that they wont be announcing just yet, as releasing "bits and pieces" of a model is pretty lousy to be honest.

But then again, some of the developers are the only ones who can resolve a bug WHILST also be the only ones who can work on a required feature. Bug fixing can take a variable amount of time (ie it could well be a quick fix, it could take several weeks to fix... it all just depends on what is causing it and what needs to be done to fix it). Not to mention that cleaning up "redundant" code is also especially interesting, as that by itself can also introduce bugs that you thought wouldnt appear

I have seen this happen in Tabula Rasa ... all they did was clean up a piece of animation code. NPC's were unaffected by the change, but players actually got "hit with the nerf stick"... thing was, the code they removed *was* broken, it shouldnt have worked, but it did... and it had to be removed to actually allow another piece of "expansion code" to work.... sometimes they just cant win.

tl;dr version

So whilst the "cloak and dagger" act annoys players, it is more of a case of "we dont want you to get your hopes up". It has already stung NCNC once, and i am sure that they dont want to do it again...Not to mention that NCNC like the idea of theming Issues as well

Stuff that's not so much work for them over all?

Some new cossies. I wouldn't mind if it was along the lines of i13. We got a bunch of variations on existing outfits with new suits and shirts and ties. Plus the nifty, asymmetrical police belt. A couple of new patterns, or something like new beards, hairstyles or whatever. A couple new weapons (I'm thinking bows here) would be nice too.

Power proliferation for a couple of ATs. There's still a few obvious ones to do, I think. I'm not as clued up as a lot of people, but I don't think Ninjistu for Scrappers or whatever would be too much work.

QOL changes, and hopefully some fixing of bugs, which amount to the same thing in a very broad sense.

I'm not sure we'll get many new missions. There'll be plenty once the Architect goes live anyway.

and...umm...I doubt we'll see anything else.

i15, I'd expect a revamp of a zone similar to what was done with Hollows (maybe even more substantial than that) and arcs and whatever. Dual Pistols please?

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

Looks like its confirmed that i14 is purely MA with a few QOL changes thrown in if you ask me.

[/ QUOTE ]

You're reading WAY too much into what BaB said if you infer all the other stuff is just going to be QoL changes. Sure, it's going to be light on a LOT of other stuff, but there will be other stuff beyond just QoL changes and bug fixes.

As BaB said, people are going to say "WTH!?", that's to be expected because they don't bother to consider the massive amount of work that's gone in to the MA. People not interested in that are going to complain, which isn't too surprising in this modern culture of instant gratification. Well, you know what? There have been issues released that have held zero for ME, yet I've not complained about it.

Free issues are just that, free. You don't get to complain about stuff that's free.

yeh u do get some stuff that wasnt warranted tho, i13 for example, i was hopin on their i14 list it was going to say, we are going to revamp our failed attempt of balanced pvp aka we put i12 pvp back. and i was reading earlier somethin on the lines of palladin has left bla bla bla somethin to do with EU not making enough money, think it was yourself FFM, well well well there's alot more pvp'ers then if thats your point and also i know some pve'ers who thought it sucked [censored] too and left, oh the joy

Re: Cloak and Dagger, keeping the players informed of what's coming, yada yada yada.

My take on it is this: What's in development and what's coming up is more or less irrelevant. The meat and tatties of the game won't change no matter what you bolt on to it, and frankly, if you're bored of that, whatever shinies come out later aren't really going to change your opinion of it in the long term.

I like and enjoy the game as it is now (though I don't deny there are bits of it that royally get on my pecs), regardless of what the devs have in store for us. Anything they add to it later is just icing on an already fruity and sumptuous cake.
