Inventions has been touted as something that shelved level 50's can partake in. Level 50's that have completed all their story arcs already. Please, how can both of those occur? Level 50's can not experience IO's if they are locked out of acheiving specific rewards because they happened to hit the level cap before I9.
Doc, can we get a little clarification on "what parts" you are referring to that are only dropped by Story Arcs, Trials and Task Forces?
Are the "Parts of a set" each a different, exclusive part in the story arcs, trials and task/strike forces?
Still here, even after all this time!

Now I hear you guys... you all seem to dislike the Story Arc aspect of this system. I've had some discussions with the team yesterday about what we could do instead, and still keep the flavor of the four pool system, because having the extra three pools allows us to not only reward risk/reward, but time/reward as well. Takes longer to do a Task Force? Here's a nice bonus you can't get anywhere else. Finish the Respec trial, but already have all your Respecs? Here's a nice reward that carries with it some good inherent value.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ack now I'm all paranoid because I primarily do story arcs and not TFs or Trials. And it sounds like I won't have a chance to get the rarer recipes that you where originally going to offer me. Ack...
DOOOM! ok got that out of my system.

Yeah I'm starting to see there just is no way they can make it so that the system pleases everyone. Some do only tfs. Some do only story arcs. Some do neither and just run newspapers and other people missions (/e raises hand).

From what I understood, if a set is a 5 piece set, you can get something like enough recipes for 4 of those sets by beating stuff up, but the recipe fo the fifth piece might be harder.
This would allow people to collect pieces of the set rather easily (thus getting some of the bonuses), but completing the set much trickier.
Of course, if a set of five have recipe #4 only obtainable through story arcs, and recipe #5 only obtainable through TFs, then thing might get ugly.

WHY STORY ARC EXCLUSIVES ARE BROKEN:
Because they are the ONLY thing you can't repeat. The only. Think about everything else on the list posted by Dr. Brainstorm:
TF - Any character 12+ can do Positron's TF (if a hero, obviously) ANY TIME THEY WANT.
Trials - Any one 24+ can do a respec trial ANY TIME THEY WANT.
Killing mobs of all levels - With exemplar you can do this ANY TIME YOU WANT.
You might need a team, that's OK. But story arcs can only be done once. Fix that or no recipes be available only from story arcs. All you're going to accomplish is creating:
ULTRA RARE LOOT
Which goes against everything you said you wanted to accomplish. It will make the game more hardcore than WoW or Everquest II.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

* The majority of sets are available exclusively through defeating enemies. This means that all the pieces of the set are attainable by beating up things.
* These same sets also might have a part of them that require you to finish a Task Force.

These three things are GREAT! Definitely keep these things!

This thing is a really, very terrible idea. Get rid of this thing! Why not roll over those parts into Trials and TFs, giving us the ability to earn everything in this list in two other ways. The specialness of the SA rewards will still be good -- Wow I just got a drop I could only otherwise get from a long TF!!! But nobody is ever left out -- Hey, look, I got this shiny thing from a respec trial!

Are Pool A sets weaker?
Are TF / Trials required to get the better loot?
Ack no EG I don't do TFs or Trials, but I do as many story arcs as I can before out leveling them. Your saying I can't get any of the rarer recipes?

Especially if this is intended as something for 50's to do. I know that on my 50, I don't have any story arcs left. I can't go back and get any that I missed either. Unless you guys are going to implement flashback, take the arcs off the table please.

Or give us an infinitly reapeatable system in which anyone can go back and do an arc. Granted you'd only get prestige and/or inf for doing the missions in the arc, but you'd at least have a shot at the recepie for being part of the arc MC.
this is the only fair way I can see doing this.
As coding retroactive recepie reward granting might be too time consuming, and everyone (who wants it) and their mama has been asking for a flashback system for a while.

I dont have a problem for the most part with what you are saying, except Im still with most about the whole some you can only get from story arcs. Ive already done all the story arcs for COH and COV and play this game primarily to pvp when their is pvp to be had. When you say rare and unfortunately you say all the costumes pieces and whatnot are available without story arcs, then to me your saying the more powerful sets the ones which the pvpers will want to outfit their toons with those are the ones which willbe the ones story arcs are needed. The majority of pvpers hate the grind as is, since its all stuff weve done ten fold/nothing new is being added except the States tf. Just give in a bit and make them rewards for TFs or trials. Get rid of this story arc aspect, is doing an 8 hour shard tf not enough to be able to get any one of the rarer drops.

And I would argue that NONE of the sets should be this way. As it unfairly punishes 50s, for whom Inventions was mentioned as a way to improve without raising the lvl cap.

Much better system but think there should be a very small chance for to get stuff from other pools. Something like
Doing Pool A stuff 97% of the time you get Pool A; 1% from Pool B; 1% from Pool C; 1% from Pool D
Doing Pool B stuff 97% of the time you get Pool B; 1% from Pool A; 1% from Pool C; 1% from Pool D
Doing Pool C stuff 97% of the time you get Pool C; 1% from Pool A; 1% from Pool B; 1% from Pool D
Doing Pool D stuff 97% of the time you get Pool D; 1% from Pool A; 1% from Pool B; 1% from Pool C
This way you could always have a small chance to get something without having you "Must do X to get Y'.

Speculation:
-Will a recipe from one pool transition to a different pool at a higher level?
-Will recipes from lower levels become "obsolete" (but not useless), with equal or strictly superior equivalents becomming available at higher levels?
Unrelated:
-My contact Jenny Firkins (level 30-34, heroside) was indicated as having access to Invention Enhancements when introduced. Having completed her arc and filled the contact meter, there are no Invention Enhancements for sale in her store at this time (no surprise, really). What sort of Invention Enhancements can we expect to purchase from our contacts, and will there be an "Invention Store" where basic Inventions can be bought?
Yeah, it's the fact that storyarcs are one-time-only that makes that aspect less palatable to me.
Honestly I'd be fine with it if I could re-do storyarcs. Not even go back and do missed ones, but just be allowed to re-run ones that I have the souvinir for (some of them were FUN, and I don't have the time to level an alt from 1-50 just to re-do 'em once ). But that's going a bit off-tangent.
As EvilGeko said, a key issue is that storyarcs are the one and only thing that cannot be repeated.

Ok, I've read the majority of that monster thread I created titled "Drops".
Remember, if you kill that thread, it won't drop a recipe.
So here are some clarifications:
* The majority of sets are available exclusively through defeating enemies. This means that all the pieces of the set are attainable by beating up things.
* Some of the sets (the rarer ones), have parts of them that are only attainable by completing a Story Arc.
* These same sets also might have a part of them that require you to finish a Task Force.
* These same sets also might have a part of them that requires you to complete a Trial.
* This makes 4 pools from which recipe rewards can come from. Pool A is enemies, Pool B is Story Arcs, Pool C is Task Forces, and Pool D is Trials.
* There are different pools every 5 levels, to conicide with the recipes that are available at those levels.
* Not every level has all four pools (early levels don't have Pool D, the Trial pool)
* No specific anything is tied to doing anything specific. This means that completing ANY story arc in the level 20 to 25 range can get you a random rare recipe from Pool B. Defeating ANY entity (no matter if its a minion or a boss) can get you a random recipe from Pool A. This is done this way to ensure a more even distribution of recipes from that Pool. If defeating Archvillains always dropped a Rare, then someone would pull the old "farming AV" trick and suddenly that Rare is more common than Generic Damage Enhancements.
* Giant Monsters don't drop recipes so they are not farmed for recipes, causing camping issues we are actively trying to avoid. As for reasons to fight Giant Monsters... well the Hive and the Abyss now contain very good reasons to defeat these guys.
Now again, I must stress, the majority of sets, including entire complete sets come from simply defeating enemies. All the costume piece and temp power recipes come from defeating enemies. There are Rare recipes (ones that have a worse chance to drop than others) in Pool A (the defeating enemies pool) as well.
We also will be actively monitoring datamining on every aspect of this system through all of Training Room and into Live.
