people leaving teams
I got invited to a team once, then kicked out promptly about a minute after. They said my name was "Offensive"
Well if My mock character was offensive (when based off the Reichman) then so is CoH/V Content and they should just cancel their sub. Seriously, if theres a AV called "The Riechman" Then me having "The Riechman of Hell" Isn't that much worse... Seriously. I'm sure everybody knows how many demon themed villians/heroes are out there runnin/flying/jumping about and they gotta flip over a name... (when I've seen much worse) Yeah, if you don't like the name, don't invite in the first place.

I suggest you look up the definition of what "sociopath" means. It is not tantamount to saying "serial killer" or "Tony Soprano". These are examples of sociopaths, but not the definitions.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well aware of the actual definition.
Walking away from something that I find boring or a waste of my time without saying anything? Hardly a sociapathic tendency in my opinion. *shrug*
[ QUOTE ]
This certainly has nothing to do with my "outlook on life". Unless that "outlook on life" is that basic courtesy should be extended to other people. If you consider that "interesting" then that says something about you.

I find what people believe to be fascinating, I always have, call it amateur anthropology if you will.
If you really think that because someone does not follow what you, or even most people, think of as rules of politeness makes them a sociopath, I find that fascinating. I realize in this case you said tenancies.
We are not talking about going out of our way here to piss people off in a team. No direct grief, no cursing and no criticizing. We are talking about nothing more than not caring enough about some random group of strangers to not type anything when we are tired, bored or just done playing with them.
Why anyone thinks that there is some obligation to these random strangers in this setting, is fascinating to me.
This is a topic that has always grabbed my attention when it come up on game forums. One of the most interesting aspects is the lack of ability to discuss these things rationally, which is the funniest thing to me about Internet message boards in the first place.

And another thing, I'm just curious, why do people play mmo and solo? I assumed the point of mmo's is to play with other people? Solo is way to boring for me. Just my opinion and I know it may suck to some people.
[/ QUOTE ]
Because playing with other people can be done in more ways than just teaming with them. Just because you solo doesn't mean you're not playing with other people. Also, the gameplay experience of an MMO even for a soloer is COMPLETELY different from any single-player games.
This question comes up a lot. And, to be blunt, it's no less stupid the thousandth time than it was the first.

As I said earlier, god forbid people put RL before a game. Even if RL is my friends calling me up out of the blue wanting to go out for a beer. They're more important than some strangers I met half an hour ago through an internet game. Sure, I'll tell you I'm going as well ahead of time as I can, but I'm not going to feel obligated to blow my RL friends off so I can stick around and help a bunch of total strangers play a game.

I'd say it was the objectification of other people that raised the term 'sociopath' in question. Sociopaths see people as objects for their gratification. Viewing other players as objects for your playing pleasure without the provisio of treating them also as other people with feelings is one expression of that.
You likely run into sociopaths frequently. Most of them do not kill other people and make the headlines. They simply use them to their own benefit without remorse. Call it lack of empathy.

That's not what sociopath means at all. Sure, that attitude may be common among sociopaths, but it is not unique to them nor is it what makes them a sociopath. A sociopath is someone who lacks a moral compass, to put it in its simplest terms. ( Not that they simply have a different set of morals, but that they simply act with no regards to any moral code whatsoever )

Agreed if someone puts this game ahead of their wife, husband, RL friends, kids, house work, work ect... You might need to look at your priorities.
If you hold it against someone cause they leave your TF or you "AWSEM" team you just got on. You should be ashamed of yourselves. They do not need to explain their kid got sick, wife saying she wants to do something, husband needs something, a friend wants them to go out.
I enjoy this game and sometime people go away it happens. If I want to continue to play I will find someone else they are not the only ones on game. If I am doing a TF/SF with them. It would be nice if they say hey RL is calling, but not needed or required.

True. I wasn't giving the definition of the disorder, merely stating a chief characteristic. Obviously, someone who views others as objects also likely lacks a conscience ('moral compass'). But there are a whole hosts of characteristics, including narcissism, compulsive lying, aggression, paranoia, secrecy, poor impulse control, low threshold for tolerating boredom, inability to form or maintain relationships, etc.
Trying to uniformly describe sociopathy / APD is like trying to uniformly describe schizophrenia.

"If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world" (Francis Bacon)
Or, to hit a little closer to home for you:
"It costs nothing to be polite" (Winston S. Churchill)
So, bottom line, you find courtesy to be "fascinating". So be it. Peace.
Random strangers are what politeness exists for. Your friends and family are generally going to put up with you, for instance, if you forget to say your "please" and "thank you". Random strangers have no such trust built up.

It's even exhibiting sociopathic traits to say "I'm not having fun, so I'm going to quit without taking 3 seconds to clarify my intentions, because I don't care about the consequences of my actions on you, I'm just here to have my fun."
[/ QUOTE ]
I did not mention the word "sociopath," but it was the first think that crossed my mind. "Antisocial Personality Disorder" flitted by as well. I didn't mention these things because it was one post, which is not much to judge an entire person on. I will say this post shocked me, considering who it was coming from. Totally out of left field. There are people on these forums whom that would not surprise me to hear that coming from them. But... wow.
But anytime I see something like "...As long as I'm not breaking any rules, I don't give a crap about anybody else. If somebody's day is worse off because they ran across me, I don't care. I see all of yall as nothing more than fillers on the way to accomplish my goals"...
Wow.
I read charts fileld with lifetime's-worth of that kind of sentiments all day long. I can tell [general] you that the people attached to those charts are not ever doing very well in the Game of Life - often that chart includes documents from the metro jail as well, and letters from immediate family members telling the treatment team that they do not want to be informed about the patient's outcome, because the patient is as dead to them.

City of Heroes is a game. The purpose of a game is to have fun. If you are not having fun change what you are doing.
City of Heroes is about you. Be greedy. Think about yourself first. There is absolutely no one in the world, not the developers, not your best friend, not your siblings and not even your mom, who knows when you are having fun as much as you do. You are best suited to the task of making sure you have fun. You. You you you you you.
I feel absolutely no guilt nor shame when I leave a team with no warning. I honestly feel no anger, hostility nor resentment when someone leaves one of my teams without warning. Please leave my team if you are not having fun. I'm fairly disgusted when others feel otherwise.
I understand no one is perfect and you can't know everything before hand. I understand things will change. But do your best to communicate what you expect from teammates and what you intend to bring to teams. Eliminate as much "un-fun-itude" as possible before it occurs. Stop "un-fun-itude" as soon as possible.
(I should add that when I'm on a Task Force and not having fun I'll ask to leave. If I'm requested to stay because I am considered crucial to the team's success I will stay. Though, if I no longer am crucial I will leave. I have left TFs before they're fully complete after all the "hard parts" were defeated.)

The core issue that is being sidestepped is merely one of common courtesy. I don't care if you wanna leave halfway through a mission...just say so...that way, the team isnt held up deciding whether to wait for you to come back (maybe he dc'd) or to fill your spot.
TF's tho, I have a different take on, but again, it's a matter of courtesy. If you don't plan of finishing the TF, don't join. Simple. Yes, RL can interfere with TF's....simply say that you are leaving due to circumstances. That's all.
The attitude that other people don't matter if they interfere with your happiness and enjoyment of the game....not gonna psychoanalyze, but it's just plain rude.
[/ QUOTE ]
I am rude. I do speak my mind. I'll answer questions honestly. Most often I do say "I'm going to leave the team." Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I get asked "Why?". "I'm not having fun on this team."
I rarely join PuGs because most often pick up teams stand around talking about things they think they "need". If a pug stood around RPing or discussing some interesting topic that be cool. I'd be ok with standing around doing that. Instead, they are discussing how we "need this" or "need that" and "we won't start until we have this" or "that many players". Or let's wait around for him to sell, train, go to wentworth's, buy SOs and comb his hair. Why bother? He can join us in the middle. He can join us next mission. I think every single one of those needs is stupid, wrong and misguided. I think the only thing we need to do is enter the mission and start shooting stuff.

NEED HEALER!
Yeah, the beautiful thing about CoX is that team composition is irrelevant 90% of the time, and your "role" in a team comes down to preference. When I start a PuG or TF, I do things on a first-come-first-served basis, and as a rule said approach ends with victory on our side. Hell, I even take the minimum requirements of TFs literally. If I have six people and can't find two more interested to join, then that's enough to start.
On the other hand, when I'm joining someone else's TF, I have a pretty generous ten minute limit to team-forming. Some people have less patience. It's all cool. After all, we're here to have fun, not to wait.
Yes, I don't think anyone can disagree that fun is the main purpose of any game, but when your fun comes at the expense of someone else's, well, I think it's time show some restraint. People quitting without a word annoys me, but it's just a pet-peeve of mine that doesn't cripple my enjoyment of the game. TFs are more of an exception than the rule, anyway, so me getting heated about that isn't exactly relevant to the whole rest of teaming. TFs are the only time where leaving just 'cuz crosses a line, since those are team efforts by design. In every other case, I'm cool with people quitting.

I like SMurphy.
While I tend to give notice when I'm leaving a team, I don't feel obligated to do so. Otherwise I'd wind up saying things like, "This team is like sticking your face in a box fan, I'm out" which is neither polite nor constructive (as it doesn't give reasons or ways it could improve). But perhaps because I've actually played a game long past the 'fun' out of a sense of obligation to a group of people (who, incidentally, I had met in person on a few occasions) that tempers my view on this.
