people leaving teams

I just was wondering, does anyone else get irritated when u finally get into a team, u do 1 or 2 missions, and then u have the "Incredible Shrinking Team" happen? What I mean is u do a couple of mishes with a really good/well-balanced group, and then the people whose mishes u did just leave, without saying anything, yer team just shrinks. To me that is kinda disrespectful and irritating. I am sorry, i had to vent.

Meanwhile "That other MMO?" Which one? In WoW you stay in a group till you finish the task at hand, be it an instance or Elite kill. FFXI you are attached at the hip with your group until you absolutely have to leave the computer, be it your house is on fire or your cath bag ruptures. EQ until recently you didn't leave a group for fear of being branded unreliable. Nope the 2 missions then bolt thing has always been stronger in CoH then anywhere else and it got worse with radio missions.
[/ QUOTE ]
Not so. Try early level questing in those games you mentioned. Not the high level raid stuff but the ordinary quests people team for, kill one thing and then poof, team disbanded. That's the kind of attitude I'm talking about. That's what those games bring to this one with the influx of their players, a selfish attitude.
[/ QUOTE ] Isn't wanting people to stick around on your team for mission after mission you being selfish too? I mean, you want them to stick around for your fun.
[/ QUOTE ]
Not so. It doesn't really matter one way or the other to me. I can quite easily drop out of a team and solo with any of my toons any time. But when I lead a team, I will switch from doing one player's missions to another's to another's with in a single play session. When player 1 remains on the team after doing a couple of his missions and then player 2 does also, this shows these players are team oriented and that fun is more than completing their own missions. When player 3 drops the team without a word the moment we finish his missions, that shows me that he is a selfish player who was only hanging around long enough for us to do his missions. Selfish is the best word to describe this behavior.
It doesn't affect my fun at all. I can easily search for more team members while the rest of us attempt to continue sans his assistance. I can easily also say, " Okay, thanks all. It's been fun teaming but I've got to run. Have a better day!" or "Thanks for the team all! I'm gonna go solo for a bit before I crash. Sleep fast! "
It's about manners. It's polite to say when and why you're leaving if it is at all possible. Go ahead and be selfish about it if you want, just give people a heads up before leaving them in the lurch.
[/ QUOTE ] I think I understand now what you're saying. The fact that when you are leader you switch between team members missions explains why you think that is selfish. And I don't disagree actually. I assume most leaders are doing their own missions or radio missions. I know what they say about assuming...
But either way, I consider it at worst a small breach in etiquette. I don't feel it is anything to get upset about and sent the quitter nasty tells demanding an explanation, which I have seen people do. And a few times when an answer was demanded of me, I gave the truth. Which those leaders didn't much care for being told they suck. Which is usually why I leave a team(on the rare occasion that I do team outside of a TF).
[ QUOTE ]
Yes, CoX has a more casual nature, but in the past it has been easy to get together a good PUG and do missions for hours with the same players. People used to tend to stick to a good team for longer periods because they didn't just care about getting their own missions done.
[/ QUOTE ]
I hate to bring up what many would consider to be a dead subject, but the change in attitute from "Gee, let's get a team together and run whoevers missions" to "If we don't run my missions I quit" that you are describing can largely be blamed (IMHO) on Issue 13. Prior to that issue, it really didn't matter whose missions were being run. Everyone on the team got XP, prestige, inspiration, slavage and recipe drops. Life was good for the PUG.
Then I13 introduced merits. Now, story arcs were good for earning merits in addition to regular drops. But only for the mission holder. The rolling PUG running whatever mish was closest has since become a rarity, as most (understandibly) would rather progress towards a reward for themselve rather than others.
Many people brought this up during I13 beta, and were called doom criers. It looks as if there may have been something to it...
Goodbye, City of Heroes...I'll miss you.

Maybe nobody likes teaming with you.
Personally, I'd like SOME comment when someone's leaving, if it's just "gotta go". Yeah, there are those circumstances where even that is not an option, but I don't think people's mothers drop dead all that often.
Then again, I'm a chatty person myself, and I'm more likely to stick on a team if there's someone I can just talk with, even if it's about nothing. Conversely, I can't really stand silent people in an MMO. Worst has been when I was duoing with a buddy of mine who was relatively new to the game then and got COINCIDENTALLY a tell from a toon five levels below us if she can join. He invited her because hey, why not? I'm not normally opposed to PLing, but when someone gets on a team to PL like that, and then stays silent when I REPEATEDLY try to talk to her, only to later give a short "need tp", I'm just really annoyed.
It's not really reasonable, I know, but there's a reason I tend to solo or duo a lot, and just use global channels as my replacement for team-chatter.

Really, it's not so hard is it? I always make a point of this, even if I'm leaving the team for whatever reason; I even drop a "I just don't see this working guys, I'm off, thanks and good luck" for a multi-team-wipe-of-idiocy PuG or "I'm sorry, I don't farm, thanks anyways." It's not hard at all unless you're being lazy or nasty for whatever reason you think justifies it.
Power outages, IRL emergency all those get a free pass, duh. But I doubt there are as many of those as I see people drop wordlessly.

If it makes anyone feel better, if I find myself on a particularly bad team with particularly bad players, I always remind them of how bad they are before I quit the team.
Good teams get a simple "Thanks for the team. It was fun. " and we part ways.

I was playing nice earlier. Here's the deal. I don't like teaming. So when I do it is for a specific reason. If I feel the team will not help me accomplish whatever goal I'm going for, then I will quit. I won't give notice or anything. I'll just quit the team. I personally don't care if it is a PuG radio team or a task force. If I don't think the team directly benefits me in the way I want, then I'll just leave.
Do you know why I will do it that way?
Simple, because I see teams as nothing more than fillers to use as I see fit. When they are no longer useful, I leave. That simple. If the leader has a problem and demands an answer, I'll let him/her know. But I won't be nice about it. I will be extremely blunt and critical.
But Munki, why be so mean? Simple, because I play this game so I can have fun. As long as I'm not breaking any rules, I don't give a crap about anybody else. If somebody's day is worse off because they ran across me, I don't care. I see all of yall as nothing more than fillers on the way to accomplish my goals.
edit: The people that feel they deserve some sort of explanation are self obsessed losers. That simple.

Or it means leaving your character in the mission instance while you're busy doing any number of RL things, but don't feel like logging out or don't have time.
Simple fact is, don't make assumptions just because you /friend someone and see them logged in. Unless you see them broadcasting LFT or in the market or what have you, it's really none of your business what they decide to do with their time instead of team with you. If you have a bad experience with them, /playernote them and move on. Don't come whining about it here (same goes for the original poster).

funny thing, was doing AE missions w/ a few people from my VG, we picked up a few PuGers that were asking for a AE team, oddly enough...one of those who were asking quit the team because we weren't doing any farming...then right back into Broadcast saying "lf AE team"
MunkiLord, I can agree w/ the whole "think you deserve a explanation" point you made to an extent though I don't think people really need a explanation, at least I don't, I'd be fine w/ something simple like "I gotta go." don't need a life story attached, just a bit of common courtesy I think is all some people ask for.

I think it's just a matter of common politeness, doesn't take a moment, makes people feel better and it's no skin of your nose. Then again some people are born to be rude or just think it's clever to emulate some sort of 'folk' ( I say this advisedly) hero.
@ the OP - I've noticed that this sort of thing has increased with the advent of AE, teams seem to be much more dynamic when I am playing AE missions than when doing generic story arcs - I excuse it because it appears to come with the territory. Try not to get upset about it and reassure yourself that there are many, many more decent and polite players that play CoX than impolite ones.

Quitting without a word on a normal PuG I can deal with. It might annoy me because I consider it impolite, but it doesn't cripple the team.
But quitting a bloody TASK FORCE because the team no longer "benefits you in the way you want"? I'm sorry, but that's nothing short of being a huge dick. It might surprise you, but you can't just recruit new people during a TF. A person quitting can be crippling when you're already at a Task Force's minimum requirements. Nothing's lovelier than someone quitting on you in a six-member Moonfire Task Force that's already pushing the team's limits. But you know what? I didn't mind because at least that person had the courtesy to say she'll be gone because her boss called.
I'm not telling you to be selfish. Hell, not like I need to, selfish people stick to themselves, so it's not like I usually have to deal with them. But if you join TFs just to quit because the team doesn't cater to your every whim, you're not just being selfish, you're being a huge bloody [censored].

I can't speak for Tyger42, but I'm inclined to agree with his comment. When I lead PuGs, people come and go. The team keeps going all the time, from the point it started to the point it ends - players are just replaced with other players.
Most players I recruit hardly stay for more than a hour, and most of them seem to be happy to be in the team, often giving thanks to everyone when they leave. Unless there's a massive hypocrisy conspiracy in CoH, I think it's safe to believe many (or at least, enough that I can always get a PuG going) folks enjoy teaming with me.
I also think it doesn't hurt anybody to just type "gotta go" before you leave a team. It takes about three seconds, and lets the leader know you didn't just DC / hit the Quit button accidentally.

Unless your every whim is "Please, please, for the 6th time, please stop using dimension shift on every other mob!", or something... :P
Lately I've taken to adding "blind invites may result in blind quits" in my lft comments; And even then, if the team is at least half-way decent or has a couple other worthwhile people on it, I'll excuse myself politely, and leave after the next mish.
I think I've only quit (in recent memory) without saying anything twice. First one was a fairly demanding farm, and 6 of the other team members were below lvl 10, and didn't contribute much other than faceplanting; I quit after the second team-wipe. The other was a blind invite to what turned out to be a bubble farm.
EDIT: also, to the OP, around what time are you playing? Late at night people will often log off to go to sleep, in the morning, they may be off to work/school... Although it would still be nice of them to send a short message, just a "sorry, gtg." would be better than nothing.

I know full well what you mean. I find it even more annoying to be invited to a team that is part way thought a mission, then dissolves when that mission is over.
When I lead a team, and it's nearing the end of the night for me, I wont invite more players to the team if it's only going to disband after the next mission. Whoever ends up with the star can do that after I leave.
"The one thing that can stop a full team of MasterMinds dead in its tracks... a doorway!" --Frogfather
I always say goodbye, or good night or whatever when I leave a team, and often I'll mention a mission or two ahead of time that "I've gotta go after one or more two missions."
I'm one of those people who enjoys teaming and playing solo, so there are lots of occasions where I'll get invited to a team after already playing solo for a couple hours. In those cases, another hour or so of teaming is usually enough for me. Even playing with an awesome team isn't as relaxing as soloing at my own pace, and playing with a mediocre team is sometimes downright stressful. So if I join a team and then drop after a few missions (I never drop after just one or two unless the team disbands, or just totally sucks), it's probably because I have been playing for a while already and need a break or have other stuff to do. I never have and never will drop from a TF/SF unless the team agrees to disband, or the TF/SF is completely hopeless - e.g. too few players to finish the mission.

See, quitting a TF full of idiots is something I can deal with, too. After all, chances are, that team will never finish the TF in the first place. It's just outright rude to join a TF and quit, not because something came up that needs your attention or because the team has a collective IQ of 12, but because you "got what you came for".
I do a lot of TFs, but my search message still says "Won't do TFs". The reason is simply because I'm not willing to commit to something when I can't reliably know that I won't have to leave on short notice. Things can always come up, but when you join a TF without any intention to see things through, it would be REALLY nice to know beforehand.
Except that wouldn't be selfish. I mean, who'd let someone on a TF who outright admits to have no intentions to stick along? He'd have to intentionally withhold that information to get on teams.
That's why he's a dick. Yeah, this game's about having fun, but there's lots of the people in the game. About the most frustrating thing in the game is spending an hour or two to get to the end and then find you now lack the manpower to finish it become some people dropped out. It happened one time to me and another we only barely pulled through, and it's really disheartening when you feel you've wasted hours of your life only to find you fail. That's why I took an instant dislike to that guy: He is willing to disregard and undo the enjoyment of others because he puts his own enjoyment above others. Normally not an issue in an MMO like CoX, but when you want to be a loner, don't bloody join a TF, for god's sake!
