The Harsh Reality of PVP
Yay, another post with the word "e-peen" in it! That always elevates a discussion.
And this concludes our section of "Examples of trash talk you can expect in PvP."
Hehe. Ok, I can take out e-peen.
Just seems to be a lot of taunting going on in here for very little reason. Lots of opinions presented as facts and a lot of people pointing out errors in others' posts that they themselves are making.
Is it too late at night for anything productive to come of this?

That and it's just way too geeky.

You may not realize this... but you are on an internet message board for a comic-book-superhero MMORPG. That sentence alone goes off the scale of the Geek-o-meter, much less the actuality of the situation. The geekiness of a Star Trek reference pales in comparison to the geekiness of where we're at. Especially when the reference given lacked such particular geekiness as giving the Bird of Prey a more specific designation such as K'tinga class or D-8 or some such.

You should not get caught up in the emotion of victory or defeat. You may be thinking, "How is it possible to not celebrate victory or mourn defeat?". You can, but don't let the opponents know it. If you openly boast, you will be alpha-target number one. If you openly cry foul, you will be alpha-target number one. Never say anything to the opponent in local chat, private chat, or global chat; especially, global chat. Resist the temptation to do so. If you have a fit of rage, count to ten, go get a drink of water, or just go watch some television. Never say anything to the opponents, ever.

The Harsh Reality of PVP
Are you thinking about taking your favorite hero or villain and enter a Player versus Player (PVP) zone to see what it is like? If yes, then there are a few things you should be prepared for when you enter PVP combat. I will first attempt to tell you what to expect. Then, I will attempt to give you some suggestions how to counter what you learned to expect. The thing I will not do is tell you how you must play. You play the way you want to.
The most important thing to expect in PVP is that there will be many times you will be defeated without any possible way to defend yourself. You may be thinking, "What? How is that possible? How can I be defeated without any way to defend myself? That does not sound fair!". PVP is not fair! That is exactly what you should expect when entering a PVP zone. Do not think PVP is fair. If you do not learn anything at all from reading this, then please remember this one thing: PVP is not fair!
Now, that you know what to expect, let me tell you ways to lower the amount of times you will be defeated without any possible way to defend yourself. But, keep in mind, that you will still be defeated without any possible way to defend yourself. Why? Because PVP is not fair! Hopefully, I have stressed that enough. So, what do you do to survive?
You should have on you at all times some Break Free inspirations. You may be thinking, "But, I have status-effect (mez) protection. I never get mezzed! Well, maybe once to about a dozen Malta throwing stun grenades at the same time. And, maybe once to some Carnies (Carnival of Shadows), but those were flukes". No, those were not flukes. Those were indications that mez protection is not total protection. It is a magnitude of protection that can be overcome when more than one mez hits you at one time. These mezzes stack with each other, each building more magnitude, and will eventually over-come the magnitude of protection you have. In PVP, you will be mezzed. Everybody gets mezzed. Carrying Break Free inspirations will help you when you are mezzed. If you remember nothing else from this section, remember this: In PVP, you will be mezzed.
You should have with you at all times some teammates. You may be thinking, "But, I like playing solo. I can solo invincible missions. I do not want to always team up with others. Pick up groups (PUGs) are usually horrible". What if my friends are not on?". It does not matter what you can do solo in PVE, PVP is not fair! You will be attacked by every opponent that sees you, whether you are alone or with a team. You must expect that. So, if you decide to go it solo, remember this, you will be attacked by many opponents at the same time. Therefore, you will be defeated without any possible way to defend yourself. When your inspirations run out, so does your health points. You can go it alone, but you will be defeated. In PVP, you will be attacked by multiple opponents, simultaneously.
You should stay close to your teammates. You may be thinking, "But, if someone kites us (kite: ranged attacker steps into range, fires, and steps out of range), we have to close in on their position." All of you must close on their position. Any separation of the group will cause some individuals to be at a great disadvantage. Opponents prey on weakness. If a group is scattered in all directions, they are easier to defeat. In PVP, you need to stick together with your teammates.
You should know that the Archetypes (ATs) with the lowest amount of hit points are the easiest targets. You may be thinking, "I wish I was not so squishy (low hit points)". Any non-melee oriented AT will be considered the easier target. The non-melee oriented ATs are the easiest to defeat, but are also the largest threat when grouped. If you are one of these ATs you will be targeted first. The non-melee oriented ATs have very little, if any, mez protection. In PVP, non-melee ATs (squishies) are targeted first.
You should know that you will be attacked by opponents you cannot see, some of which can defeat you before you will even realize you are being attacked. You may be thinking, "How can that be? How can I defend against that?". Well, the good news is, that perception (the ability to see stealthy/cloaked/invisible opponents) at it's maximum is 10 feet higher than negative perception (-perception) is at it's maximum. The bad news is, that it is easier for an individual to reach a -perception value higher than any +perception another individual can achieve. In other words, you alone will not be able to see them. That is another reason why going it alone is not a good idea. To enable you to see -perception opponents, you will need things that give you +perception. If you want to know more about perception, click here-> perception. In PVP, you will be attacked by opponents you cannot see.
If you have a fit of rage, count to ten, go get a drink of water, or just go watch some television. Never say anything to the opponents, ever.
In summary, PVP is not fair! You will be mezzed. You will be attacked by multiple opponents, simultaneously. You need to stick together with your teammates. Non-melee ATs (squishies) are targeted first. You will be attacked by opponents you cannot see. Never say anything to the opponents, ever.

Actually, I have such a predjudice against abusive Stalkers, I take it out on all Stalkers. Which, is not polite. I will be playing my Ice/Ice Blaster or my Controllers in Siren's Call, and even if I am one shot away from defeating a Villain, if I see a Stalker suddenly appear somewhere on the playing field, I go right for them and leave the other to get away if they can

I have very limited PvP experience. A few times, being the Arena when it first came out. Pretty fun given it was a controlled environment.
Bloody Bay was my next PvP experience. I wanted to see what the place was all about and saw "Ooooh. Meteors? Mission? I'm there." While I was doing my mission, some Stalker 'uncloaked' beside me and tried to take me down. Unfortunately for him, my controller (who was only PvE spec'd) turned out to be more than a match for him. I had him chain-held for quite a bit too. Nearly arrested the bugger till he SJ'd away from me. Blasted Fly not fast enough to catch up...
Ah well, when it strikes my fancy again I may try to get that temp power in Bloody Bay once more.

More Harsh Reality
As it currently stands, your ability to be successful in PvP depends almost completely on your initial choice at the character creation screen. You may be an extremely skilled PvE gamer who knows the ins and outs of your AT and many others, yet sadly this skill falls by the wayside all too often. At times you will be apoplectically angry and curse the game for not allowing your specific AT/Powerset to be successful while seeing another completely dominating the zone. Take a time out and get a glass of chocolate milk. If you take anything from this section let it be: Your ability to be successful in PvP rests very highly upon what AT/Powersets you chose at the character creation screen, not personal skill.

I think this is the most important point. If you still don't understand why you are fighting stalkers and brutes 95% of the time in Hero vs. Villain PVP Zones, read through this point again. If you didn't play CoV you would think it only has two archetypes.

Dude, if you're as good in PvP as you are on the boards, you're scary
PvP experience:
#1: "Hmm, these people are all shooting each other. Maybe I'll snipe that one, he's at low health. AHH, someone random mezzed me..." ran away.
#2: "Let's bait those stalkers, tell me if you see one about to kill me." *assassinate* "You newb! Why didn't you warn me!?" "Uh... I didn't see him either?" kicked from team
#3: "Wow, the enemies at this meteor are sure burning through my health fast... oh, one of them's a scrapper." ran away
#4: "ARGH, siphon speed ran out, I'll just drain from one of these mobs..." *held by random passerby* *mobs kill me*
#5: "I'm going to finish this patrol mission if it kills me" *assassin strike, die*
#6: "[censored] it, I'm just going to kill the next person I see." Long battle against a brute involving many many siphon speeds, but I can't do any damage to him at all, eventually he runs away.
#7: "Okay, four stalkers camping the edge of the safe zone in warburg. I'll teleport in, lay down a tar patch, and when the stalkers fail to assassinate me I'll blast them!" Worked like a charm, except that none of my attacks could hit, so he just ran away.
PvP would suck a lot less if you didn't need a completely different build to even compete. An efficient PvE build is 100% useless for PvP, because you don't have the acc to hit ANYONE.
I don't know what they were thinking reducing accuracy against other players... all it does is create a huge gap between PvP-enabled builds and everyone else.
so basically yur sayin if yur a squishy yer screwed?
i actually agree, vilains luv to kil squishies den run like women snipein dere high heel shoes at u til u fall den hidein some more.
I'm a CoV player only (EBGames didn't have CoH when I was in the mood to grab a new game, so I work for the dark side), and my primary's a flying Brute -- SS/Inv, just because I was in the mood to play a Superman/Captain Marvel sorta guy. I spend almost all my time in PvE, and the vast majority of that time is spent solo'ing (especially with this character, Shadow Paragon). I tried to make a guy that can move around on his own, is fairly tough on his own, and can deal out some damage on his own. I'm still no expert -- I've got a few secondaries up to 8th or 10th level -- but this guy, he's still pretty solid, I think.
So, as a level 20 Brute with cool black tights and a dead sexy new cape, I was feeling pretty tough, pretty strong, pretty good about myself -- so I thought I'd go see what's what.
My first encounter with heroes? One was -- really -- a big blue guy with a red S on his chest. A flying Tanker, no less. I punched him a few times, he punched me a few times, it all felt very visceral and exciting. Two super strong guys, dukin' it out! This is just like in the comics! This is just what I made my guy to do! This was --woah! Fight interrupted, NPCs! The both of us had plenty of knockback goin' on, and I ended up Aerial Superiority'ing him right out of the sky and into the middle of a horrible, monstrous, street gang. He's level 25 (but hurtin'), I'm level 20 (and terrified), all these gangers are 25th level. I frantically fly away as he's face-planted by some random thug with a shiv or something. A buddy of his comes flying in just a bit too late to help out, and I'm flying just a bit too fast for him to kill me.
But right up 'till then, it was really cool.
Since then, I've still had fun there, a little bit. I'm 22nd level now, and all the mobs still have a few levels on me. I take patrol missions, swoop from phone booth to phone booth, and the whole thing just has an aura of "danger" to it that's missing in the normal PvE environment. You never know when some pesky hero is gonna come flying outta nowhere and kick your butt the way only another player character can, y'know?
No one forces me to go there. I haven't changed my build on account of my visits. I stock up on Inspirations before making the trip, but I don't buy anything I don't normally try to keep on-hand anyways. It's no big deal, really. It just adds a different feel to the game, and I can go back to PvE whenever I want to. No fuss, no muss.
That's a really nice recount of your experiences, and a good outlook to boot Critias. I tend to handle things much the same way. I play a bit, I PvP a bit, I do what I feel like doing.
"Null is as much an argument "for removing the cottage rule" as the moon being round is for buying tennis shoes." -Memphis Bill
Just as an aside, about that whole Galaxy Class/Bird of Prey thing? As someone almost completely unfamiliar with Star Trek(Other than knowing that James Doohan was an alumni of my high school), I was able to figure out the following:
1) Galaxy Class Starship is probably pretty big. A galaxy is pretty big.
2) A bird of prey is like a hawk or something.
Okay, so it's like a hawk out searching for something and suddenly -*WHAM*-. He gets hit by an orbital laser. Then, I hear that the Bird of Prey is some other ship later in the thread.
I liked my version better.
So, we've got a Trekkie, expert on sociology, declarator of obscure knowledge, a ginormous e-peen inflated from three decades of gaming, and a well meaning OP in this thread.
Since no one has an opinion and just all these provable facts to throw around, I was wondering if one of you could let me know if Coke or Pepsi is better.
