Discussion: Purchasable Character Respecs

Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement.

City of Heroes has expanded their suite of available purchasable services to include Character Respecs (short for Respecifications). Over the course of leveling up, there are many powers that a character can choose from. A Character Respec allows the character to re-select their powers from their chosen primary and secondary powers, along with any other pools of powers they have access to. To be clear, this optional purchasable Respec does not allow the primary or secondary powerset to be reselected; it functions like existing respecs currently available in game.

Optional Character Respecs are available via the in-game store found at the character select screen for the per transaction price of $9.99 USD.

There are already multiple in-game methods that players can obtain a Respec. Now, if the convenience of purchasing a Respec is desired, it is available. Having a purchasable option has been an often heard desire from the game's customers.

Once players purchase a Respec, they must then visit a Respec Contact in-game to use it, in the same manner as the in-game obtainable respecs are done. The Respec Contacts include: Jack Wolf in Galaxy City and Arbiter Lupin in Nerva.

Hmm... don't think I'll ever have any use for it. But yay for more options.

Disappointing.. Another step towards CoX developing a "Cash Shop" that developes more have and have nots.

Very disappointing to say the least.

Might explain the ridiculously low drop rate of respec recipes. I've yet to see one.

This. But I think I'll be buying a respec recipe from the market before I need to make use of this

Props to adding more options tho

I say "yay" for more options. I'll never use it but hey why not.

Yes. More is options better, but is the demand that high?

CoX already has the "have and have nots." just take a look at the market forums. this is a good step in my opinion. it allows the "casual" (and i use the term loosely) player to just drop a couple bucks to get a respec, instead of playing the market for a couple of hours or so. it's more options, and i welcome our new financial overlords.

While there have been many times that I have wished that there were a purchasable method to respec my characters that would have been with IN GAME money, not real dollars. Nope, no thank you - I wont be buying any of these...

*note - yes I am aware that I could buy a respec recipe from the market. Since the respec recipe has become available I have seen exactly two of these drop.

Is buying levels, or badges next?

In what sense?

A buyable Respec? We've had that for a while already: the Respec recipe that's already in-game. It's just that there's now yet another route to get one.

... that's not any of the three Trials.

... that's not any of the many, Many, MANY Freespecs they've handed out.

So far, the Devs have been only putting knickknacks in the Store. I fully believe they'll continue the trend and save anything actually, y'know, good for the vast majority of the populace.

So to your disappointment, I say, Cheer up.

I can't imagine that I'll ever have the need for this personally, but hey, more options is always nice. And if it brings in some additional cash flow to help with development, so much the better.

No, what CoX has <in the markets> are the "know and know nots" or the "willing to invest time and effort and the unwilling to invest time and effort". If you are a 'have not' in the market - the fault is not your stars Horatio, but within yourself.

I think it's a good idea. I just had a discussion about respecs with my brother who recently restarted his sub. new players dont have the several vet specs available to many of the readers of this forum, and it is nice that the option is available. Long gone are the days where terribly unsatisfactory builds have to suffer through until they can run the respec trial in the 20's.

on a side note, please move lupin to a lower lvl friendly zone. A lvl 1 character can run and see the hero contact. Yes I know, why would you need to, but the degree of seperation between the ease of use with hero vs villain on this is pretty extreme. Can we get Lupin moved to port oakes or something?

before anyone brings up the "the people with money will be able to buy everything in the game while those without will be left behind," just know that the people with money were already doing this sort of thing with other websites.

and i highly highly doubt they will ever sell badges or levels. don't go to such a extreme to show your displeasure in the game offering services to help it's players have a more enjoyable experience. some people can't do a 2 hour trial, or don't have the know how to play the market to get enough influence to get a respec recipe. it's a good thing to have.

I say yay. More options is a good thing. They give us TONS of opportunities to respec anyway, and this is just one more choice.

why would you do that though. why pay 2/3rds of a monthly fee for something you could earn the cash for in less than a week? (less than a day if you want to)

I understand why they'll make this option available but still, why do this when you can earn it easily in the game?

Aren't there better things to develop than yet another cash vacuum? Respecs are a dime a dozen these days, and charging ten bucks for them is more than a little ridiculous. I doubt I'd even pay ten bucks to have my pri/sec rechosen.

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

As of right now I own 459M Infamy, after market fees, worth of Respec Recipes. I will let you know how much these are worth in two weeks.

I like this move a lot. However, it butchered my schemes.

Posted

It's good to have another option but ultimately disappointing. People have been requesting buying respecs with In Game influence/imfamy not real money.

I just hope that the current methods of gaining respecs don't get diminished somehow.

Suggestions (in case anyone is listening):

- Allow us to purchase these in-game options through the website

- Allow us to do character transfers between accounts (I have 4 and would love to shuffle them up).

- Allow us to purchase in-game things like transfers, renames, etc with in-game currency.

Given that any character I start comes with about four vet respecs, its not personally useful for me, and charging $10 seems a bit steep for something you can earn for free in the game three times per character, get awarded for free, or buy on the market.

Worst Case Scenario: No more free respecs when wide-sweeping game changes are made.

I kind of doubt they'd do something that lame, but I suppose its an issue that should be raised.

Wow. I honestly never thought I'd see this.

Yet I cannot see a problem with it. $10 is enough to keep it from being casually used, yet if you've got a character so badly "gimped" that you cannot wait for a respec from another source, you have the option.

I know that I have a couple of toons that I shelved until I got my 9 month badge (and the I12 freespec, which came out about the same time). If this had been available, I think I probably would have bought one.

Questions about the mechanics:

Do you choose which character it's applied to at the time of purchase? Or do you purchase it, then log into a character and give it to that character?

Can it be applied to a character, and then that character copied to the test server multiple times to test different build options?

Posted

Woah, hang on... Will this translate to unlimited respecs on the Test Server (you can 'buy' them but its not wired up to the billing system so they are free)?

If so, that should make some people very happy.
