Automan?

EDIT: Too slow.

[/ QUOTE ]

Automan was awesome, what was that little flying thing around him called, "cue"? And wasn't I luv Lucy's son the average dude in it. Tv at it's best.

[/ QUOTE ]

Automan's sidekick was called Cursor. And yes it was Desi Arnez, Jr. who played the programmer and police officer Walter Nebcher(sp?) who "created" Automan. Man I loved that show. T'was Tron come to TV.

While we're derailing, anyone remember that pilot scott bakula was in where he turned into half/man half/robot. That had potential.

I love in Posi's letter how he talks about 'rewards' for the missions created by the users. How it was bantered back and forth in the office with raised voices. I have a nagging suspicion this means no xp/influence/etc for these missions in which case. Crappy system and count me out. Not gonna bust my butt to create tons of missions that grant absolutely no reward.

[/ QUOTE ]

Then you missed the entire point of the mission creator.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh I got the point. I got it a long time ago. This is a great way for the devs to have the players create content for them so that they don't have to. We already provide free Q&A services when we Beta test the issues. Now they want us to be quasi-content creators. Then if were lucky enough to be sprinkled with the blessings of 'Devs Choice' then our mission will give rewards. Great.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, you've missed the point entirely.

It's often said that MMO's have pen-n-paper games as their ancestor. There's one playstyle of those old p-n-p games that has never really been supported well in MMO's- the GM. In any pnp game group, there's at least one. Depending on your group size, that might be 1 in 4 or 1 in 10, but that's still a large market to tap into.

1) A market that LIKES telling stories, creating things, and sharing them. Something they can only find in limited ways in other places, meaning CoH can carve out an appealing little niche for them.

2) Almost every pnp GM I knew was also leader/organizer of the community. You often played what he wanted around his schedule. He's also the type to gravitate into organizer/leader positions in online games. If HE wants to check out this game to experiment on this, he's more likely to influence others to do so also.

And... despite there being plenty of pnp GM's out there making their own content, those game developers kept cranking out modules for people that wanted something professionally done....

If this is done right, this won't mean the develo

I got exited when I read this announcement. It sounds like the mission creator is not going to be just a radio mission generator, but hopefully something much cooler. That I am exited about, I've written story arc and TF outlines before, it would rock to be able to implement them. As far as farmable missions go, if somebody made one called "Old MacDonald's behemoth farm", I would just laugh. No skin off of my teeth. And if some little child wants to make a mission filled with some of the same nasties that I've seen in petitionable bios, Oh well. File a petition and go on. I'm sure the rating system will also help discourage that kind of foolishness.

I'm curious about the day job system as well. It sounds interesting, and I look forward to seeing what it will entail. It sounds similar to the WoW xp bonus, which applies when your character's been logged out for a bit. Only instead of XP, you get other bonuses.

The TF rewards system sounds interesting too- I imagine rare recipes will still have decent selling prices, because one would hope it would take a fair number of tokens to purchase them.
I'm curious about the purchasable costume parts- will they be the same ones as in the invention system, or will there be new ones added to the TF rewards list? If it's the latter, I'm okay with that, as long as they're not level restricted like the roman armour.

Shields sounds like an interesting set, I'm not squeeing for joy like I did when DB came out (I had wanted DB since I started playing), but it sounds pretty cool. Sword-and-buckler fighter, anyone? I suspect that the villainous empathy might involve lots of stealing life from your enemies and using it to buff your friends- I'll be interested to see what it entails. Pain Domination? Sounds fun. Off to whip up a dominatrix character

And of course I'm always exited to see new costume sets added. The cyborg pack sounds cool, can't wait to see the teaser pics.
And of course, there's going to be more stuff in addition to the upgrade pack, hopefully waist capes will be included with that. My night widow needs the arachnos buttcape, and my other characters would kill for the option to suspend their regular capes from their waists instead of their shoulders.

Overall, this sounds like it's gonna be a sweet update!

On the screenshot for the Mission Creator (found at ParagonWiki); the implication is that we would only be able to place one enemy group per mission (ie. ONLY Malta OR KoA; not Malta AND KoAs).

If this is the case... could you please expand that a bit (if possible) before we get to wrangle with it.

Thanks.

On the subject of Patron Pools... it's cool that we get to respec into and out of them but it would be nice if it came with a package consisting of Heroes getting 'Patrons' as well while Villains would receive 'Ancillaries'.

Plus a little more info on how the Patron Pool respec would work (like having to complete the Patron arc of the pool that you wanted to respec into, etc.) would probably elicit a bit more feedback.

New powersets are always welcome but i think other powers are needed not just the melee power sets.

[/ QUOTE ]

I hate to be rude, but that really irked me. We're talking about tankers and scrappers... the two sets with the fewest number of powersets since launch, and that didn't get any new sets for the first 10 issues (3.5 years) of the game?

Nothing wrong with them finally getting some love throughout all of 2008. Whatever your favorite non-melee AT is, it's already gotten more love than scrappers and especially tanks over the years. And I'm sure it'll get more sets proliferated next year. Let the melee-ers enjoy their year in the spotlight.

Tokens

I worked long hours to get my alts the way I want them.. Put the effort into my passion and I reap the rewards.

I REALLY HOPE the token system doesnt poopoo on all the work I put into my alts.

The reason I say this, is I got the impression.. with a few tokens people can just buy whatever I might have paid 45 million for..

Not everyone in the game has the time to deal with the mess that the auctionhouse has become. I would bet concern for the casuals' experiance with this will matter more to them at this point.

Does this include changing the power's color? Sorry if you already anwer this qustion

That would require a LOT more work than what'd go into just a normal issue. A whole new game engine. This is something that's been discussed hundreds of times before already.

[/ QUOTE ] Oh, but they did it with some of the NPCs. Like Sister, Infernal, and Synsnape speed, and we can have red enegry and elec powers . Oh I don't remeber his name but he has black decoys. I saw all 4 on the Menden Silo's TF . Oh there the other guy that use the energy punches and it is blue! :O And we can change the color of our weapons.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right. If you read that post, it's clear that a new game engine wouldn't lead to power customization. Power customization would require a retooling of the ENTIRE GAME, which encompasses "the engine, the hardocoded systems, the soft coded scripts, and the overall design decisions that those things were originally built around."

IOW, if we ever do get power customization, it'll take a lot MORE than "just" retooling the game engine.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually from what I understood, it wouldn't involve the engine very much, if at all, but instead would be a massive, fundamental reworking of how the powers system itself works.

[/ QUOTE ]

*blink*

"a massive, fundamental reworking" of the power system in CoX would essentially mean rebuilding the game's engine. Massive means big. Fundamental means core, in this context. You'd have to make big core changes to the game, which means you're building a new engine.

So you two are basically arguing over semantics. Maybe the end result would look the same, but "under the hood" to a coder dude, it'd look like the same chassis with a new souped up engine inside it, and would probably cost twice as much to do as it would if they just started from scratch.

Hence that Other Game Which I Shall Not Name Here by That Other Company I Also Won't Mention For Fear of Banhammerishness. =) If you want power personalization? Don't look for it here.

I hope merits are granted fr story arcs as well. That would be great! Help get some people wanting to to those mssions on pugs instead of radio missions, as radio mission have all the temp powers that the cool kids want.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Well, we weren't really arguing at all. We were both pretty much in agreement that the game engine has nothing to do with power customization, as stated by BaB in the post that I linked to. With you saying that you'd have to rebuild the engine to get power customization, I'm guessing you didn't actually read his post since BaB says that rebuilding or upgrading the engine wouldn't have anything to do with power customization.

Again, "game engine" does NOT = "all the various systems that make up the game."

Man where should i start??? What are the devs doing? Stalkers get yet another powerset in i13??? OMG and villians get Pain Domiantion??? Aren't they already dominating with widows in pvp??? When are the Heroes gonna get something thats really good? First thing that I think needs to happen in i13 is improving the PB and Ws,you know to make things fair and balanced remember that??? How about pistols for blasters? How about another good damage set for scrappers,Fire melee is great, and 1 more nice set wouldn't hurt.Tanks could use a new good set as well, since brutes have fury, and more powersets than tanks.Man you guys keep giving the villians stuff every issue and keep the heroes behind on the goods.I hope you guys got some more nice stuff to announce, cause right now it looks like a disappointing issue.

[/ QUOTE ]

... Yer kidding, Right? All these years people have been moaning about Vside getting hosed, and now you're complaining when it actually gets the goods?

[Stares. In amazement and disbelief.]

[/ QUOTE ]

I have to admit that Shields for stalkers does seem a bit misplaced. What do you need with a shield if your main defense is stealth?

[/ QUOTE ]

What do you do with a shield? Throw it at your enemy and knock him down!

[/ QUOTE ]

No no no! Don't you get it!

It's a CLOAKING SHIELD

Think people!

*holds shield on head and patrol-walks away*

[/ QUOTE ]

it has been my experiance that stalkers often end up fighting. sure their main defence is stealth; but they have to fight quite often.

The pain domination power set is for DOMINATORS AND MASTERMINDS ONLY!!!!

Unless one of those ATs has been redesignated as a VEAT; no VEATS will get Pain Domination.

LOOK AT THE ANNOUNCEMENT, PEOPLE.

sheesh

Posted

If they ever do the "Secret Identity" thing with CoH, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with that. All of my CoH characters have public identities. Since the game's backstory requires that all capes must register with the government, I fail to see what can possibly be "secret" about any hero's identity, in a city filled with heroes.

This day job idea is nice, but again, for most if not all my toons, being a superhero IS their day job. I imagine when not saving the world, they go home and veg on a couch in front of the TV.

I just had a terrible thought. What if the allowable mobs in your mission are restricted to the gladiators your toon has collected?

[/ QUOTE ]

That would mean you'd have to log in to a particular character before you could invent a mission. Granted, this is all speculation at this point, but the mission creation tool will probably be made available from the opening screen, after you log in and before you pick a server.

Why do I say that? These missions will not be server specific. If you make a mission, anyone who plays the game, regardless of server, will have access. Currently with the trading system, if someone puts up an enhancement for sale from say, the Triumph server, anyone in any other server will be able to see it almost in real time. I suspect a similar procedure will take place regarding missions. When you finish a mission, everyone in all the servers will see it show up on a list at about the same time, and will be able to start trying it out, regardless of which server you usually frequent.

So our mission design parameters won't be restricted to one particular toon, and therefore the Devs won't be able to limit our mission design to the badge list one of your toons develops. At least, that's my current hypothesis. Without more info, we're grabbing at straws currently.
