Why is the Cryptic logo still around?
I'm not sure, but it may have been worked into the agreement, that even though NCSoft owns the rights to the game part of the deal is that they must have Cryptic's logo up or something.
Or maybe Cryptic still owns a kind of "patent" or something on some of the systems, like the costume creator.

They originally created the engine and it its part of the licensing agreement.

I believe its because they still liscence the game engine from Cryptic.
Always remember, we were Heroes.
IIRC, Paragon Studios is licensing the game engine from Cryptic, and part of the deal when PS bought the franchise was that the Cryptic logo would remain. I'll see if I can find official documentation of that.

Interesting. Perhaps that is why they are talking about engine upgrades and such. Maybe GR will introduce a new, internally developed game engine. It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to pay licensing fees to the competition, or perhaps they are just sick of using the Cryptic engine and want something that reflects the needs of the player today (customization, etc.)

Hey, it works for my mom, why not now?
it was part of the severance package that the Cryptic logo stays on the game.

Usually bashing on *cough* that other game *cough* gets an eye roll from me, but that made me chuckle a bit.
Not really bashing on a game so much as Jack Emmert's questionable ability to deliver a decent game.

not to dis what he's done... but from what I understand the CO dev staff (Emmert is not a dev over there, IIRC) isn't 100% professional in their public remarks about CoH/V. Which makes me wonder how good their work ethics are if their ethics are not 100%.

I haven't seen anything they've directly stated about CoH/V, but I have been getting this same impression from that whole team. The whole "I'm sorry... (that we got caught)" thing with inviting popular CoH players to their beta certainly didn't help. I don't think those were the devs though, which is why I generalized it by saying the team.

Well, he and his team invented this one.
Which, as other have noted, is why the Cryptic logo is still around - the game engine is, as I seem to recall, still liscenced from cryptic. Im not sure how big an over-haul it would take for their agreement to no longer apply, but I suspect it would be a much bigger re-write of the game engine than they're likely to embark on.

The stump speach runs something along the lines of, "we enjoyed making that game and we're very proud fo it, but we reached the limits of waht we could do with it and it was time to move on and make something better". This, of course, is more or less gauranteed to get under the skin of major City of Heroes fans, particularly those who feel threatened by the advent of direct competition and the possible impact on CoHs playerbase. But its a highly effective strategy, and you cant fault them for doing what works.

It was likely their marketing team that came up with that idea, but if people want to believe it was Jack soliciting them they will.
I have a hard time blaming them for targeting influencial people in their exact target market. I'd be a lot more upset if that game was live and running, that would be poaching. As it is I look at it as "hey you are an 'expert' in this field, would you test our product and give feedback?".
I understand PS getting mad at it, but I don't understand ANY player getting mad. Not only is it a compliment to you as a player, but it is a free opportunity.
I drive a nissan, I sure wouldn't get upset if Toyota sent me a letter asking me to test out their new car in development. I could understand Nissan getting mad if a Toyata rep came in to a Nissan dealer and did it, but there is no reason for me the customer to feel anything other than excited.

You misunderstand. The reason it made people like me upset is because they provided beta access to people in another game, who in some cases weren't even following champions online or had any intention to do so. Meanwhile, beta is still closed for people to people who had been eagerly following the game and been signed up and waiting, and in many cases, still are as I type this.

[/ QUOTE ]In addition to other problems with their tactic, Cryptic had (and has) people dying to get into the CO beta, and yet they tried poaching people from CoH that don't even have interest in CO, totally ignoring the people that actually want to play.
Hell, they still haven't accepted Repeat Offenders' guild application to the CO beta, and even Castle has publicly admitted the impact RO has had on this game.

I don't misunderstand at all, you do. They went after INFLUENCIAL people in their exact target market. The people beating down their door are just people, groupies if you will. They want people that have the ability to bring as many people as possible once the game goes live.
Viral marketing.
It can backfire though, if the product sucks those same influencial people can influence a lot of people.
Just so it's clear, you are upset because you were not offered a beta despite wanting one, while someone else was?
If that is the case you are not one of the people I'm talking about. People get upset all the time when they aren't picked first for dodgeball.
This might just be me being ignorant of the world of copyright law, but Cryptic Studios doesn't make the game anymore, and when they sold the game to NCSoft nearly every member of the CoH team went with it. (As I recall there was like one guy who didn't make the move.) So why is the Cryptic logo still here on the forums, the official site and in the game itself (to the exclusion of the Paragon Studios logo in-game)?
Issue 16 made me feel like this.
