What's the limit?
Depends on the individual Psi.
Wasn't there a person who had his character of Statesboy generic'ed because he roleplayed as Statesman's sidekick?
Your example seems a fair bit worse than that. Have you considered reporting them? Otherwise you could choose not to associate with them. Or just ignore the parts of their roleplay that seem unreasonable; though that would likely lead to ignoring them completely so in the end it'd probably be best to just save time and skip straight to the messy ending.

...I just don't see how this merited his own thread. It's a petty gripe at best. C'mon, you're on a roleplay server. People wanna feel special and grand.
Problem is, most of em suck at doin' it without riding a signature character's coat-tails.
If Statesman and Manticore knew how many illegitimate children they had, they need Chris Jenkins on speed-dial to fight child support claims.

I am generally annoyed by anyone who claims to have any massive connection to one of the big NPCs out there. If you really want to be connected to a character, choose one of the lesser ones and not a Patron/FP member.
IE, one of my friends plans to make an Arachnos Soldier who is Marshal Brass's son, always trying to live up to his father's reputation. I see little problem with this, since Brass is not a major character, and he is in no way altered to fit the new character. It would be easy to assume Brass has a family, just never mentioned.
I've also written NPCs into my own character's storys. Such as my Dominator, Rose Prince. He went to college with the hero Rosethorn. No deep relationship, they were simply classmates. This eventually evolved into a rivalry when each gained their powers. I came up with this due to the similarity in theme and name, and the fact that she showed up in my Mayhem missions very frequently.
As far as patrons go, the furtherst I have gone is my Corruptor, Capt. Stormrider, who is being trained by Scirocco to further hone his electrical powers. But this is something anyone who has chosen him as a Patron could say, and would equally make sense. It's simply an RP way of explaining Mu Mastery.
The off-beat space pirate...Capt. Stormrider (50+3 Elec/Storm Science Corruptor)
The mysterious Djinn...Emerald Dervish (50+1 DB/DA Magic Stalker)
The psychotic inventor...Dollmaster (50 Bot/FF Tech Mastermind)
Virtue Forever.

Depending on just how far they are rp'ing the scenario you could just treat it as some outrageous claim they are making and rp the appropriate level of skepticism... If they are RP'ing it such that the "named character" is actually in the room agreeing about the relationship then it gets a bit tougher.
[/ QUOTE ]
Pretty much this. Anything a character says in RP is just that, something they say. I could walk around in real life telling everybody I know that I'm the illegitimate offspring of Stalin and Neil Armstrong, but I doubt any of them would really believe me.
Of course, the fact that it's usually hard to do that without upsetting the other player means that it's rarely an option unless you don't care what the person in question thinks. Which is kind of sad, since I've always wanted to play a really compulsive liar whose fibs are on a Baron Munchausen level. About the only thing keeping me from doing so is the knowledge that I'd quickly get run out of town by people who would take everything she said seriously.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Psi, I don't roleplay anymore (Haven't for a long time) but please don't take this the wrong way bud, you are way too sensitive about these kinds of things.
To me, this is an issue of RPing someone else's characters without their consent.
That's what this is to me. It's not about sex, or gay, or anything like that.
It's about me taking your character, saying I have a child with him, and that your character has a drinking problem and likes to go bang midgets behind the 7-11.

I roleplay that my villain works with Dr. Aeon on various research projects, basically by forcing him to help through threats of physical violence (and slightly because Aeon's characterisation is such that it seems he would like to work on all sorts of different projects.)
I justify this because she has defeated him as a Boss, EB, and AV in a large number of (dev content) missions thus far, so she should have the martial might to be reasonably assured of defeating him again.
Would this bother you, Psi?
That sounds fine to me because you have a reason.
You've defeated him. You have that in-game/IC 'badge.'
But if you were going as deep as what I was talking about, I'd want him to come out and say "Yes, I'm having relations with that woman" or whatever.

I discourage people in my VG from RPing godmodey connections to name high level NPCs, for a lot of the reasons you mention.
Saying you're an ex-Hellion, I have no problem with that. Saying you have a rivalry with Von Grun, I can live with that. Saying you have tea with Nemesis? Yeeeaaah... not going to take you "seriously" there.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, I see what you're doing there.
I've gone back and forth on the topic myself. Personally, I would actually like to ignore the game's canon characters where I can, and just RP with real people. But when they are brought up in RP is where the conflict occurs. Do you, as a player, pretend that you're beneath the big n bad AV characters? I say no, by the time I'm level 50, I consider myself on Equal footing RP wise to the game's canon characters. Now I will not RP that canon toons are absolutely inferior story wise to my character (unless I were to feel really vindictive), but I will "capture" one of them for a mission due to some plot thing or another. To me it's about balance.
Yes Aggie, Tea with Nemesis is a bit over the top, but we're soo similar as characters I thought a while ago that they might have had some kind of past relationship, something that I no longer believe is necessary.
Tyrantula is right, you're waaaay too sensitive about this stuff.
If your own enjoyment comes from EVERYONE ELSE, and everyone else around you MUST meet your expectations 100%, then you're doing something wrong.
Besides, with all your talk about how it's wrong to RP other characters to the extremes, and you're right, you are indirectly doing the exact same thing you're saying is bad by telling everyone "you're doing it wrong! Stop!"

Really. Sorry you feel I'm so sensitive, but it upsets me to no end that people are RPing other people's characters. Call me sensitive, call me stupid, call me childish. Whatever.
But to me, that's taboo.
So. Having said that.
I'll take all your comments in hand and leave the thread alone now.
Thanks guys.

I'll have a go from the other end. If I were ever lucky enough to get any of my PCs published (say in a PnP game making them NPCs), do I have any right to expect to be able to police how they will be used by the public at large? Aside from copyright law banning my characters from being used to make anyone else profit without my consent, those published characters are freely available to be used and abused by whoever buys them.
Don't you think the same sort of applies to the signature characters in MMOs? Yes, they are the dev's PCs, but they are also part of the IP and NPCs that we all interact with as part of the story everyday. If the devs wanted to keep them and their stories private, they should have held them back to stay personal property rather than public property and part of the game.
I don't see any signs of being "too sensitive" in this thread.
My personal tastes seem to be similar to your own, Psi (Regarding playing canon and other people's characters).
And the same with what Count Logan said about not being inferior to the canon character as well.
Now, these are our personal opinions.
We can express them OOCly and ICly how we choose and we can react accordingly.
Personally, sometimes I think the whole notion of, "Different people's fun" still needs to allow for societal/community-based ramifications.
That's what can stop a pesky packmate from soiling the water hole.
Just leting people know, "hey, I understand you're just trying to have fun... But think about everyone else as well".
That's just it.
So, we can all play in our own individual bubbles of immersion... where I'm Statesman's lover and you're Statesman's lover and she's Statesman's lover and wouldn't you like to be a Statesman's lover too?
However, isn't that spoiling some of the point about collective and collaborated role-play among many?
Just my opinions, but that's all I have to offer at the moment.
...Well... and this other entity's opinions, but this other entity is shy and doesn't like me speaking for it on public forums... And it can cause quasars to sprout bananas and brew pink coffee that tastes like ants... But yeah, it's not really important to discuss now...

If it bothers you, just start up your own subplot/rumours about a randy shapechanger who pretends to be Captain Mako in order to sleep with gullible young villains.
Drop a comment that your character knows someone else who got tricked this way, thats all.
Don't feel obliged to burst their bubble.
Responding like this in character kind of keeps the peace and preserves continuity on both sides. In their mind, their character is special enough to sleep with Mako. In your mind, they're being fooled by a sleazy morphing wannabe.

It becomes unsimplified, Grae, when you RP with someone on a regular basis and this sort of thing happens.
Now before I go any further, I do NOT RP with these people.
It's one of the major reasons I don't RP with them.
However. Let's say I'm in a deep RP plot with someone and that comes up as part of the plot?
How do I go about ignoring it? Do I forget the entire plot? Do I stop RPing with them?
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, you forget the entire plot and stop RPing with them. And kick yourself in the [censored] for having such crap judgement when it comes to RP partners. That said, it hasn't happened to you yet. Maybe you shouldn't worry so much about what some random goons want to RP. This isn't a community-wide crisis, this is a couple wankers who may or may not just be trying to stir something up. It's not something to get upset about.
