The Harsh Reality of PVP

PvP and the arena are good additions to this game. It brought more options for fun.
[/ QUOTE ]
Such as the "option" of the 30 second Phase Shift... oh wait, that's not an option, it's being forced on the rest of us. And it certainly isn't fun. Tramples on concepts, for sure, but fun?

Yes, because Post-Pet controllers and Masterminds wouldn't be overpowered in PvE if they could never be harmed yet still do incredible amounts of damage. Get over it.
Interesting guide Buffy.

Yes, because Personal Force Field doesn't accomplish the same thing in PvE and isn't still in a Secondary that can be picked by Controllers and Masterminds.
You know why PFF wasn't nerfed? Because it's pretty trivial to get a hit through it in PvP.
[ QUOTE ]
It is pretty obvious to anyone who has played this type of game that the "team based PVP" talk is just a cover-up from a refusal to take the time to balance things.
For those of you who "team vs team", how often have you been involved with PVP that had teams that were evenly matched in terms of numbers and make-up of ATs? [In the pvp zones, not the arena] And compare those times to the number of times when the teams were not even in terms of numbers/AT-types.
Which event occurs more often in a pvp zone? "team vs team" or team vs 2-3 guys? Or 1 on 1?

I'm guessing that would depend on whether or not both hands were full of cheetos at the time.

Yup. And it doesn't necessarily require picking up two other powers you may not want or need to get it, either.
Besides which, if that were truly the problem with Phase Shift, there are better ways to take care of it. Such as making targetted click powers like pets, Ice Patch, etc. phase with the character or simply shut off when the character phases. This would certainly lend a smidge more strategic usefulness to offensive phasing powers as well.

Look at every war in the history of this world... How many were "fair"?
Look at every sporting event in the history of this world. How many were "fair"?
That's right, damn near all of them.
Now, which does a GAME resemble most, a sporting event or a war?
You don't get through this world with honor, you do what you have to to survive.
This viewpoint is what's wrong with society.
Yes, this is just a game, but it's a valid analogy because you know what? This game that we're playing involves characters(people) and battlegrounds where they have confrontations(wars).
It is an invalid analogy because it is still a game, and fairness is an essential part of the definition of a game. PvP in muds is a waste of time because, as Buffy opened this with, PvP is not fair, nor can it made to be fair (because even if all classes and abilities were perfectly balanced, the players would still unbalance the game by ganging up on smaller forces).
Oh yes, also, please stop going into PvP by yourself and coming here to rip your hair out.
I went into PvP by myself, with my AR/Dev Blaster (held to be one of the weakest combinations in the game). I did just fine, thanks. I batted way over .500 and better than half my defeats came from being droned. I could have done even better if I'd been SS jousting with EM powers like all the no-skill monkeys, but I don't need an FOTM build to win.
Never make the mistake of assuming that people who don't want PvP in the game are incapable of it. The odds are that I've been gaming since before you were born. (If you're under 32, you lose.) I want PvP in muds driven from the face of the earth because it's a wasted effort on the part of the players and developers. All the time CoX's devs spent in the Sisyphian task of trying to balance PvP could have been spent bringing us more PvE content, or on new power sets, or getting Coralax or Incarnates into the game. Instead it was squandered on fanservice for the emotionally immature.
I think it was best put by the devs of another game that I will not mention:
"The fantasy literature and mythology that inspired fantasy based RPGs contains conflict, combat and warfare and its part of what made these worlds so dramatic, the characters so heroic, and the endings so rewarding."
What part of that does not speak truth?
None of it. It's just not relevant.
You've all been watered down with these PvE oriented games to the point that there are rarily anymore ruthless, cut-throat people with BALLS.
That's because all the real ruthless cutthroats are out in the business world, screwing friend and foe alike for a buck. They don't have time for games.
I'm sure that all the majority of these posts are doing is reinforcing prejudice thoughts of PvP and scaring newcomers away.
I'm sure your posts are doing exactly that: presenting the entirely accurate image of PvPers as people who care nothing about fair play or sportsmanship and care only about winning by any means necessary. Who wants to game with people like that?

The problem is it still has characters vs other characters and ever since I started D&D way back in 1980, I have never seen any good come from this. I gave PvP a try in these games anyway, since I was hoping it might have more of a point and less of the attitude that some of the people I played with way back then had, but it's actually worse since there is no GM to intervene.
[/ QUOTE ]
I understand that competition may not be your cup of tea, and I respect that. Or, you may only like your competition in controlled circumestances. However, I can say that unlike you I have seen buckets of good come from it, and enjoyed it.
On a tangent, why do so many here worry about the attitudes of the competition? Who cares what a bunch of pixels say? There are numerous tools in the game to ignore people - if you find they are getting under your skin, tune them out and just play in peace.
There's an old trick to public speaking about imagining your audience in their underwear. A related one in-game is to imagine your opposition as a bunch of children. It's really hard to get annoyed because children are teasing you.

Pure logic. Pure gold. Bravo.
That's not to say that I haven't PvPed with honorable folk. I have. I enjoyed it thoroughly. But they are the exception, and not the norm.
Be well, people of CoH.
Sporting events are rigged all the time from college basketball, to boxing, to football to anything else that's bet on in Vegas.
The fact that someone cheated does not change the fact that the events in question were originally set up to be fair, insofar as mortal man can provide.
Rather, cheating reinforces the initial fairness: the cheater sought an unfair advantage because the contest was not weighted in his favor.
In any case, when it's discovered a sporting event was rigged, those responsible aren't rewarded for their ingenuity. They usually get to see the inside of a jail cell.

I have 1 thing to say.
Yes PvP is somewhat unfair but if you are a lone stalker in a PvP zone and a team of 8 heroes sees you just walking by....well they usually jump and kill you in about 5 seconds.Yet everyone complains about stalkers doing anything of the sort to them
That's kind of like a wolf complaining that eight well-armed sheep shot him on sight.

I find that friendly chatter after a good fight is enjoyable so long as your opponent isn't one of those Ipwnedjoomom types. 'GG' is always appropriate after a good fight, so as to leave no hard feelings.

The few times I've ventured into PvP zones (badgehunting) I find that so long as I don't say anything it lessens the chance I'll even be noticed. You even accidently type something to broadcast or local chatter? They hone in on you like SHARKS SMELLING BLOOD.

Only if you have some unreasonable dislike of Star Trek. Without the cloaking device and ability to sneak attack, a Bird of Prey is no match for a Galaxy Class starship - let alone eight of them. Furthermore, those Federation bastiches are constantly finding ways to detect the Bird of Prey despite its cloaking device. This places it in much the same position as the Stalker versus eight heroes, making it a highly analagous situation.

The analogy sucks because it requires obscure knowledge to comprehend. I've seen plenty of Star Trek stuff in my day and I only had a vague idea of what you were talking about.
That and it's just way too geeky.
Some people just aren't very observant. Im pretty much an anti-trekky, but I, like probably the majority of people under 60 in the U.S., have seen at least 2 of the Star Trek movies. That's all it should take to recognize that a 'bird of prey' is one of those Klingon stealthing crafts.

Oh, well since you're obviously an expert on the majority of people, you must surely be right. Guess I'm just an idiot. Thanks for clearing that up.
This is a very accurate guide but you forgot one thing:
In PvP you will be ridiculed, insulted, and otherwise subject to trash-talking. Obviously, the best way to counter that is to turn off chat for the opposing side or just close your chat window altogether.
