Things that make people leave PVP (social side)
*Not read the original post at all*
Leaving PvP because of social things? People like that are pathetic for actually letting other people get to them.
1. They win for getting you to leave.
2. You are letting people over the internet effect your enjoyment, this is sad and you shouldn't let it happen.

the reason why the PVP zones are so full of idiots is because its a representation of the human race and unfortunately miscreants exist in far too big numbers. Also people feel big and hard when they can hide in cyberspace.
The amount of abuse I got from people on my stalker was a joke and I lost the joy of pvp for a while but you really cannot underestimate the usefulness of the /ignore command. Just putting one moron on it changed the tone of the zone greatly and left me free from distractions to lay the smack down on the person concerned

I have never ignored someone ever. It's totally the easy way out. Instead, when someone bad mouths you for killing them laugh at them, or if someone bad mouths you after killing you - kill them back and spam sit emotes on them while yelling "Teabagged $target" over broadcast easy done.

Some people (well one at least on defiant ) thrive on attention (bad as due to severe lack of skills they cant get any good) in order to justify their existance and the /ignore is actually the worst thing you can do to them Some people are beneith notice regardless of what crap comes out of their mouths

One problem that i've noticed recurring (and just happened about 10 minutes ago yet again), is that when an individual decides to try act like top dog and starts smirking at everyone, swearing where he feels like it, and has a group of friends who although arent actually breaking any rules, are all lined up ready to mock you if you even respond to what the offender says.

At that certain point someone new to PvP might enters the zone and what example does that set? Personally I've never used the ignore feature. Now I've never been victum of continuous spam either. I might get a few tells saying something stupid, but either they just get ignored or I respond back in a non hostile way and either the comments stop or a few idiotic ones follow after which I just dont bother reading them and the person usually stops, when you don't feed them. Like I mentioned, never had someone continually spam me with rubbish but was it to happen then I would use the ignore/petition feature.
I think its a shame if someone leaves due to another person(s) behaviour. It happens in mmo's and even more so in PvP due to the competitive nature.

Congrats on insulting those who left PVP for periods of time out of frustration with similar people. I'd shake your hand but then i'd be too tempted to strangle you whilst screaming "NERF HOBO!"

[/ QUOTE ]
1. As opposed to staying -just- to prove that they cant make you leave? I do that because im a stubborn moron, and trust me, it gets boring fast, and rarely amounts to more than a pointless demonstration, given that I often leave the zone after they do, to chill and get rid of the bad mood. Some people enjoy believing that they have control over others, because they know what to do to produce certain results. People like me stick around just to essentially give them the middle finger, but im sure because I actually leave afterwards you'd still see that as pathetic, right?
2. "Letting" it happen? Moods, or more specifically emotions arent wired up to light switches you can flick on and off, y'know. You can channel and direct them more creatively, but nobody has absolute control over them, and many have exceptionally little. Its always easier to have a harsh opinion upon those who arent as resilient as yourself. Just because something doesnt bother you, doesnt mean if it bothers someone else it means they're weak/pathetic/etc. Such judgements are easy to make, because you're already at "safe distance" to the group you just blasted. Is that actually your opinion or just an unconcerned, passing comment?
So I guess im trying to say :
Like, whatever man, thats just your... like... opinion

I took a little bit tapping up the post as normal, and 10 minutes at the start was a bit later when I finished. It wasnt so much a repeat of what I described, but a show of similar attitudes that reminded me of said things.

If I recall correctly, you got an earful of harsh words from me too, way back when. That was due to the kind of thing I described in the main post, and as I finally snapped and decided to throw something back at that guy and his little 'crew', you said something in my direction that got taken completely the wrong way, so I ended up assuming you were one of the griefmongerers..
So yeah, cheers for being patient back then
i dont bother with pvp much anymore, mainly working my WS as much as poss + just cba with [censored]'s anymore :P
that and my ignore list keeps growing and i fear reaching the max (if there is one) too fast

[/ QUOTE ]
Unconcerned passing comments is what I'm all about. I take someone calling me a 'damn scared noob who can't stand and fight' or some other PvP zone insult the same way I'd take 'I like to eat burgers with three layers', or some other random statement that comes out of someone elses mouth (or keyboard).

It won't bother all people, but it will bother some. You may just see it as an amusing bunch of words on a screen, others are more affected by what they read.
In the same way someone insulting someone face to face, some people will be bothered by it, others will just think it's harmless words and not care.
A large part of the MMO community, do care what is said to them in game, and this provokes an emotional response.
There's a reason why textual abuse, swearing etc. is in the EULA - and anyone violating this should be petitioned, though sad to say I've yet to see any repercussions for those breaking it.

A large part of the MMO community should lighten up a bit then.
Why would you get too offended by people who don't know you at all? The "game" you is not the "real" you. The reason why people say stupid things in the internet is Anonymity. Same Anonymity should protect you too from assaults to your person.
Why people complain about bad behaviour never ceases to amaze me. We are human. We are petty, self centered, selfish little *******'s. Give us Anonymity and the bubble breaks. Little Freudian Id comes crawling out and starts living up to all those dark desires and that will always be the case.
Complaining about these things is pointless because you are only stating the facts. Want a change? Start from yourself and do not expect everyone else to follow.
And if the "game" you is the "real" you, you should really consider taking a break from the game and get some real life. Go to pub. Have some drinks. Pick a partner. Have some...

I could care less what people say to/about me (I have alts in Freaks/LoUD so that much is obvious) but I have to say even if I did care I can't remember an occasion where something like this happened ... and I've occasionally PvPed on Union, a little bit on defiant (only one alt high enough) and over in the US...
so is it ...
a timing thing (I work so play outside those 9-5 hours where the population has a lower average age)?
a defiant thing?
a 'professional victim' thing? i.e., nobody responds on the times I play so nobody bothers?
or they know all my alts and leave the zone in fear? (my money is on this, but I am a little delusional about my PvP 'ability' (for want of a better term))
Synaesthetix:if your mum wasn't already dead I would go kill her for bringing
you into the world
I never played CoH EU, but i did do a fair amount of time on CoH US and i thing really gives u a thought...
Its not PvP that brings out the worst in ppl, its the fact (as previously said here) that its a meeting grounds for all sort of ppl, and a big part of human society are jerks Even before PvP existed in CoH, u could see ppl herding monsters and leading them into the centre of a Hamidon-Raid, Ritki monkeys jumping all over portal corp. yard. lvl 1 WS's throwing profanity at lvl 50 fire tanks, coz they wouldnt PL them, all kinds of insults towards eachother. as arena went live, the inults changed form, and everything was replied with: 'i pwn u n00b-censor in the arena you XXXXXXXXXXXX and more' since CoV, stalkers has made alot of enemies, not only for bad behavior, but even for rightous, correct and appropriate kills, simply coz ppl cant stand loosing/dying when not asked if this is ok. i try not to interfier with 'duels' in PvP-zones, but i dont get upset if some1 doesnt.. if u want a fair duel, arena is the place, where u can choose ur opponent without NPCs and other plaeyr interupting.
Its not always the attackrs and winners of the PvP that griefs and act like morons, also the victims do many times. i doubt there is anyway we can stop this, 1 way to actually lower the problem would be (in my oppinion) to not admit any1 below the age of 21, but that would still not be 100% safe since u dont have to be 11 to act as if u where. (tho by my spelling u would think i am lol)
seriously, its a shame PvP zones are avoided by many serious players, and we rescently in Union Leaders to start a program to lessen this effect. for what i can say at this point is:
If u like, or want to test, PvP, do not go to the PvP-zones, but get a friend/SG-mate and do it in the arena, where situations are controlled. once u get the hang of it/or tired u can take the next step into the PvP zones where things are alot less controlled and wild..
regarding ignore.. who listens to lies from a griefer? i dont.. if some1 finds it funny to TP some1 into a drone, his oppinion isnt worth much to me, no matter what he has to say.
PvP zones are great for practising, the equivalent of X-mens danger room. Spend a few hours in there and you'll learn a lot about what ur toon can and cant do. I never have time to read the broadcasts in the zone and if i do i certainly dont have time to reply as it usually results in my death just ignore and get on with fighting

Yeah, and these attempted insults are all so shallow too - just generic questioning of their opponents sexual orientation and ability to play the game.
Anonymity works both ways - they use it to act the way they do, but it also means that they have no personal knowledge of the person they're trying to insult, so they're very, very limited in what they can say.
And, as PvP is pretty fast moving, after a couple of minutes you'll see the exact same things that were being said to you being said to the next player who has dared to take them down.
And on a side note, even though I've taken down quite a few Villians, I've never had anyone say anything to me - and I've no idea why

I don't really mind being insulted, I mean, if someone takes a personal dislike to me in a PvP zone I just kill them more.
If it is getting to you for whatever reason, that's when /ignore and/or leaving the zone come in to play.
I would like to say that friendly banter/smack talk is a fun addition to PvP.

One problem that i've noticed recurring (and just happened about 10 minutes ago yet again), is that when an individual decides to try act like top dog and starts smirking at everyone, swearing where he feels like it, and has a group of friends who although arent actually breaking any rules, are all lined up ready to mock you if you even respond to what the offender says... its... well i've seen lots of people involved and in these kinds of broadcast insults, SUPPORTING the person trying to pick a fight. Not in an obvious and direct manner, but like they can smell the potential griefing target and jumping up on the bandwagon, perhaps to keep themselves out of the line of fire?
When someone randomly picks a target over broadcast and starts to harass them well out of line of just playful banter, you'll find that a lot of the 'cool kid' wannabes instantly try to jump on the bandwagon, doing the "offensive is cool, you just dont get it" deal, and add little sarcastic, holier-than-thou remarks (in volleys) whenever you say or do anything. Especially if you try to talk to them, or ask them to chill/tell them you'll petition if they dont give it a rest.
Im sure I can anticipate the obvious response to this :
"Just put them on ignore"
How long is the ignore list exactly? If I put everyone like this on ignore that I had met in my CoX time, the list would have already been filled up. Also there is a trend amongst those who you -do- ignore, to broadcast lies about you because you cant see them doing it, telling people not to trust you (if you're a dueller) because you cheat, or make up stories about you griefing them or harassing -them- over tells. Whilst this little event 10 minutes ago never got to that level, and the only 'supporting cast' of the main moron was actually only trying to be playful (he was just trying to lighten the mood, but failing, I believe), i've still seen this kind of behaviour all too often. Thats the kind of stuff that really makes PVP a place you regret going to sometimes.
This might be a bit far-fetched sounding, but bear with me. Ever since people started employing rules to force obnoxious, profane, offensive people to take responsibility for their actions/words, people decided to learn and evolve new ways of being offensive without actually breaking any hard-written rules. Constant indirect, sarcastic comments, on every line that doesnt even relate to them. Deliberately looking for ways to misinterpret everything you say, just so they can further an act of playing the victim (or the 'righteous backlash' card). This is all further made worse by some who -really- like to annoy people and drive them out of the zone, who bring friends, who remain otherwise polite to others and quiet, until the 'main man' starts the griefing, after which, they all jump in, and claim to be innocently reacting to a "whinger". With enough provocation, they can get their target enraged, and people who didnt hear the startings of the griefage will just assume the victim is actually the aggressor.
That is the final cherry on top of this big dung-sundae.
The people who get sucked into it obliviously and actually -help- the griefers by focusing on their target, who they provoked. That is by far the worst part. Especially if you're just getting into PVP or if you're one of the 'unknown regulars' of the game/zone, because once people start to believe you're a jack[mule], they often cling to that first impression for a while.
...but the only person who can be held accountable, is the one who started it, and that is -only- if they accidentally allowed themselves to actually curse. All others (and themselves, if they kept in control enough) are technically completely safe, because they didnt actually break any of the hard rules... and given how messy those kinds of insidious little griefing sessions can be, im sure it leaves any GM looking into the issue in a hard place to respond.
Where am I going with this? Hell knows. I guess im just venting because I have seen this happen to others a few times, and have been on the recieving end of it too. It just feels absurd that things like this are allowed to happen, and I cant think of anything that would help prevent them from going on too.
The reason why PVP zones are often so full of idiots, is because half of the time, people who arent on the recieving end seem to be egging them on, encouraging them, and at worst supporting them directly. People say PVP will always be like this, but I have to ask why that is? Is it because of a lack of constant moderation that is too costly to implement? Is it because PVP attracts those kinds or brings out the worst in otherwise normal people? Or is because those kinds of people seem to regularly visit PVP and support those kinds of underhanded tactics, effectively giving a show of hands to others that "Dont worry folks, its a PVP zone, you can act like a jerk if you want to!".
Blargh. So, no point I guess. One-shot thread. Watch it gurgle as the forums slowly flush it away in the wash of new threads. xD
