will CoH run on the new MS tablet?
Depends on which new MS tablet you mean. The One running Windows RT (ARM based) - no. The one with the Intel Core i5 in it (Surface Pro,) possibly, not sure of the specs. I wouldn't expect it to be stellar though. They don't give the amount of system memory (just storage,) initial units appear to be wifi only, and 10" screen... eh.
Hmmm, I am thinking it would be a pain to play on a tablet. Also would use a lot of room.

This. Give me a "retro" desktop computer to play CoH. I can be without CoH long enough to do whatever requires me to be away from my desktop.

Unfortunately it uses Windows 8... >.>

I thought it was an i3? I'm not sure this game will run on any Tablet based system honestly. Atleast not in anything beyond Safe Mode. If it gets that far then the monster processing power being used will likely drain that battery quick and make it extremely hot to hold.
|
So we're looking at:
10" screen (Does have a Mini Displayport out.)
Intel core i5 processor
Likely integrated graphics (probably Integrated 2500 - which, from experience, since I *just* put an Ivy Bridge together sans dedicated card, is not fun.)
64-128 Gb storage via SSD.
Unknowns: Actual system RAM. Given it's running Win8, I'd be surprised if it were under 2 Gb. They don't want the tablet to be "tap... wait.... wait... ok."
Or, as a direct copy from the Pro specs:
Windows 8 Pro
- OS: Windows 8 Pro
- Weight: 903 g
- Thickness: 13.5 mm
- Display: 10.6” ClearType Full HD Display
- Battery: 42 W-h
- Ports: microSDXC, USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort Video, 2×2 MIMO antennae
- Features: Touch Cover, Type Cover, Pen with Palm Block, VaporMg Case & Stand
- Possible configurations: 64 GB, 128 GB
Holding it won't be an issue. It's got a built in stand in the back, and the cover they're showing it with (two covers, actually, not counting color variations on the one) doubles as a keyboard with trackpad.
Run hot? Maybe. Power? Plug it in. >.>
I just foresee confusion and annoyance with consumers. "I thought this ran Windows, why can't I run XYZ program?" "Oh, that's the ARM based one, you need to pay more for the Intel based one."
Howz about a SteamPunk Desktop? That retro enough for ya?

(Yes, that's a real mechanical typewriter. Yes, it's got a kit to let you plug it into the PC. Yes, they have a kit for most mechanical keyboards. No, I don't see me ever actually using one.)
I don't claim to be an expert, but wouldn't using a typewriter barrage the screen with the metal ink-covered arms every time you tried to type something? I admit it's been a very long time since I used a typewriter (freaking school science project requiring everything in type at a time when my actual printer had just corked it)
I'd never use a nuke in a superhero universe. You nuke a city, you kill 1.5 million people minus one. The last guy not only gets superpowers from the explosion, but ones that let him survive a nuke...and wow, is he torqued off

PPD Mastermind
I have an ipad. It is just okay. I can play sudoku on it and watch netflix.
But really I want to play CoH. And my laptop is too big to carry around everywhere. If I could carry a tablet and pull up CoH whenever I was bored - that would be amazing. Even if it is wifi only, I'm in Seattle so every block has 2 starbucks with free wi-fi. anyone playing CoH on anything besides a desktop/laptop already? |
The first issue with this is lack of a mouse, but that's a small problem compared to the control being all messed up. Trying to move your characters results in some weird behavior, as if you were lightly tapping a movement key over and over again instead of holding it down. It's not a purely graphical issue as autorun works fine, I suspect it's something to do with the way keypress data is passed around. If that can be overcome I think the iPad + logmein route is doable for light play.

And yes, you can actually put a piece of paper there and get a "hard copy" of everything you type. They maintain that functionality.
.... no, if I had a tablet, I still wouldn't put it there, even knowing that.

I love these questions. Point blank answer:
It may run. The Pro specs are, excepting the actual memory, adequate enough to actually make it run... provided the graphics are turned down to 0 or maybe even -1 if that's possible.
You will require a mouse. You will require a keyboard. The game is likely highly unplayable without them.
There is therefore no actual *point* to doing this. The Surface, nor any Tablet, excepting the convertible laptop ones, are simply not a good idea for this type of game, without decent accessories and specs.
Let me put it to you this way. You would not use a Yugo to run in an F1 race. Oh, you MIGHT (provided they let you pass Tech and all that)... but it's really not meant for that, and you would not enjoy the experience, either actually doing it (being passed 150times would be very irritating, for example,) nor watching it (you are a moving speed bump, and a dangerous one)
These things are Yugos for Co*.
But I daresay it would likely run... maybe.
/I'm not buyin' one to find out though.
//Might buy one because it might be the first actually useful-to-me product I can use like this.
///Maybe.

Houtex - part of the sell of the M$ tablets is a keyboard/trackpad combo built into one of the at-release covers as an accessory.

As far as overall usability is concerned, it's a royal PITA. I've been using it since the developer preview, my current system dual-boots the release preview (since I'm going to have to know the thing,) and I despise it. I don't get passionate about software - it's either "I like it" or "I don't," but I downright hate Windows 8 on a PC. I'm sure it'll be fine on a tablet (and MS is planning on locking down what can be put on at least the RT version via the app store,) but on a PC it's one of the most irritating experiences I've had since... well, I don't know when. And with the "since I don't know when," I'm *including* DOS and having to type odd, arcane, case-sensitive and OddLy.caPit.AL_ized commands into Linux to try to convince a driver to install.

Yes, all of those are keyboard/trackpad/covers. (In fairly hideous colors.) They attach magnetically.
Seriously, how does anyone play on a laptop? Those keyboards are so small! I feel like I'm trying to cram my fingers into the area the size of a pill bottle to type. I don't even want to think about what it would be like trying to play on a tablet.
And let's not even go into freeze-framing lag when a Rikti Invasion or Zombie Invasion start. Sure, I could turn the graphics all the way down to 0, but that's kind of lame.
No, I'll stick with a system that's designed for gaming. A quad-core PC with 6GB RAM, and a screaming graphics card with its own physics processor and tons of memory. And a display I can actually see.
After all, you don't try to drive a nail with a screwdriver, do you?

Ok, all kidding aside, there are perfectly capable laptops out there that play CoX at decent settings, you just need to shop around and wait for the good deals (my laptop runs CoX at max settings at 1920x1080 resolution fine enough... and it was only £650 when i got it).
If you can play with that keyboard/mouse, hey, go nuts. Fair point, and conceeded, though. I can't imagine it feels good to type with... we'll see. I personally, though, simply can't play without a *real* mouse. Might as well use a Xbox controller than that mousepad, for me. Or just the arrow keys to turn and then move. *shudders*
The rest of it I stand by: It's a Yugo. A V8 Yugo, sure, with the i5, but the transmission won't hold up (video card), and it will be awful.
Can't wait to try it if I get the opportunity, just to see if it does work. Morbid curiosity, you could say.
