NGE was the expansion to Star wars galaxies. Its the one that had players protesting on every planet they had defined and had GM's teleporting thousands of players at a shot into space(Which by the way didn't exist yet).

Over their bungling of that incident I think they lost more players than COH ever had. I think the swing was something on the order of from 1 million to somewhere less than 100K .

Which is why i'm hoping bioware pulls off SWTOR. Its the only MMO on the horizon I'm excited to see.

There's a lot of misinformation about SWG being slung around in this thread.

SWG never surpassed EQ, for one. It never had near a million. Last I knew, it settled at (these days, I believe) around or slightly more than Cities.

I'm hazy on the precise cause and effect of the NGE, but it was either Lucasarts pressuring Sony to make it more actiony, or Sony making an attempt (and, despite all the bad press you hear about it, succeeding, mind you) at keeping the license by staunching losses.

Before NGE it was actiony. Post NGE took the action away, it made it a typical mmo style gameplay, whereas before you could fire while running or anything. NGE made it so you had to have your crosshair on the target and had no way of attacking anything that may be hitting you from behind unless you were facing it. I much preferred the pre NGE system, it was much more theatrical in the combat spectrum.

The only saving grace of SWG at this point is the combat in space. That is the only fun component these days.

But Sony did also completely botch Matrix Online, as was pointed out too. It's a game I was going to buy and play religiously - until CoH came out on time and Mx didn't. And then it looked worse and worse, as they changed publishers and teams, and then it actually came OUT and was... meh. I wanted to play the game that they originally talked about on the vhs tape.

You are swapping combat upgrade, (CU) with NGE. The one million figure came from what SONY was saying for presales of the NGE.

I had a subscription to the Station Pass for about 3 years. I've played EQ, EQ2, MXO, SWG, Planetside. Matrix has a lot to be desired. I found it extremely boring and nothing like I expected.

The combat system is very different than other mmos. When you fight you don't have direct control of the movements. Your character will dodge or punch or duck as the movements of the opponent dictate. All you really do is enhance each move as its made. I didn' care for it that much and it took me a few days to even figure it out. I needed some help from more advanced players to explain the more detailed portions of combat that I wasn't understanding as well.

The tutorial was marginal at best in introducing the major gameplay features. I wasn't happy with it at all.

True, but it was sony that completely changed the combat system mid stride further alienating the player base that was already used to the WB system.

I probably quit playing before that point. I had started just after the combat changes and everyone was griping about it. I learned in the new combat era but didn't play more than a few months because I didn't like it.

By the time Sony got to it I think their only goal really was to drive the last nails in the coffin

I don't know that it would have been either better OR worse had they not picked it up, because of all the trouble it'd already been through. But it still was one of those things that Sony COULD have really improved, and didn't.
