I love playing this game, but I often get strange reactions from people when I tell them I play MMO's. How do you guys justify/explain playing the game/use of the game?

I don't have to justify anything. If they don't like it, they can go pound salt.

Yeah...going with this one.

I don't. If they don't understand why I play an MMO, they never will. I don't bother wasting my time trying to win them over.

You pay for your entertainment. Some people pay for a gazillion channels of cable television, some people pay tons of movies each month for movies, some people buy clothes for the sake of it. You pay for a video game. It's the same thing, really, just some short-sighted people can't seem to grasp that playing video games is no different than watching television, except more fun.

Yeah, that's pretty much it for me, too. I guess I could say I have to for business reasons, but the truth is I just really dig the game. No other reason necessary (at least not to the people with whom I care to associate).

Well, if they don't just say "OK" with "It's fun," ask them how much they paid for the last movie - goodies and all.

Bet that 1 1/2-2 hours was more htan $15....

I spend 80$ a month for 5mbit Cable modem and my 2 accounts. that will keep me entertained for the whole month.

they will spend that in a night at the bar. or double that. Who's the winner?

I don't explain it. My family makes fun of it. Damned shoulder Kittens and Fire imps. I hear about it every family gathering.

My fiance likes it in that she knows where I am. i'm not at the bar, or the strippers, talking to girls or what have you. She knows i'm inthe comptuer room, playing a game with friends.

It's no weirded then when in the decades past, grown adults get together to play cards, or go bowling, or do crafts together. it's the same thing. A hobby with friends.

So...you haven't shown her where the strippers hang out in Paragon yet, I take it?

Well, justification isn't necessary, as playing MMORPGs is a hobby like any other. Why do people watch sporting events or go to movies?

I don't feel the need to justify anything to anyone. My husband and I play when we can, our kids are fed and clean clothes and more toys than the mall. I don't have to justify my free time.

Just tell them it's a video game. Most people are satisfied with that answer since video games are becoming more mainstream. Explaining the whole FPS vs. RPG vs. MMO vs. MMORPG etc., yadda, yadda is totally unnecessary.

I get some odd looks when I tell people that I'm playing a MMOG.

This is mainly due to the whole subscription thing, paying money every month in addition to the initial game cost. I can't really reason that away with "but it's saving me money on games I don't need to buy for entertainment", since I don't buy a lot of games anyway. (Also, these people tend to be the sort who don't really see the point in paying for games, when they could pirate them for free.)

In the end, I usually just tell them that I enjoy it, and it's my money and I'll spend it how I like. This has the unfortunate effect of making them attempt to convince me every single time the subject comes up that I'm wasting my money, and here's how to get some real games, entirely free, don't worry about legality...

My friends are great people, but with some holes in their morals, I think.

Same answer I give when people on the forums question how I choose to play the game: None of your business.

The degree of abruptness in the answer depends on my relationship with the querent.

Those are Carnies, Troy. And besides, it's easy to justify why we hang around them all the time. They're criminals who like it rough! Er- need to be roughed up!

Yeah, someone gives me crap about playing something I enjoy, there's a pretty good chance what they say doesn't mean diddly to me. I'm gonna guess you're a young folk. If someone is giving you a hard time about gaming, don't let it get to ya. Good chance they're never going to understand.

My opinion.

Ahhh... how I love giving my opinion.

Today's lesson is on the outgrowth of lemons in the solitude of your mind.

I feel the best thing to do is to once a aday spring out of the box and jump around like a madman for at least ten minutes. They might try to stop you but if you threaten to bite the first one that comes near they should hold back long enough to give you the time to finish before the tranq gun arrives and nap time ensues.

That's the best time to then use a nonstandard dictionary to learn a new language, perhaps Nonlackonian or something. Just make up the words, it's not like you're ever going to be sane enough for a passport, but you can dream.

I don't think people dream enough. Sometimes I dream of giant towels looming over the landscape and taking over all aspects of military spending, which frightens me no end since I have no real need for a dishwasher at this point in me life. I mean, where would it go? Oh I suppose I could move the kitchen outside and put in a double extension onto the porch, but then what? Where will the dogs graze? Where will the cattle roam? Where will the prarie dogs eat the vegetables of my hated neighbors the evil stonemasons of Qu'tar?

I also think that the color f'dag is really overlooked in today's society. What shall we do with the leftovers, we can't put them in the dishwasher, WE DON'T BLOODY HAVE ONE, DO WE?!

I though as much, you insensitve [censord]. putting things before us and taking all the stuff we won in the auction and selling it to the communists! Well I'll have you know there's one thing you can't take away from me, and that's 'cause it's tattooted right onto me.... OH NO! IT'S GONE!

DAMN YOU FINGLERSNATCHER AMERICANUS! DAMN YOU TO THAT OTHER PLACE! You know, where it snows and the cows are all backwards and strange-like.

Des Moines, I think..

People tend to ask me "Have you beaten it yet?" and get very confused when I give them the answer of "you don't beat it, you just keep playing."

Posted

I still find it amusing how some people don't understand the monthly fee, or actively appose it... without really realising exactly what you get for you money... such a new content... the servers being hosted... etc etc...

I dont think i've ever gotten a strange reaction out of people when I tell them I play a MMO. Then again I've been playing Video games for the better part of 20 years.

People might think i'm strange if I start picking up other hobbies other than gaming
