Well no wonder the US seems so shiney to you so, you're comparing the time most EU people are asleep in bed with prime-time on the US servers. Using that example yes, you are far better off on the US servers, most EU people are gone to bed by then, especially during the week.
But its wrong to then assume that the EU servers are dead, just because you don't see many people playing in what is a non-peak time over here.
That's also the same reason I stopped playing in the US. 8pm over here (my play time, along with the majority of the EU) = Back From School time over there, hence the Car Crash teams I was getting constantly over there.

Try keeping everyone alive along a MoSTF, then you'll see how everybody, after earning that badge, appreciate your effort.
I know there are some empaths that use Healing Aura in Auto and then go afk, they give bad name to the ones like myself that do our best on keeping our teams safe.
It's true, however, that Kinetics are far more popular and handy atm, watching all the buffs they give to their teammates, besides Transfusion makes -regen to foes, but my point is... if it was useless, why making Pain Domination? because even the ones playing villainside only claimed they wanted to be equal to heroes, and they considered empath as an important powerset. Not only for heals, there are so few powersets that can protect from mez, and Empathy can.

Anyway, yeah. You're having problems finding a team at that time because, at that time, most people aren't playing.
we're pulling a quote wrongly here, my first line was 'last time i checked', finishing with the 'at night' part 
I'm perhaps used to other games, even on TR at midnight (u know, 2amish) the chat is still going, so even doing stuff solo makes it still enjoyable (devs did a great job on TR, honest). That is, without joining channels, or setting macro's to talk in a certain channel, just plain global chat.

normally, if I'm playing during the week midnight ( 00:00 ) is my finishing time. 2am would be a rarity - well, it would be now since I have discovered responsibility and have a nagging voice in my head (otherwise known as "wife").
but yes, finding teams can be quite difficult at almost any time. usually I try to start a team, one or two members. if I meet another team of one or two, I offer a merge. Generally this works quite well.
One thing though, I have always found that - since my last complaining whine of a post about the lack of teams - a broadcast does not work as well as a tell to those on the player list. If they say they are on a team, ask if there is room for one more. If they dont reply, remember who it was so you dont go spamming them.
My current tactic: log on with empath, look for team for 10 to 15 minutes. if that doesnt work, go and log in with a solo-able alt (currently a tanker or a scrapper) or log in with level 50 and look for fun 
Yeah, for me 2am = the middle of the night, not at night (I have to get up at 6am). Certainly if that was the time I played I would go for the US servers.

This is my bugbear about CoX. I played a game called The Realm many moons ago and they had 5 Global channels that were automatically available to everyone, there was a channel for New Players to ask questions/chat/find out a bit more about the game/meet people, there was a General Chat for just that, a Looking for Groups chat, Channel 5 was the terrifying Sales channel where all the l33t speakers lived, and an Events channel.
The idea was that the channels were primarily aimed at their specific reasons, but you could go off topic so long as any on topic messages/requests weren't lost. This helped to foster the Community Feel right the way across the game and was fantastic. The GMs monitored the Chat sometimes, but usually it was watched over by a number of player-moderators who had the facility to mute someone for up to an hour, which gave them the chance to forward any abuse of the EULA to the GM that was on duty. They were also able to call on the services of a GM quickly, so if you had a problem the channel Moderator would be able to call the available GM.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think we need player-mods in CoX but I do think maybe we could look at the "chat-snobs" that we have in CoX a little, why can't Arena be used for some friendly chatting if it's not being used to arrange Arena matches? Would the help channel be used a bit more if people saw it coming up on their screen? I keep having to double check that I have it loaded into my tabs it's so rare that I see it being used.
I know it may be a bit flame-baity, and I'm sorry if it appears that way, but I just think that channels being used more would equal them also being used more for what they're intended.

defintely having a LFG channel more easily acessible would be nice. (i'm still getitng used to the global channel tbh!)
However, the LFG channel would be much better if , when you logged in you also had access to the past 10 minutes of text in the channel.
or....
the city terminals (or whatever similar in CoV) had a facility to show groups advertising for members, TFs being organised, players looking for groups etc. like an online noticeboard. Not that I have suggested this before.....

It should simply be the way WAR does it. A button you click which shows all the open teams looking for members and gives their composition, what they're doing and how far away from you they are, along with any notes.
Making it attached to anything you have to run to to view decreases the usefulness IMO.
Havng played both on the american and on the european servers, and having had pure empaths on both, I can certainly say that empaths are much harder to play on eunropean servers.
Not only is this because of the fewer amount of players, but also due to the fact that people seem to forget about empaths these days.

I think the biggest difference between CoX and the rest of the MMO games, CoX has no 'static' zones where certain missions are done.
May it be GW, TR, Cabal, WAR, even AoC or WoW, they kinda split up the quests in solo(able) and team-required instances. Whereby CoX every mission (maybe it be on heroic) can be done solo and is totaly random in Paragon city. TF's are an exclusion, but they often take several hours (non min/max'ed) and mostly limited to lvl. Even at night on GW with low population on the EU, its still very easy to get a team, just go to the place u want to do a quest and see if there are any people -> good to go, fill it up with hench/heroes and even with 2-3 people you got a full 'team' to go. Even Tabula have done a decent job getting this to work (personal and team based portals, 1 and 2 way)
Its not uncommon if i join a team, the mission is 5 maps away, middle of freaking nowhere, and by the time i reach it they are basicly done with the mission and the next mission is 5 maps ahead again (story/contact missions).
Its not that CoX is bad on it, the other games just seem to implement it just a bit better or easier nowadays. Their location/lvl is more consistant. Maybe the new mission creator can bring some extra in this, perhaps a gathering zone where missions can be picked and as a team you move to the mission entry nearby.
Like the old days, you saw alot of people hanging around the PI building, looking for any portal-based mission (mostly with AV, but thats ok). Everyone can have a basicly infinitive ammount of missions, but they are still all the same (clear, defeat, find, click), you cant just shout 'blaster lf Zone-X' to specify a certain mission or map (TF's excluded), even newspaper missions are not 'shared' quests.

Maybe switch youre support toon from Defiant to Union... Eventually that will become the busier one of the two eu servers.

Only if there is alot of Empaths currently online, your friends are not about and your coalition/extended network not needing one. Same can apply for any AT combo really but as a fellow Empath player it did seem to swing to the extremes the chance of getting a team.
If thats the case your only option is to form teams, show strangers that you can play the set well, that you know what Clear Mind is and can keep it applied at all times (same as Fort) and (for me anyway) *gasp* contribute something with your secondary.
Low population numbers and the perceived need for Fire/Kin's on second accounts doesn't help mind you
I love Empaths more for the buffs than the heals when I am playing a damage dealing character, or the CMs as a non-Blaster squishie. There's always something nice about hearing the trademark Fortitude 'WoOOom' and realising that the Empath has decided you are clearly the team dps monster (especially in a team with more than one) and the best hope for punching everything in the face.
The only thing that makes me leery about them is when someone in a PuG says, "We need a healer," when they actually mean, "We need to use more advanced tactics than Spartarring into multiple mobs."

Oh shhh, that is how i play my Fire/Empath Controller.
Then again he does have a *slight* complex about thinking that he is a tanker.
I got my empath troller to 50 a while ago and he always had a good time in teams on union. I never got abuse because I never slacked off when I played him, even when i got a team with some really snotty nosed annoying kids, they were still appreciative of my work.
contrary to some beliefs, empathy can be a REALLY fun AT to play, especially in a big team on a high rep. You're almost always busy, unless of course there's an amazing buff on team. Which is why I went with troller rather than defender. Though my primary goal was empathy, I didn't feel as useless when the team didn't necessarily need an empath.
