Did you know that character names used to be restricted to 15 characters. This was changed around the time CoV came out. It's now 20 characters.

Did you know....

front loaded missions used to exist? These were missions in which the toughest enemies were near the door, and the weaker ones deeper in, ending in larger groups of -1 and -2 enemies. They provided a nice variation to missions structures, and a lot of fun in mowing down weak minions.

People complained about the lower xp for the -1 and -2 foes, and so the missions were scrapped.

Hooray for xp......

There are still a few 'back-loaded' missions. "Unlucky Pete", a Lost mission, is one of the ones I most clearly remember. You always see greens when you walk in the door, and are fighting yellows by the time you reach Mr. Pete.

Still, there used to be more variation in mission levels, and I miss that too.

Atta is another backloaded mission, although I seem to recall that it used to have greater variation than it does now. Of course, by the time you get to the end of the miss, you've probably levelled at least once anyway.

The big problem with front-loaded missions was that a lot of teams, especially in the lower levels, could not kill the frontloaded parts. A similiar example that still exists is the Positron TF, where the first two missions are arguably the toughest of the whole TF, and I would argue most teams (or at least a sizable proportion of them) that start the Positron TF do not even get past those first two missions.

(I'm especially amused when I see a team of lvl 10 or 11 heroes gathered by Positron. Once just out of curiosity, I followed them to their first misison, then headed to the nearest hospital. Sure enough, there they were! )

During the early months of the Game there was a bug that spawned a 5th cloumn bad guy as a Desk. The Desk would yell NPC comments and attack and run etc.

I couldnt fight it, I just kept laughing.

Did you know the original Pocket D still exists?
I have a Spine/Dark Scrapper on Victory who's still there.

Did you know...

That GMs didn't used to be police bots? They used to have a pretty standard costume, but due to people trying to pass themselves off as GMs they switched to being police bots.

Did you know there used to be a bug where you could create a totally invisible character?

The only thing that woiuld show was the small circular shadow your normal character would create and any text bubbles.

The origninal server in Beta was called "Prime" which rolled over in to Live as "Freedom". Which is why I think it is still the most popular/busy server.

...that Smartfilter (at least at my job) will block you access to the City of Villains site, but not the City of Heroes site?

At my job, it's the opposite. I can get to the villains site, but the only thing I can access on the hero end is the forums...

Also, for those unaware, capes were not part of the game in beta or at release. They first came around in issue 2. Auras too -- but they were in issue 3.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not sure if someone's already corrected this, since I'm only about halfway through reading the thread... but auras came out in issue 2 with the capes, did they not?

Did you know... that respecification was not always an option in the game? The Terra Volta trial was added in Issue 2. Originally powers and slotting were permanent choices that could not be changed, which meant a mistake in a build was there for life and that patches had much more serious ramifications.

[/ QUOTE ]

I may be late (so this might have been said already), but the original strategy guide (published before release) mentioned that the Terra Volta trial would allow you to change your powers. And if, as someone else said, it was based on a design document, then respecs were in all along.

[ QUOTE ]
(Question) Didn't you use to be able to die from falling damage?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think so. If you read in the original strategy guide, there is a discussion (sort of a two-page sidebar) with the word "bungeeeeee", that talks about using recall friend to yank a teammate who has jumped from a tall building back up to the top. One of the poster in it mentions that if you don't make, they will be on the ground with 1 hp in the middle of a bunch of mobs.

Also, there is an Astoria neighborhood in Queens, and an Astoria city in Oregon. Both got their names from John Jacob Astor. Perhaps he visited Rhode Island...er....Paragon City as well...

Er, they may have been planned, but respecs were not in the game until I2, that's a fact.

A lot of the stuff that you see listed in the Prima guide were not in the game at release. There were no TFs and no trials. Most of these were added later.

I disagree. As players, we see the live versions of the game. And the test version, but that wasn't in the game initially, either (added to test I1). If the developers are still ironing out bugs, we can't play it. And if we can't play it, it's effectively not in the game.

....Some of us are pretty miffed that we couldn't register accounts for CoH until several months after release as we lived outwith the USA/Canada, and can't get the Hallowe'en event badges, yet people who had the privilege of being here at the start think they are somehow entitled to get Isolator.

[/ QUOTE ]

What? participated in the beta, got mowed down by Rikti in the Invasion, heck theres even a video with my hero in it(Souji) and a stranged wrongly conned rikti Monkey.

Maybe there was a locational problem, but the release sure wasn't limited to USA/Canada.

edit: OK, late it with that one, nm.......

Did you know that.............

Kinetic Defenders 'Siphon speed' couldn't be stacked and didn't improve recharge rates, also had a longer animation and was usually skipped.

Speaking of the Rikti Monkey, the first invasion group on the Pinnacle server was conned friendly, we had to wait a while for some non-friendly Rikti to come down.

Hutchinson Park is named for Anne Hutchinson who left Mass for religious freedom in Rhode Island.

The Gaspee was a British ship burned in Rhode Island during the revolutionary war.

The Blackstone Hills are named for the Blackstone River which flows into Providence (the capital ) Rhode Island.

[/ QUOTE ]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Paragon City located in Rhode Island? This is something I heard/learned only recently after wondering for a long time.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is correct. In fact...

Did you know... Paragon City is actually an alternate universe Providence, RI?

[/ QUOTE ]

Really? Look at this map of Rhode Island. I'd always assumed that Paragon was actually a sister city south of Providence, ala Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. Paragon is basically North and South Kingston, and Jamestown. Jamestown = Talos Island, the island with Nag Pond north of that is Peregrine Island. I think it's ironic that Dark Astoria would be Newport (lol).

Does that mean that Mercy Island = Block Island?

Actually, one of the biggest problems was, the toughest baddies, often +1s or even up to +2s depending on team size, would spawn RIGHT in the front room. You're the first to zone into the warehouse, and there to greet you are a bunch of oranges with a red LT or two and maybe a purple boss. By the time you finished loading in, you were dead. Followed one by one by each of your companions as you frantically typed into group chat "DON'T COME IN!!"

This was a real problem in the early days, actually. The issue was not simply front-loading, but having a full team spawn in a room where people were loading into the zone, and having them die before they finished the load screen bar... that was a major issue. It happened a LOT, in beta and right after launch.

They still do as long as the mob you saved them from wasn't greyed out and you got zero xp/inf from planting said mob. Otherwise you still get inf from the street folks you save.

Did you know......

That after months of waiting, some people leaving, hundreds more saying that they were going to and countless others who were patient Issue 7 was released on the test server on May 1st at somewhere around 5:45 EST.

Also a very few minutes later the server crashed because of a coding error. Our great devs promptly fixed the problem and we were able to continue our testing of many new features.

Did you know:

Initially, at some point, apparently, the big maximum security prison in Paragon City was to be named "The Brick." It is from this that the zone "Brickstown" got it's name (which makes little sense now that the prison is called "The Zig").

Last I knew, there is still a mission in which the contact refers to the prison as "The Brick."

There are many stories of GMs appearing in unusual guises.

Did you know... there was a GM who always appeared as a PINK policebot. I forget her name but she was said to appear as a beautiful PINK Bot.

Did you know... a GM appeared once as Countess Crey. According to the story I heard, a player used the Countess Crey name or some variety of it and didn't want to change it. The GM appeared as the genuine Countess Crey to deal with the issue.

The most likely story of unusual appearances was...

All the signature heroes left their respective pedestals and appeared in Atlas Park to honor the recently deceased Christopher Reeve. They all lined up and briefly saluted the real life Hero.

It would be a nice tribute to add an NPC called Christopher Reeve or something similar to the game (with the family's permission of course).
