This touches on why I am very disappointed with the AT for now. It's not a lack of damage or 'extras' so much - its that the core mechanics (AS/Hide/Placate) are extremely clunky, slow and comparatively ineffective/inefficient in the game as it exists today.

I think it Spines was ported it would be balanced. Castle said it was overpowered...but to me I think Spines is a tough set to stick with. I think if you actually make it to 50 you should receive an award b/c the early levels are brutally slow paced. I think that reason alone keeps many at bay and it's one reason you don't see a zillion Spines scrappers running around everywhere. Most don't make it past lvl 20.

To be honest though spines is amazing but I've seen other sets kill much faster than spines.
Yes, it is the case. We aren't talking about a decision made yesterday; they decided years ago not to port Spines explicitly because of -recharge. Obviously with the new Fury mechanics Spines would be more viable, so if they ever get around to looking at it again we may get the port.

For most common power questions, you are more likely to get valid input from players who actually took and use, or tried, a power by asking in a server global channel, your Supergroup members, or your coalition members.
No disagreement that the forums represent a small percentage of players and (several different) skewed viewpoints with (occasional) inaccurate info (which is typically corrected by others at length).

But do you really think a global channel will have a larger subsection of the player base? Or fewer skewed views/inaccurate info? The forums are, by far, a better source of info than random questions on in-game channels (not that you can't use both).
  4. I view my SS/DA brute as the 'take it anywhere' character. Doesn't matter what enemies I'm facing, performance is consistent and very good. Invuln is tougher vs S/L, but cries vs Psi/Special. SR and SD will be awesome (softcapped) against anything that doesnt have good tohit buffs (and enemies that do will slaughter you). Etcetera.

Fair point, of course. But also one that isn't going to apply much. Building perfect attack chains isn't something most players do, in my experience. Forum-goers tend more towards min-maxing, but I still doubt it applies to most characters, even here.

    [Edit: clarity]
  8. Any attack worth using is already enhanced > 90% for damage
Most attacks aren't enhanced > 70% for end or rech

Right now Spiritual or Cardiac are the clear winners unless you are removing damage enhancements from your powers. In the long run, with 45% and 2/3 bypass, maybe damage would be viable... but the other two will probably still be better.
  9. Very (very) sorry to see you go. Good luck wherever you're headed next. Where is that, by the way?

Utter rubbish. The original designer wasn't planning for today's game. 'Shades have been impacted less by nerfs (from the GDF on) and benefited more from buffs and IOs. I'm not against a PB buff; I'm just suggesting you make sense.

DA has moderate resists, a smidgen of defense, a damage aura and a stoopid-good heal. Oh, and the mez auras that my brute mostly ignores. Invuln has godlike S/L res, defense that scales with mobs around you and an infrequent-click +HP/heal. Elec gets good resists, no defense, end mitigation, a damage aura and a reasonable click-heal.

Different mitigation leads to different playstyles and tactics. People who look at DA and see mez auras are missing the point; its a completely different way to play.

I also enjoy the more even performance curve. It may not have Invul's uberness vs. S/L, but it doesn't cringe away from Psi either. Herding Council or Carnies is pretty much the same (try that with Invul).

[Edit: Since you're interested, I'll point out: CoF synergizes extremely well with Rage]
  12. Long-time SS/DA brute player here, leveled mine to 50 pre-IOs. Stealth is a non-issue; jump in with Death Shroud running and FootStomp. They'll pay attention. The mez auras are great situational tools that you don't want to use most of the time. My most recent build doesn't have either. There's a few DA posts with my name on them floating around if you're looking for IO build ideas.

Considering that I've tanked Recluse on an STF for a few min when our silly Shield tank got killed an had to run back... I have to disagree.

No, not enough -tohit, and by the time you cast it you'd be dead anyway. Not to mention it's radius is going to be smaller than the buff radius.

Just make a target macro and kill the Quartz first. Or aggro from a distance - they summon the (location based) buff pets then run out of buff range to you.

It falls apart when you look at Stalkers though. They have lower than Scrapper survivability and also lower damage in the majority of situations, and this has been deemed WAI by Castle. So the argument that higher survivability should mean lower damage has been proven false.

I wasn't against the fury change at the time but looking back I don't think it was needed at all.
It falls apart when you look at Stalkers because they are broken. Castle never said WAI. He said:

The problems Stalkers have at this point are systemic, not specific to them. However, due to their intended playstyle, they are hit by these things in particularly harsh fashion.
    ....
In the past, I've addressed this to a degree by increasing their damage, adding additional critical avenues and even adding a Fear debuff to their Assassin Strike abilities. At this point, they are about as strong as we want to make them, which means any further improvements have to lie in addressing those systemic problems. Frankly, that means it is a LOT more complicated and manpower consuming.
Stalkers are still broken, but fixing them would require major game engine rework which Paragon doesn't have the resources for.

The character I most prefer to play for support is my Cold/Sonic, no contest. You are right that it is less popular (to play) than the other 'best' sets: lack of a self heal and the need to buff everyone regularly (or annoy your teammates by not taking/using the major buffs in your primary).

But Neuronia is right - Cold/Sonic gives teammates superb survivability while bringing stupid amounts of -res to every fight in addition to being packed with every other debuff you need for AVs.

  20. Clarification appreciated Castle. I can understand the manpower/time constraints given the issues involved... Still kinda disappointed. I won't be touching the AT unless/until those issues are addressed.
