We used to have that, but the large number of 1 star bandits made it a useless system.

This is true, and makes one wonder what the developers were thinking of when they included a similar system in the AE.

Anyone know a lot about message boards? Why are we changing? I assume because you either have a lot more access or perhaps less upkeep. Can anyone post in some layman terms the differences between the board softwares?
Does this mean the star system is going away?
[/ QUOTE ]
I personally would like a system where someone can rate a person and not a thread. Sure, people might get Karma bombed, but it'd be very entertaining to watch.
[/ QUOTE ]
"Might"? They absolutely would. It always happens on forums with those sorts of user ratings. It did here when we had it. They're useless.

Why are we changing?
Because this forum software is 5 years old. It is also terribly overburdened for the amount of people we have using it (in terms of what it was designed to handle). There's a reason we had to have periodic purges, the database structure of the forums would break if not.
What are some differences?
Newer software allows better moderation tools No more mass deletions when one post needs to be pruned. No more periodic name changing to avoid/confuse your past posting history. We will be able to have a more elaborate forum structure (forums with subforums for special topic areas) without getting bogged down in one huge page with a ton of sections. All of this will happen with a much lower server load when it comes to building pages people request, or adding new material. Additionally, it will look a lot better, and have more user options when it comes to how things are displayed.
"Null is as much an argument "for removing the cottage rule" as the moon being round is for buying tennis shoes." -Memphis Bill
When you report a post to a moderator, you will be able to add a comment to let the moderator know what the problem is. No more need to send an extra PM or announce the problem in the thread and report yourself so that the mod will see what the problem is. Also, it allows multiple reporting of threads/posts so that when a mod gets into work in the morning, they'll head directly to the disastrous thread that got 403 reports first rather than slog through the 20 other reported threads with only one or two reports.
Besides better pruning, they can also.... MERGE threads. That's right, when we start getting 20 threads about when I16 is being released, they can all be merged into one giant SOON thread. People who think their post deserves special attention by being the first in a brand new thread so they get more attention will be forcibly put to the back of the line where they belong, the cutters!

Generally speaking, vBulletin is a LOT more customizable than what we've got now, and adding plugins and scripts is rather easy to do.
And personally speaking, I've got years of modding/admining forums run on vBulletin. So for me, it'll kinda be like coming home.

A WYSIWYG EDITOR FINALLY.
The new boards will:
- enforce minimum standards of spelling, grammar, and civility in discourse.
- the star system will be available but all star settings will be adjusted to reflect the actual value of a discussion.
- trolls will be identified before hitting send. Not only will their posts be filtered out but they will be painted bright blue as they sit at their keyboards.
- housing prices will adjust to reflect actual value, not artificial market fluctuations.
It's really GOOD software.

I only want one thing from the new boards. Everything else is fluff.
When I click on a thread topic... I want to be taken to the first post in that thread. Not tossed somewhere seemingly random and forced to scroll up to find the OP.
That's it. Too much to ask?
Oh and a pony.
[/ QUOTE ]
Um, you can do that here. You see those little page numbers that appear below a thread topic? Yeah, if you click the little 1, guess what happens? You get the first page of the thread.
Why software companies have to make software to do the most common sense things for people just boggles my mind. Use a little logic.
The only thing that really lacks on this board system is the Search function, as stated above.
[/ QUOTE ]
I have the same problem. Many threads have only one page, so there is no little number to click on. When I go to that thread for the very first time, I almost never arrive at the first post in the thread, and have to scroll up.

As others have said, it's not random. It's the first unread post since the last time you were active on the forum.
As to the latter post by someone else about having to get to the top of the page the hard way if it's somewhere at the bottom of page one that you're thrown... that's what the HOME key is for. It'll put you right back at the top of the page. (Just as END will throw you all the way down to the bottom with one key push.)
Whether it's random or not really isn't the point.

The way it's set up here is a thousand times better than one of those 'go to first post' boards. if there is a thread that you're following, and left off on the last post in that thread when you closed the window, and several more people post in it, guess what? You're left to dig tour way through the thread for where you left off instead of jumping straight to the new posts, that is so much more of a pain in the [censored] than having to press a little 1 or the home key to get to the first topic that you haven't started reading yet.
Edit: granted, the option to be used either way would be best, but if there aren't options like that, the jump to new post is prefered over the open to first post method.

There is a column that says 'Replies'. Under that heading it shows how many total posts are in the thread, as well as how many are unread.
When you click on a thread that has only one page, it will take you to the first unread post... You can tell if you'll be taken to the top or not by the 'Post Count (Unread Post Count)' numbers.
It's not that difficult.
Not to say that the current software sucks like a super-massive black hole.
I'm curious if they are going to continue the practice of not hosting avatars, and if they are going to leave signature images off.

Just for clarity, I was talking about threads I visit for the very first time. So the first unread post should be the very first post in the thread. But often, I don't arrive at the first "unread post" and have to scroll up to it.

Like some others said, this doesn't work for threads that only have one page. I also have the forums set to display 50 posts a page which rather exacerbates my little peeve. And yeah, I know that's on me.
Thanks for the snark though, much appreciated!
It's just a small thing that bothers me. An annoyance. Of course there are ways around it. There are ways around the construction that they started on my route to work. There are ways I could prevent a sleep deprived bacon from tripping over his shoes because he left them in the middle of the floor.
Most of the time on multiple page threads I do click the little number one. Sometimes in my excitement to peruse the always eloquent musings of my fellow forumites I forget, and just click the delicious shiny title. Because, and here comes my confession... I'm fallible. Yes, one of those rare people who sometimes make mistakes and then has that human audacity t... Arg, there I go with my words again. Never mind.
To further down thread:
Also, I said "seemingly random" not just "random." Nyah!
All i want is for there to still be an "Active Topics" button, i like that way more than the stupid "Todays Post's" one as i don't want to see whats new just today i want to see where the actual conversation's are.

Clicking the name of the post should do that IMO and, no, it doesn't take you to the "latest post since you read the thread last" as it frequently just chucks me any old where in threads I've never read before. On the other hand, I don't actually HAVE this complaint, I'm just interested in ascertaining it's validity. I know how to click the "1" to insure I go to the beginning of a new thread.
I'll consider the new forums a failure if they lack any feature we currently have. I don't know whether to count the loss of PMs we have saved as a lack of feature yet, but I'm wary!

[ QUOTE ]
Although sometimes if you haven't looked at a thread, it will still mark early posts as "read" and plop you somewhere down the page the first time you click on it.
[/ QUOTE ]
If it marks the thread as read before you read it and doesn't drop you at the top of the page when you click on the thread, then someone's added a post since you last refreshed the post list. I assure you, though, it's not random.
[/ QUOTE ]
That might as well be random to those of us experiencing it! It's a pretty huge issue in fast moving threads too.
Wait, how is it doing that NOT just as big an issue as it just randomly throwing us hither and thither, wtf?
I click a large thread I've never read before and it puts me suddenly on page 9 out of 14, because apparently 5 pages of threads have been written since I opened the forums in a new tab and this is business as usual, wai, bwah?
Again though, I don't consider this to be 'ZOMG BUG RUN FOR THE HILLS' but hand waving it away while we are in the process of discussing possible issues during a board migration is kinda crappy.
