What he was doing technically falls under Section 6, Subsection D, item 9.

It's split up, so I'll give you the text in sentence form.

"You agree not to use the service to stalk or otherwise harass another member."

What he was doing qualifies as harassment. Especially if I'm reading a few of the chat/kill logs right.

Foolish man. Nothing is harassment in the name of SCIENCE!

Okay a bit of SearchFu turns up the Forums user Fasque as Twixt's player.

Sending a PM to The Ocho to see if we can get his posts locked and saved for a bit. Apparently there's going to be a counterpoint response to the article by some of the players here.

Note: This is NOT something that's going to be "Oh he was a [censored] + character assasination + rant" thing. We do not, however, want someone reactivating their account and deleting some of the dirty little tracks that point to their research method being slightly less clean and forthright than they intimated.

The most hated person in CoH....and I've never heard of him?

I love it when reporters do their background investigation to get both sides of a story. It is hardly too much of a journalistic effort to scan the so called threads and forums of the offical boards to cite such obvious hate

Just lazy and inaccurate. Even reading these stories about the professor, he griefed folks then was all shocked and shaken when someone threatened him?

*facepalm* To be honest I am glad I have never heard of him, but I will say said research sounds a tad flawed.

Sounds like everyone (both he and the people he fought) took everything too seriously. So, your normal day in a PvP area in any game.

Well, I wrote a rather long winded reply to the article, but it seems like the site simply swallowed it up into the void... so I'm just gonna post stuff here.

To understand where I'm coming from with this, a little tangent:

One of my good friends is a Psychology major (that just graduated at the top of her class... honestly not surprised in the slightest by that), and most of her focus was cross/multi-cultural psychology, as well as being involved in many things that caused her to be around many people from various different countries/soceities all around the world... so she has a rather good idea how many different societies act in comparison to American society (most people don't realize how grounded in the specific society Psychology actually is!).

She spent a good bit of time teaching me about differences with how other societies work, one of them being that in many societies, instead of starting out being more politie/serious with people, they start out where they make fun of each other, and only when they're actually comfortable with the person will they become serious with them. In those societies, starting out being serious comes off as offensive or even that you're trying to scam them/manipulate them.

The reason I bring that up, is I believe it applies very much to both Freedom (my home server if any of you haven't already realized ) as well as PvP in this game (and normally in general). It's okay to talk trash to people, it's okay to make fun of them, it's okay to be in your face- it's not rude, it can actually be polite and respectful! People from other cultures might see that as bad or primitive, but I have to disagree with that notion, it's merely a different way. The way I interact with one of my closest friends is generally always to taunt her/make fun of her/etc... which makes the moments where we're actually serious with each other all the more significant and meaningful. There's pro's and con's to each system, and I don't think anyone can say that one is better than the other... I'd say that there's a time and a place for both (being adaptable is very important!).

With that said, it's not shocking to me in the slightest that Twixt got those reactions in PvP on Freedom- it's part of the culture, not to mention he was intentionally trying to provoke those reactions! I can't say that I'd take anything seriously that anyone said to me in a PvP zone (I take it about as seriously as all that chainmail spam friends used to forward to me that warned that if I didn't send it off I'd die in my sleep that night... fyi, I'm not dead yet).

From the sound of it, he didn't come up with any at all interesting results, mostly just more flamebait for the media to try manipulate to bash their competition (they do compete with games for your time!).

Remember some of our conversation at dinner that night Philotic? I have lots of experience with people attempting to do exactly what he's done.

On a side note did anybody who may have been included in this so called "study" consent to being part of this research?

odd.

He justifies being a complete jerk to everyone deliberately and calls it research.

So he used a live commercial MMO to conduct "experiments" on other people?

Well then, I'm sure he remembered to gather the needed written permissions from not only NCSoft, but also from all people involved in these "experiments". I mean, otherwise he'd leave himself open for all sorts of nasty ethics complaints. Or worse. But as a professor, I don't need to tell him things like that, I'm just a lowly Master of Arts, and even I knew not to do anything that would get the university in trouble.

So it would be extremely sad if someone with grounds for en ethics complaint were to contact his university to make said complaint. Especially in writing. But I'm sure he's been careful and only killed the avatars of people who already agreed to be a part of the "experiment". It's just good ethics to do so.

Sorry, can't keep that level of sarcasm up...

Anyway, if you feel you've been mistreated by these "experiments", and feel vindictive, contact the university directly and complain. Even better if a group of people make a joint complaint. When entering a PVP Zone you agree to getting attacked and killed, but I don't see anywhere in the EULA of agreeing to be part of scientific "experiments". Actually, I don't see anything in the EULA about allowing people to conduct experiments on other players either.

So if you really want to cause trouble, don't just refute his paper, do an ethics complaint as well. I can't be part of it, though, didn't PVP when he was active. But if his "experiment" affected you negatively and you didn't agree to being used as a guinea pig, then you're in the clear for a complaint. Best if you have some data to back it up with, of course, but you don't have to follow the scientific method in a complaint. He, on the other hand, must in his paper.

So..... he's a Professional Griefer? Where do I sign up!?!

EDIT: Actually READING the article.... let me sum this up and see if I understand.

He went into a zone where players are competing against each other, a zone where players are supposed to attack other players. A zone where the purpose is to be "mean" to each other. A zone where aggression is a VIRTUE.

And he's surprised when people get angry and aggressive at him?
Someone needs to take this guy's PhD away. Seriously.

[/ QUOTE ]

Specifically - he got disappointed/angry at others ire at him when he purposely ignored the standard conventions in the zone to continually tp-drone other players - something that really requires no skills just a good to-hit roll and allows no defense if that roll gets through.

I wouldn't say Twixt was responsible for it.

I'd say Twixt's methods merely highlighted some of the problems with Old Style PVP.

TP Foe would be the issue at hand here, I'm assuming. They changed TP Foe to add an 0.75-second "only affecting self" period after getting TP'd, as well as resistance to teleport for a few seconds (so you can't get TP'd again immediately afterward, or get chain TP'd). However, the drones outside the bases ignore that "only affecting self" and it's still very possible to TP someone into a drone.

Twixt didn't actually leave after I13 (or if he did, someone else was playing his account). I've killed him (Party, his BS/Regen) a few times in Freedom RV.

Pfft, I'm not angry at people TP droning in PVP. I'm just disgusted at a professor wasting his time with something like this and possibly opening himself up to all sorts of ethics trouble if people who were affected by him were to complain. That's just sloppy academics. Acceptable as a first or second year student, perhaps, but not at professor level. Publish or perish, yes, but there are other ways of doing that.

But as I said, I can't do anything about it, I wasn't affected by his PVP antics. Those that were, however, can. Sure, it'd prove him "right", but it'd be amusing to watch.
