Issue 13 Update

Ya know...just some sort of ballpark release date would be kinda cool. Ah well.

They said i13 was going to be big so I assume all of the unreleased info will be significant. The stuff they have announced so far is not overly impressive so I hope we have more big items in i13.

I think the mission creator will be great and add way more variety to the game.

Some posts have expressed concerns over not wanting to missions created by other players. I believe they are concerned these missions may just suck maximum back side. I think concerns will be alleviated by peer reviews and DEV'S choice/picks. I am sure there will be a TON of lame missions but; hopefully people will learn from what they're doing wrong and correct the shortcomings of the mission.

Anyway, I can see where this tool will give us missions better than what the DEVS could offer. The rewards may not be as great as a regular mission but the potential for variety and new looks is HUGE. I CANNOT stand seeing the same looking mission over and over and over and over and over ..... I know we'll have the same tile sets but I am hoping we can customize the boss, mobs etc. Just having the boss LOOK like a boss would be great - I think it's lame when the target of the mission looks just like the rest of the spawn group (maybe once in a while this is ok but it happens far too often).

Anyway, there is great potential here.

I wonder if sales from the booster packs will expedite the release of I13? if so and if they will have Zig tilesets in the mission creator; I'd feel inclined to purchase the cyborg pack.

Dear Positron,

Good afternoon. Thank you for responding to our questions for more information about Issue 13.

And on a side note. Please fix the store so that I can purchase Booster Packs for other players as gifts. I'd like to purchase 10 or so of these for my friends that also play. Plus I'd like to give you my money to help with the development of my favorite game. However, since I only have 1 account and I can't very well purchase 10 Cyborg Packs for 1 account then I guess that I'll have to keep the money that I would have liked to have given to your company.

P.S. Rocket Pack costume items please.

Thank You.

Dear Peregrine Falcon,

Thank you for your feedback. We would LOVE to come up with a way for players to "gift" our Super Boosters to other players. The real problem with this lies in credit card fraud. It may seem like a simple problem, but it's really very complex. Once we have a workable solution that Billing and Customer Service can sign off on, we will allow players to gift Microtransactions post haste.

Yes, yes, Rocket Packs are on Sexy Jay's todo list, I just am not exactly clear on when they will be done.

Hope this clears things up for you a little bit.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think CC fraud would be the issue, it would be transfering the purchased ####-####-####-####-3438 to your friend.

The CC fraud could occure for anything, so 1 online game charge would be the least of my worries with a lost or stolen card. Here's my idea for implementation...

When you purchase, it asks if you are buying for yourself or friend. Then if it's a gift, it would ask for the recipients global name. This means you need to know the game account password for the cardholder and global of the recipient.

Because...

The Credit Card would have to be associated with the purchasers account used for monthly renewal (game time card players are SOL)...Fraud is now a moot point as I don't give out my NCSoft account info, but my CC goes to restraunts etc...

Using your game database, it PMs it to recipients forum e-mail using their global name input by the purchaser. Then they open the PM, copy and paste into the upgrade of their account. You might even include a link to apply it in the e-mail, and BAM...Gift done!!!

Cheers

So the update is that i13 is coming. Great.

In other news, i14 will come after i13. Maybe.

I'd look into breaking up the issues a bit and having new releases be a bit more frequent.

Given how (apparently) close they are to trying to wrap up the feature set in i13, I can't envision them adding anything this late in the process unless they have relationships with contractors that are a) already familiar with their code/tools from previous work and are b) available right now. I mean, if I was a few weeks away from finishing a major project and someone said "hey, we made some money so I can afford to give you a programmer for 3 weeks," I wouldn't know what to do with him that would result in anything nontrivial. That's just not enough time for someone to climb the learning curve and do anything significant.

Here's an idea. We can buy character slots (and other things) from within the game client in the login screen. What if you allow players to purchase the booster pack from within *that* store, and allow players to specify the global handle of the player they wish to gift it to. Then when that player logs in, they'll have a screen where they can "pick up" the gift and activate it on their account, or refuse it (why? in case someone accidentally buys something for someone that already has it).

Edit: Yahrr

I just re-up my subscription a month at a time when something actually arrives (thank you paypal option), play it (which rarely takes a full month to figure out what the new entertainment value proposition is), and report back to my circle of on-line friends about whether or not there is anything going on in here that they should bother to come back for. There are other MMOs making solid cases for playing them now rather than soon, so we manage to entertain ourselves.

Take all the time you want. Really. Issue 13 as outlined is the first thing we've seen in nearly 2 years that might have enough meat to be worth $15 a month based on their play-styles (when you have a solid group of 6-8 who have played together regularly for 5 years this game has just about 0 mechanical challenge - but we enjoyed reading the stories ). We really are totally ok with delays because we've long since stopped funding them. Most of them joined up for CoV-only and the release debacles that followed that left a really bad taste in their mouths about steadfast support as a response to the word 'soon'.

The delay is because devs started getting paid by the hour.

Ok look. I'm not sure what people are expecting with this mission editor thing. But what I strongly suspect we are getting is a way to GENERATE missions that are very similar in scope to what we get in-game now. Yes we can edit the text, yes we can probably import major NPCs and determine what type of mission objectives there are. Unfortunately, from the last things we've heard about the editor, major customization is going to be impossible. Has that changed since the last info we got? Who knows...but I'm thinking not.

The other thing I want to say about this missions editor feature is that I'm finding it hard to get excited over players creating the same kinds of missions that the devs have been creating for over 4 years. I don't have any doubts that our community can produce some great story ideas and fiction for their missions. My problem is that those missions will still boil down to: Enter through front door, defeat a truckload of improbably placed enemies, click on glowy(s)/and or escort NPC to door.

If the Devs had first brought out an issue that added new types of things to do in missions like avoid or disable traps, investigative puzzles, security espionage and alternate missions paths and arcs to name a few, and THEN had announced this mission editor with more customizable options along with everything else I mentioned above, I'd be doing backflips.

As it stands now, if I'm going to be doing the same types of things I do in regular missions now but with a lesser reward, what exactly am I getting out of them aside from a potentially well written piece of player fiction?

What I'm trying to get at is that the basic mission system in the game needs to be evolved first before player created missions using that same structure become exciting.

This is an MMO. Its not a game like Neverwinter Nights, for example. You won't be able to import your own art assets, create new tilesets from scratch or change the way powers work even.

I usually try to look at things from all sides, but I'm having a hard time seeing how this feature is the only major thing coming with Issue 13. That's not me crying DOOM! I'm gonna keep on playing because I love this game, I just hope something else big is on the issue 13 list that has yet to be made public.

Quality over quantity, Take your time, I'd rather have a working issue 2 months from now. Rather than a broken one tomorrow. Some of us are wondering on beta and if the goal is even before the end of year. I prefer not to start any new projects till i13 hits, but running outta stuff to do

Actually, Slashman, customizing the appearance of the Boss IS one of the planned features for the Mission Architect, but they've said it's a stretch goal to get it into initial release. Since they've talked about the architect "taking on a life of its own" I'm guessing that the stretch goals won't happen in the initial release. But it is going to happen.

My guess of down the line is either I14 or maybe even I13.1. Remember, they say they're using these tools too. So this sort of customization would be something they want as much as we do.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course that means months...possibly 3 or more with an incomplete editor.

My point was/is that you make the tools you want to use internally FIRST and complete and THEN release them to the public. That's effectively what developer released modding tools are. Customization options are even more important if you're doing it for an MMO than any other game because in most games where player modders don't have the resources they want to do a specific thing...they then either create them or get them from elsewhere and import them into the game. This is impossible to do in an MMO. In my opinion its one of the reasons why when it was tried before (Saga of Ryzom), it didn't pan out.

If you're going to revamp your own internal mission creation tools and add most options and objective types in missions etc. Then I think it would make sense to release a large chunk of content done with the new tools that blows people's socks off and say 'Here! This is the kind of thing you can do with what we've given you! Take it and run with it!'

I'm just not seeing how this fits in with the flow of an MMO.
