    Plant/Fire/what?

Like the other dudes said, ice and fire rock. I go fire all the way. Going for defense on a dom doesn't do much for me, the only time I think it's worthwhile is if you plan on big game hunting. Otherwise your controls should be keeping you safe while you destroy. I don't think I could give up fireball for anything, it's what I felt was missing during my whole journey to 50. And yeah, RoTP is better than defense. Faceplanting is just a brief interruption punctuated by a fiery explosion.

For my main character, he is a person that has learned to control his Ki energy. (think Dragonball Z) -- He is a SS/Fire Aura.

Part of the thing I do with him is that he has transformations similar to what Super Saiyans go through. 30-44 he gains the SS blonde hair and such... 45-50 he has blue hair and blue auras, and in Incarnate trial fully level shifted he is a purple/red.

Basically in times he holds back his power because he loves a challenge in order not to decimate his opponent in one to two blows. I also illustrate this by the changing colors.

How does your character do it?
To me this is like trying to explain why everyone in Paragon never blinks or changes facial expressions, or why they all have mitten hands. Video games are fun pretendy time.

Well, not all CoX players--I have plenty of fellow CoX players on my Steam friends list. I have been using Steam for a couple of years now. It has made it so easy to keep track of my games and updates (and saved games across computers, go cloud!), and team up with friends, and yeah, I look forward to earning achievements. But it's possible for Steam to simply sync up with an MMO's already-extant achievements/badges (as other games have shown), but I don't expect that minor detail to change anyone's mind here.

A couple of friends have claimed that Steam wreaked various forms of havoc on their PCs, but I've used it across three systems now with no such problems, along with many other people I know (and both of those friends were in the habit of pirating games instead of paying for them when they complained the loudest about Steam--wonder if that had anything to do with it? )
I suspect that most people don't have a strong negative opinion about steam, but this is the forums man. Anything you post will draw out at least a strong handful of opposition.

If I could carry a tablet and pull up CoH whenever I was bored - that would be amazing. Even if it is wifi only, I'm in Seattle so every block has 2 starbucks with free wi-fi.

anyone playing CoH on anything besides a desktop/laptop already?
I've been playing around with an iPad2 and logmein. This isn't the same as running CoH natively, but functionally it's the same thing. Basically your PC screen is mirrored to your iPad, works over any data connection (faster is better). You have full control over your pc from the touch screen. I use a bluetooth keyboard to make things easier. CoH must be run in windowed mode, for some reason fullscreen just gives a black screen on the iPad.

The first issue with this is lack of a mouse, but that's a small problem compared to the control being all messed up. Trying to move your characters results in some weird behavior, as if you were lightly tapping a movement key over and over again instead of holding it down. It's not a purely graphical issue as autorun works fine, I suspect it's something to do with the way keypress data is passed around. If that can be overcome I think the iPad + logmein route is doable for light play.

    A challenge?

It would be possible, probably a few different ways. My first thought is some /thermals or /pains with heals on auto along with some FFs for force bubble and stacked dispersions.

I say it would be, because you know what would happen as soon as the players go afk?

    "Hey guys! It's MELEE TIME!!!!!!"
  9. The majority of attacks in the game have two components dealing with whether or not they're going to hit you: Typed and Positional.

The typed component deals with the damage type: Smashing, lethal, energy, et cetera.

The positional component deals with, well, position: Melee, Ranged, or AoE.

It might sound complicated but it's straightforward once you get the general idea. Take Gambler's Cut from Katana for instance. The attack is Lethal typed and Melee positional. Makes sense. If someone tries to hit you with Gambler's Cut your highest defense to one of those two components is taken in to account:

Say you have 15% defense to Melee and 20% defense to lethal. Your lethal defense is the one that is going into the to-hit calculations, your Melee defense doesn't matter(in this case). It's the highest of whatever components are trying to hit you.

This is why people generally pick either positional or typed defense when planning an IO build, it doesn't make much sense to slot for both. If an armor set is based in typed defense, like Energy Aura, you want to slot IOs that offer typed defense. Armors like Super Reflexes that offer positional, you want to slot for positional. You identify what armors and attacks apply to what kind of defense by reading the descriptions: Melee, Ranged, AoE for positional. Smashing, Lethal, Fire, Cold, Energy, Negative Energy, and Psy for typed.

For non-defense armors like Fire Armor people tend to go for typed defense, smashing/lethal in particular, because a lot of attacks in the game have a smashing/lethal component whether they're positionally melee, ranged, or aoe. Also, many elemental/exotic attacks (fire ball for instance is positionally AoE, typed Fire/Smash) have a smashing or lethal component: If you had zero fire defense, zero AoE defense, but a bunch of smashing defense you would be protected against a fire ball attack. Again, your highest level of defense to the component of the attack is taken into account.

I don't know if you use Mids, but I highly recommend it as being able to look at a bunch of powersets and play with builds with different armors and slotting can really help with this. You could throw your current build in there, then build another based around kinetic combats/typed defense and see what you come up with.

Edit: Also http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Category:Invention_Sets this page has a good breakdown of set bonuses. You can sort IO sets by bonus type, so if you wanted "Sets that improve "Whatever Quality"" you can look at all of them at once.
  10. I was on one of my newer scrappers the other night, pre SOs. Just killing stuff, y'know how it is. I get a tell asking for some help with a mission, usually I'm down for whatever so I agree. It's a single emp/nrg def, understandable that they want a hand. No one else is invited to the team, it's cool I'm down with a duo. Quick check of their powers doesn't raise any flags: fort and RAs are all there (not high enough for AB yet), along with vet badges up to the six or nine month mark, don't remember, I often play from my inversion table.

So the mission begins and it's fine, the emp plays pretty aggressively which is always nice to see. About four groups in I realize that while they are doing an admirable job healing, I don't have any buffs. I mention that fortitude is a really great buff. They agree that it is, then run to the next mob. Another group, still no buffs, no fort, no RAs. Lots of healing aura though.

I finally break down and ask politely for some fortitude(my scrapper is EA and pre SOs especially the +def comes in real handy), they say ok and I'm all like "Cool finally, maybe this guy just doesn't know how much easier this'll be..."

I glance up at my buff bar and I have... Clear Mind. I wait a few seconds and... He runs off and aggros two groups, we end up faceplanting.

I don't usually one star people, but...
  11. This is about where I am on live. Still have some purples to slot, but I've gotten lazy the past few weeks. The character is extremely fast paced and slightly suicidal, solos comfortably on +3/+8. I don't like the medicine pool here. Enemies are dropping insps so fast, with a few combine binds you're all set. Animation time on aid self is more dangerous than not using it. Too busy toasting people to heal anyone else when I team, rather let them eat dirt and finish off the mob, then drop a wakie. Slackers.

With perma dom you don't need consume. Again, it's more time spent doing something that's not locking down or murdering. With slotted stamina and domination filling end every 70 seconds it's just not necessary.

The picks you use as lotg mules are personal preference I suppose. I use the stealth pool since I can just take the powers out of my tray and forget about them.

    Also:
t4 musculature and barrier. Between barrier, purple insps, and demonic I have defense when I need it. Does this character die often? Yes. But I'm slightly suicidal like I said, and usually not more than once per rotp cycling.

Every time she found intelligent life, its people just regarded her as a monster and either hid from her, made war to chase her away or at best kept their distance. Earth was the first place where she didn't seem terribly out of place just because everything here is so incredibly weird, but even so, Star just doesn't feel right dealing with people. If she's left to her own devices, she'd just hide out in a cave by herself.
In that case, Sam, the issue isn't that she's mute. A sufficiently advanced creature, like she seems to be, should be fully capable of finding a way to communicate. Using text readouts is the obvious technological way as a previous poster suggested. However, from your response it's not a technical limitation you're working with but a psychological one. In that case I'd be curious about why she is seeking out and working with contacts at all. I don't know if a character that reclusive is even doable in this game without being part of a team where someone else is handling all interactions with the public.
