My very first toon is Emp/Psi and I still get invites whenever DW her very self shows up. When you're dealing with the vast amounts of damage that can be inflicted on the ITF and STF, Emps can still make a big difference to a team.
That said, no one class of Def has a monopoly on all the good stuff...
...simply because we're all awesome. Every single Def rocks hard and heavy. Even the pointy stick mob. (clicky for explanation)

Must admit I found a big difference from when I first played my emp/rad defender to playing her now (well - 6 months ago). In the 'good ole days' emps were hard to come by for teams and like they appear to be US side wrapped in cotton wool to be kept safe - now they have been superceded by Kinetics it seems Hence the reason my poor healer is languishing under several inches of dust on a srver somewhere

I think that's just natural progression - if an AT is seen to be sought after, then more people will create one thinking it's a passport to permanent teaming 24/7, which then sort of floods the market, making the AT much less rarer.

Said empath was also my first level 50. I play her as a pacifist (a whole two attack powers, in case of emergencies) and haven't ever felt useless.

There's a difference between solo'ing and solo'ing as fast as a Blater or Scrapper.
If you're unable to solo I suggest you take a look at your build.

Well you can slot yourself to be good at your primary task or semi good at your secondary task doing a bit of damage. I prefer to make my toon good at the primary job. But with dual builds in the future this could change.
But even then soloing badly is not my idea of fun.

ATs and powers are different in this game and is for the most part geared towards teaming. Imagine that.

The way iv always seem teams geared is that low/mid lvls ppl want emps to keep their unenhanced toons alive, high lvl people tend to want more situational buff toons like +def/+recharge/+att since theres a higher chance that the player wouldv enhanced their buff powers to a point in that it will make a difference, after all who needs a heal if you aint getting hit/killing things uber quick.

Umm.. some empaths (also read in word defender here) can't fight their way out of a wet papertissue. True. (Thats what team members are for)
Some can!
It will just take a bit longer then any other AT.

That's why many of us have heals - it's to stop the rest of the team catching colds and so leading to fewer soggy tissues for us to get caught in.
I think force fielders just place an impenetrable shield around the cold-ridden nose. Not sure what pointy stick defenders do, though I wouldn't annoy them with soggy tissues lest they subject me to the healing arrow.

I love a good empath, I've got one at L36 so far, but playing in a good team can be very boring. I literally have 1 attack and when no one is losing health, what is there to do other than throw the odd RA or fort out? Should I have picked up more attacks?- Well I took the pure 'Buffbot' route- I have every single empathy power, the very first attack from the secondry pool, and a variety of team powers like leadership, TP friend, etc.
To me, it seems like kinetics is taking over. Empaths are awesome, but just don't seem to be recieving much love these days
DW's build is a bit more stripped-back than your average BuffyBot, and allows for pretty effective soloing:
- All Emp powers except Absorb Pain (never liked it, and it might sometimes be better to let one team member go and keep healing the rest than put their heal source at risk)
- Stamina set
- Recall Friend
- Hasten
- Air Superiority (solid Moderate damage plus knockdown) and Fly
That leaves enough room before 38 for a sleep, a stun, a knockback and a snipe, as well as your base L1 attack.
If I was doing it all again, I'd probably choose Cold, Dark, Rad or Power instead of Psi, drop Recall and Regen Aura and have more attacks.
Post-40, Power Mastery is your friend and delicious and moist (Power Build Up to buff your buffs, Temp Invuln for a little DamRes, Total Focus for a little SMASH! every now and again, and Conserve Power to make sure you never run dry between RAs).
Personally, I'd leave group buffs like Assault / Maneuvers off the menu and have extra attacks - particularly any mezzes you can stack (Bone Smasher / Stun on Power, stackable holds on Cold) or imposes an AoE enemy debuff (debuffing your enemy is buffing the team, remember).
Final bit of advice: Invention sets are your friend, particularly anything that gives a Recharge buff.

I hardly have any IO sets, its my low priority character thus get less funding from my total income.
Had a great run on the US last night, even on a bad PuG its a great challenge keeping everyone alive.
So at the end, i stay with 'empaths are useless on the EU due low population, odds on the US are higher that a empath still come in use'.

My Empath couldn't solo to save her life, but back then I didn't need to.
I wouldn't play one now; not in the EU anyway.

Yep harsh truth is that finding a team is not easy these days. So why bother making a toon who needs a team to shine? Nowadays I play only toons that can manage well soloing but dont mind teaming. That way I can still enjoy this game even if it is designed for teaming. Which brings us back to various threads about server merges etc.
I've been getting teams whenever I log on recently, Union Villain, high 30s. Even last night when WAR was laggy I jumped on to solo for a bit but stuck the LFT flag on. 5 mins later got a tell and joined a great little team. 5 of us altogether, tearing through +3s and no deaths (well I died but that was my own fault for letting the zombies off their leash).
So I've found it very easy to get teams on Union recently. But I have basically given up on Defiant.
Sometimes you get lucky. Other times you wont get a team no matter how hard you try. Even on Primetime. Thats why I use toons that are fun to play even when I am alone. On Def that means EVERY toon on Union I take more chances.

I think NCEU should give every account another free Change of Server token so if people want to relocate Support toons to the busier server they can do it without being expected to pay for it.
*Edit : WARs system of "These are the teams currently open and looking for members" is really overdue here too, it'd be a life saver. BaBs talked about it before, hopefully the Devs have seen how well it works in WAR and are on the case.

With who? Last time check was 17 online in 30-40 range, 16 greyed out (no reply, a 'sorry full' or a 'sorry TF'). Playing in the night is a nightmare on EU.
