Now there's a FAQ, but not a very useful one.

But it's not a full on boxed game. If that's what someone wants, they can buy and play that.

This is an MMO and should really only be compared to other MMOs. In that sense, it's been cheaper than most for the last 5 years. Man up and pay the salaries for the cool stuff you (general you, not Kong-you) want. The game can't expand the hired help, and run servers, and give free content on $15 a month forever. And some players don't pay $15 because they pre-pay.

The problem with people that have no personal business experience is that they fail to realize the rising cost of expenses besides workers salaries and benefits. Rent goes up, electric and gas goes up, insurance goes up, etc. etc. Believe me, it doesn't go down in a bad economy either. If CoH/V had a boxed expansion every year that had to be paid for I could understand players getting annoyed, but 2 in 5 years? Give me a break.

If that's the case, shouldn't boxed games be going up too? Is Bioshock 2 going to cost $75?

Eh, $15/month is a lot of money over time. It's like buying a whole new game every 3 months. Servers don't cost that much to run (real games can run them for free!), and even the GM staff is pretty minimal from what I've been able to determine. CoH may be cheap my MMO standards, but it's still expensive compared to buying full on boxed games.

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree with the highlighted premise. Yes, it's mathematically like buying a new game every 3 months, but do the new games last 3 months of intense gameplay like MMOs do? Not many, from my experience. What about consoles where you have to pony up several hundred dollars upfront before you can even buy games to go with it? Or, in the 360s case, buy online time. Another way to look at it is a movie at the theater costs $7-10 for 2-2.5 hours of entertainment.

MMOs are dirt cheap entertainment.

Considering how infrequently we've been 'forced' to buy expansions, I have no problem with Paragon Studio's decision to launch a new one.

Let's QFT this. I'm a pretty casual player, and I've logged over 3,100 hours in the game. Based on the yearly sub of $144, for five years I've been paying 23 cents an hour.

A two hour movie costs 10 bucks!

We're making out like bandits.

For all I know it might. I pre-ordered Sims 3 CE and it's $70. I've never paid $70 for any Sims game before, though I did buy every expansion and there were a lot of them.

MMOs are more vulnerable to things like utility prices because the development team continues to operate beyond release of the box. Once Bioshock 2 is developed, pressed, marketed, and shipped, the costs end.

OTOH, I played Starcraft for hundreds of hours on the $45 + $40 expansion (IIRC).

In comparison, people with the 60 month vet badge will have dumped about $1000 into CoH (minus some for buying time in big chunks, but you get the idea).

Maybe I'm skewed a bit because CoH isn't the only thing I play, I mix it in with other games, but it's also by far the most I've ever spent on a computer game, even if you count entire franchises.

Starcraft (and Warcraft, Diablo, etc.) are good examples of games that compare favorably to MMOs for value. That doesn't mean that MMOs aren't a good deal compared to most video games (I finished Fallout 3 in 40 hours, for example, so that's more than a buck an hour there), and almost any non-video game form of entertainment.

People can always complain about for-pay add-ons but we've received a mountain of free content from the devs.

Well he is identified as a Dual Pistol character in the press release. EDIT: Actually, now that I read more carefully, it just says Pistol Wielding, it doesn't specify Dual Pistols

City of Heroes Going Rogue will introduce a new alignment system that helps players explore the shades of gray that lie between good and evil. For the first time, hero characters can become villains and vice versa, enabling hero archetypes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and villain archetypes to experience Paragon City™. Clearly marked missions, in addition to behaviors and decisions made by the player, will move a hero's or villain's moral compass, which could eventually change the hero's or villain's alignment. Going Rogue will also introduce two primary new fictional characters representative of this alignment shift in the game's lore: Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed.

Paragraph from the press release I believe Des is talking about, emphasis mine. Yes, the new guy wields a pistol. Where it says he has two pistols is beyond me. Now, is it kind of safe to guess dual pistols, based on what posi mentioned during the 5 year anniversary day? Sure. But it has not been directly stated to us as of yet.

Sorry DC, I was editing as you were posting. Folks are assuming Dual Pistols based off Positorn interview. I agree it's a stretch to assign it to Maelstrom.

What about City of Villains Going Good?

Man, those devs really do hate villains

On a serious note, this looks awesome. That trailer gave me a bit of the chills. Now to play the waiting game.

Its simple really.

Posi said in an interview that Demon Summoning and Duel Pistols would be coming in the future.

Then in the press release it states Malestrom is a pistol wielding hero gone rogue and Desdemona is a Demon Summoning villain who has been redeem put 2 and 2 together it's kind of easy to come to that conclusion.

Wow just wow.....and I don't know who said dual pistols but I saw in the trailer a pistol in one hand and an empty holster on the same hip. and upon closer inspection I saw what clearly is another gun in holster on the opposite hip. That clip and Posi's announcement about dual pistols it's not a far stretch on the imagination to imply that Maelstrom is dual pistols. Besides there already is a dual pistol wielding npc... Lady Jane from the midnighter arc.

Don't Malta bosses have dual pistols too?

Edit - not meant to come across as picking on details, just other mobs have two pistols from what I recall, as well as dual wield in the Thugs MM set. I think they have been teasing us for a while.

Watching the news of the expansion spread it's looked like City of Paranoia around here: "The email proves nothing, it's a fake!" "Just because NPCs have new powers doesn't mean players will get them!" "I only saw one pistol, you can't possibly make the leap of faith to assume he has another."

Fact: Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning will be in the Expansion.

And 40 hours is even phenomenal compared to some games I've spent $50 on. I remember beating Freedom Fighters and Red Faction 2 in under 6 hours without trying. *Shakes fist*

Also, there's a wiki timeline listing for someone named Maelstrom being born, but not sure who that is.

Something I just thought of, since characters can switch sides, how will they handle Epics / Patrons? Will this allow side switchers to have access to the other's ancillary pools?

In the survey, they did mention that characters that didn't shift in alignment could get rewards that swappers couldn't... interesting.

Yeah, I was wondering about the patrons as well, though Tyrant's world may have its own version of Recluse and gang that are actually good, which would then be your new patrons or something.

At any rate, it's interesting, though you would think they would have waited until they could have said more about this, since I15 is still in the works and not in beta yet. I guess they want to show they're ratcheting things up, which is a good thing.
