This is sad.

I met someone last night that said they have played CoH before. They got the AE box and played for a month or so and said they got tired of the MA stuff and then quit.

A new player didnt even know that there was a BUNCH of normal content out there for them to enjoy! They didnt know anything but AE. And, they got burned out fast on it.

That is damn sad. After hearing that person say that, I now believe something needs to be done about new people that come into the game. They need to know about their contacts and the normal content that is there. Not just AE.

Before I didnt care, but after talking to them I believe something needs to change. I didn't think it was this bad.
Maybe we need to once in a while broadcast in atlas that there is normal content out there for them to enjoy.

After I explained to them what they missed, they got interested again and will be coming back.

P.S. Don't know how well I said what I wanted to. I am VERY tired.

Making the low level missions less crappy would help, too.

I'm sorry, but I don't get people like that. Don't they read? Didn't they do the tutorial that explained how contacts work, how enhancements and combining enhancements work, and all that?

If they didn't, then it's on their own heads; the MA has nothing to do with that. The normal content is not hidden. If one does the tutorial, it's all pretty obvious.

There comes a point when personal responsibility and taking the time to actually see what the game does comes into play.

And do we really need yet another thread on this topic? What's wrong with the other "New player experience" thread that is already hashing over just this?

Except on Villain side; I hate Kalinda's arcs. That's one bonus to the AE: I can make villain content that I like better and bypass Kalinda/Burke (although Burke mixes some good stuff in too).

I "could" understand newbies who don't know there's a life out of AE... but old players coming back ?

Come on ! These KNOW there's a game outside of AE.

Now since I haven't started a new character since I14 dropped it was news to me (or so I'm told, still haven't made a new character since I14) that the contact for the AE tutorial pops up when you first zone in from the new character tutorial, bumping your normal first contact off of your nav bar as the waypoint. This leads new players who don't know better straight to the AE building.

They see the endless broadcasts in Atlas for teams forming and join them. Getting sucked into AE farms where they level fast and have no clue how the game works. ::sigh::

Best solution isn't removing the AE but instead removing it from Atlas, Galaxy, Kings row, Mercy, and Port Oaks. And having the auto contact to the AE bumped up to happen around level 15 - 20. That way those who want to can still make their way to an AE to play but it doesn't automatically suck new players in until they have learned there is more to the game.

I feel the opposite. Hero side the conctacts prior to Steel Canyon (or hollows if you go that route instead of Kings Row) feel like a waste of time. They don't even have anything resembling a story, it's just random crap that was slapped on the contact for whatever reason.

Also too many street hunts.

low level hero content suffers from intense suckitude.
it's mildly less irritating that in days past thanks to various innovations (teleporters, jet packs, etc), but it's still slapped together, deadly dull and travel intensive. It encompasses a lot of bad, discredited design philosophies.
If I were the devs I'd certainly want to funnel 'newbies' into AE- it's a much more involving introduction to the game than the stock content or a sewer team.

low level villain content suffers from intense overexposure. It's much more engaging and well written than blue side, but there's so little of it that a few trips up the ladder drains its essence. But at least it's fun the first few times you run it, unlike blue.

i'm leaning towards having lvl 10 be the minimum lvl the ae becomes available and allowable to use.

for many it really isn't an inconvenience to get to 10, and for new players the game has a chance to appear a bit larger than just the ae building and learn a few basics along the way.

having said that, it would mean taking the ae offices out of atlas and co.

no, it doesn't solve the human condition.

Thats not a bad idea Draconis...
Really though... Going Rogue is going to change how new characters start out. Just gotta be patient...all this doom and gloom [censored] is ridiculous... Alot of people blame someone or something else outside themselves.... foolish.

They want you to be able to use it from 1 to 50. A minimum level requirement defeats that purpose.

Maybe if you opened it for your whole account once you hit level 20, or something, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's still a rough kick in the pants.

I had a similar suggestion in another thread: a character would have to be level 30 OR have a 3 month vet badge to be able to use AE. That way at least you'd know the regular contact system etc before getting sucked in. Because of the twist of vet badges, you could start AE at level 1 if you'd been playing the game for a little while.

[/ QUOTE ]IIRC, it worked that way in i14, but at least with the character I made since i15 dropped (red side) you don't get the popup until level 5. It's a small improvement, but I think somewhere around 15 would be better.

Sounds like everquest honestly.

On my first toon, I was level 12 or 15. I was doing the noobie armor quest sets. You had to collect calcified bone pieces from various skeletons. It must have taken 12 hours to get all the pieces. They were lore/no trade so you had to loot them.

the first time I quit WoW was after gathering some super annoying # of crockolisk crystals, or some nonsense. The 'right kind' only spawned on this one small section of coastline, and of course there were usually some other players working on the same quest so we kept stepping on each others toes.

I usually don't mind that particular mechanism, but that time it ticked me off. Maybe because there were so few of them to mow.

Go to this random series of bland linear hallways and kill the same 2 mobs until it says "Mission Complete."

Most of this game is beyond repetitive. Story is the only thing that gives missions substance and the low level content has none.
