Well most people I know the issue isn't that I play a MMO, it is the monthly cost from their perspective, they always ask well how can you justify paying each month.

To this arguement I explain that I use to buy lots of games usually about $40 to $60/month minimum.

I don't do that anymore I pay my $20 (Canadian) per month to play COH so in essence I save at the very least $240 per year.

I love playing this game, but I often get strange reactions from people when I tell them I play MMO's. How do you guys justify/explain playing the game/use of the game?

I get this a lot from my in-laws.

I don't try to explain it. I just say that I enjoy it, and then ask how it is different from sitting on the couch watching TV...

I used to be of the opinion that MMO's were like buying an arcade machine and not putting it on free play and dumping quarters into it everytime you wanted to play, but the truth is that I'm such a voracious gamer that 24$ cdn is a whole lot cheaper than three or four games a month at 59.99.

Tell them it is your entertainment. Compare the fact that going to a movie with a date ($20-$40, depending on concession stand usage) for 3 hours is roughly the same amount you pay for 20+ hours of entertainment a month.

And if that doesn't work, put them on /ignore.

Well thats not really fair. Going on a date can have a much bigger "payoff". But any who...... I do what the hell I want to do. You dont have to justify your actions to anyone. Go on a date, make that person yours, then get them to play CoX with you.

I think it's meant figuratively as the person you would be /ignoring would be someone who doesn't understand MMO's and likely doesn't play them. It's a joke.

I agree on the pricing, and also would like to add that it is a good alternative alot of the crap being floated on TV nowdays. Sure, there are a few good shows, but even those are abused with massive repeats mid-season. So that is another angle.

Other than to my wife ... I never justify anything I think or do to anyone ... She's also a gamer that more or less thinks very much like I do on most matters (there are some exceptions of course), so uh ...

Unless the person actually means anything to you ... I'd say ... There's no need to justify your existence.

My first thought was, "Oh I wish we could do this in real life" -- put people on /ignore that is.

Then I thought, "The government would immediately collapse, because all politicians would end up on everyone's /ignore list." LOL.

Well first question is, do the know what an MMO is? Do these same people play any computer games? Do they play any console games?

Most people I know haven't a clue what an MMO is and what it is about. They also never understood how I could spend hours playing other computer games before my precious (CoH).

The only thing I ever have to justify is that I play CoH, because all my friends play Guild Wars... I used to, but I switched and am never looking back! Although I do dust off the old Necro every now and then.

Reasons I have used:

<ul type="square"> [*]Because I am 40 years old and can do what I want [*]Because my mommy and daddy have blocked all the pron sites [*]Because I don't have to feed it and drive it home afterwards [*]After a long day at work, I don't feel like going out at night. This is a great social outlet. [*]It's less expensive than crack and cheap hookers [*]It doesn't give me a hangover [*]Because, unlike the couch potato that you have become, I am actually exercising my mind [*](My sister's favorite reason) I get to kill farting monkeys
Feel free to use any of those.

My feelings exactly. The kids are well fed, new clothes, doing well in school... My husband games with me. Nobody else has a say regarding my free time. Sure, my parents can nag at me, but I can counter with their little hobbies. Mom plays bingo... way too much.

All the cool kids are doing it! Isn't that the age old explanation?

Actually, explain to whom?

<ul type="square">[*]My mother hogged the console games growing up and always had the high score. To this day, she plays all sorts of games and much better than I do. We tried to interest her in CoH, but superheroes and storylines are not her thing. She likes arcade and puzzle games and things with a score.[*]My father loves his computer casino games and asks me longingly if anyone has recreated Lucky's Casino Adventure yet.[*]My husband, sister and my three best friends play, so there is no explaining. The real challenge is in shutting us up.[*]My aunt upon learning how her nieces spend many evenings turned to her children and scolded them because they don't play online games with their siblings.[*]Most of our other friends have been exposed to gamers for so long that it becomes normal.[*]We enjoy it so much we'll occasionally bring in a laptop and show the curious what it is all about. Most of them would love to play computer games if only they could afford a decent computer and high speed internet.
Anyhow, if you follow your hobbies for long enough, people understand it is your thing and love you for being passionate.

When someone hasn't had first-hand experience with something, they only thing they have to base their judgement on is you. Chances are, if you are finding that you have to justify your game playing to people, you are telling them you play games as if it's some sort of admission, and you are self-conscious about the perceived geekiness of gaming. Stop that!

When somebody asks you what you did last night, you say confidently "Playing Heroes." When they ask what that is, say "It's an on-line video game" matter-of-factly. And when they say, "Oh, are you one of those weirdos that get addicted to your computer and crawls around in sewer tunnels with plastic swords and commits suicide when their character dies?", feel free to treat them as if they just told you the world was flat and the moon is made of cheese.

If you treat it like it's nothing to be ashamed of and is a normal, healthy thing to do, most others will to.
