Quote:Iv got a Cold/Ice Defender thats high level. So I might be able to answer your question where Tex doesnt really know.Cold Domination is a very powerful but late developing set. I have never actually seen a Plant/Cold Controller but the combo should work well. Stick with it. Once you get Heat Loss endurance more or less becomes taken for granted. If you're soloing you may struggle to keep your pet alive without a heal and weak-ish shields, but overall the combo should do great as a troller/debuffer. I don't see it as much of a farmer.
For concept, you consider some kind of arctic character who summons frozen vines and such (colored white).
Plant/Cold would be a excellent idea.I can solo 8 man missions with my Defender, and I used to have a Plant/Rad on my old account, so I know the particulars of Plant Control as well.
Plant/Cold is a good idea, if you can get over the hump till you get Sleet. The Sheilds by the way are more then enough to keep your Plant Pet alive to where he could be summoned again right after he dies, unless your using him as a Tank, then you will fail in keeping him alive. -
Quote:Defenders can be made to work it just takes more effort. Give us an idea of what you want to run and I can try and throw up a build for you.
Im going to be taking a Cold/Ice and Dark/Dark Defender into PvP soon, but im still curious on what the OP wants...or is he fishing for a build vicariously? -
Iv yet to spend a single dime on IOs for any of my Defenders, and they solo with ease. What makes soloing with a Defender so hard for most?
Im really curious. -
It tends to be alot easier when you appoach pvp with the understanding in mind that your going to be a target.
As for laughable?not at all.
Just think about the movie with Riddick in Pitch Black.Nothing around you, but you can hear them, and all the sudden 50 stalkers apear and eat you alive.
Welcome to PvP. -
Quote:Kinetic Melee, this'll be interesting....Not.Great suggestions here. I think I'll be implementing more than one of them.
Long, long ago (this is my second account, so don't be fooled by my forum registration date; I'll be hitting 4 years end of this month), the first character I got past 25 was indeed a FF/NRG defender. Deleted that one in favor of an NRG/NRG blaster (I lurves me some knockback as a mitigator!) which ended up being my first 50. Time to try that defender again.
I like the idea of a stalker starting out in Praetoria. Maybe Kinetic Melee will serve there.
As I mentioned before, I haven't actually tried the Stealth/Concealment pool. I will do so.
I will also look into a Stealth proc. I got Mids, so I'll play around.
I guess it's no real surprise that no one has done a Power Pool guide. Methinks that would be a lot of research-y type work.
Thanks, all, for all your suggestions! You've given me the basis for another 4-6 alts...you enablers, you!
/alt-itis whine
All I see now is Sheilds, Electric Melee, Dual Pistols, Empathy, Kinetics, and Demon Summoning.Lets add Kinetic Melee to the Pile of shiney new powers everyones going to be using.
The Devs might as well start Deleting older power sets due to lack of use. -

Quote:Under Tanker base damage if my eyes dotn decieve me.It has been stated more times than I can count that Ice armor and Ice Melee are NOT going to be proliferated to brutes. Ice's secondary effect is -recharge, and when the enemies can't attack you, you can't build fury very fast at all. And a brute with no fury is like a scrapper with tanker damage.
But for the topic, I myself am hoping for a ton of AV fights in GR. Although that's pretty much a given with Praetoria. =D -
Quote:Timebomb helped me by reducing actual fight duration. You could have a group in theory that you have an expected life expectancy of 15 secs but the group versus you could have a life expectancy of 20. You would take 20 secs in killing them but they would have 15 secs in killing you. Timebomb lets say would damage them without you being attacked and therefore lower their life expectancies. On its own not likely, but stacked with trip mines - likely. So it was never the worst ingame. The worst ingame is something far worse, probably a passive everyone skips.
Maybe im just on the wrong server to see it or something, but iv yet to meet a mid to high level Blaster that can wipe a mob in under 20 seconds.
Doesnt mean they dont exist, but if they did, people wouldnt make Fire/Kin Controllers and Elec/SD Scrappers to farm with vs a Blaster like that.
Also id like to address that Time Bomb isnt about DPS.In fact, the games not entirly geared towards DPS either way.The only time iv seen DPS or chains matter is in a AV fight. The rest of the time its a none issue.Tactics and how you use a power matter more then DPS.
Its nice to calculate stuff to see whats strongest if it was in a perfect world or setting, but thats hardly ever the case.Playing style effects a build far more then DPS does.
If DPS ruled CoX, then people would never play anything past Blasters and Brutes.Ever.However if you go along the lines of thinking your survivability means more then your DPS does.(People call me a Troll over this.....)
The thinking behind this is things like someone picking a Defender to solo with over a Blaster. Why?Because that Defender (When played by a decent to half skilled player atleast) can solo high number mobs and survive it vs that Blaster that face plants after killing half the mob on a solo run.
Iv yet to meet a Blaster that can solo what 1 of my Defenders can.Im sure somewhere a 2-6 billion dollar IO Blaster build can do it just as well as my Defenders, but thats 2-6 Billion I didnt have to spend to solo.
Time Bomb is not a bad power. Its just not favored by players much because most dont want to have to think while playing.DPS be damned, its the only Blaster set iv used that allowed me to solo 8 man missions. Most Blasters cant even say that without a IO build. -
Quote:Id have to say that Containment would make Dark Miasma too powerful on a Controller AT.Not to mention the massive amounts of -toHit it provides can really make a mess of things. While this seems to be a common thing as of late I'm curious about something. While powers left and right have been pass along to other ATs, is there ever the possibility of having Dark Miasma as a secondary for Controllers? I haven't been here long enough (both as a poster and player) to see any other topics on this subject.
I have a /dark MM and love it tremendously; the versatility of the powerset is just wonderful and I would love to have my resurrected hero-zombie running about with fiery imps!
Seriously though, why has this not happened? Is it a dev thing or are there other reasons? I hope it's a Soon(tm) rather than a never sort of thing!
I can solo on a +2/8 w/bosses difficulty with my level 39 Dark/Dark Defender. What hell do you think a Dark Miasma Controller would bring?
Handing a Controller another set like Traps would be too much control as well.
I have ran Sewers on a Ice/Cold Controller at level 4, from start to finish at lvl 12 before, and all I used was my Ice primary teir 1-3 powers. If I had Tar Patch and the Twighlights Grasp, and Spammed my Teir 1 and teir 3 AoE power. It would have been a even bigger joke then it was in the first place.Youd never need a team.
Id imagine just about any combonation of Dark Miasma Controller would be a bit too much.It really wouldnt matter what the Primary was.It would amp it up too much for a Controller. -
Make a Stalker if you want a Invisible being.

Quote:I personally think if your a dried up well, you should take a break from the game for a couple months, maybe longer....and I seem to have used up all of my creativity over the years, what little of it I originally even may have had. This is probably a silly request, and sounds more than a little lazy, but would anyone be kind enough to throw a few suggestions at me for a concept or costume? I've tried pestering my in-game buddies but their ideas are limited to "make a catgirl
" or "Wolverine 2 lolol xD".
Discounting VEATs/HEATs, this is probably the first time I've ever gotten the idea for a powerset combo I want to play, before getting an idea for a concept or costume first.
Addendum: Not to sound all wannabe-mature or anything, but I don't play comedy/joke characters. The novelty of a 'funny' concept wears off before level 10. Maybe I just lack a sense of humor.
Its not unheard of. -
Quote:Ahmen!Prove him wrong about what?
Anyone in this thread talking about powersets or IOs has already failed to prove him wrong. He didn't say it couldn't be done with 8 IO'd out soft-capped (or whatever) Stalkers. He said he probably wouldn't have the patience for an all-stalker MoSF done HIS way, which is picking any eight people who know how to play their character... not eight people who happen to have min/maxed their builds.
That said, I don't think I'd have the patience for a MoSF or TF just picking eight randoms (even if they all know what they are doing) from ANY AT or combination of ATs. There are many more combinations of ATs that will have great trouble with master runs than just the all-stalker team. All-stalker may just be the most obvious example.
Min/Max IO builds arent the norm.No matter what the forums here dictate about it, its more of a rareity in game.
Im half tempted to make a Stalker simply because I rarely even look at a IO.Havnt found the need for them yet on my builds. -
Thats the one thing thats always urked me about PvP in this game.
"Dont stand still, always move."
Iv seen people do it on Squishy ATs, and it rarely works to save there life.Unless of coarse the horde comming after them was half retarded or it was there first pvp day or something along those lines.
Reguardless of the PvP Rules in this game, iv only seen a few things survive a horde bash, or 1 on 1 rummble.I Activly beat the hell out of 3 Stalkers at once on a FA/SS Tanker in Siren's Call one day.(Burn only sucks if your a Stalker)
Iv seen other players with Damage Resistant builds cream people now days in PvP Zones. You wanna be a PvP/PvE character?Build a Spines/Elec Scrapper, or a FA/SS Tanker, or a Dark/DM Tanker.Theres alot of options. -
As a experianced AR/Dev Blaster and Traps/Rad soloist.Id have to say the power isnt as bad as everyone thinks it is.Or atleast its not bad for me.
Iv found it rather easy to buy up a single, cheap Stealth IO and put it in my Sprint and add it to my Cloaking Device's Stealth, and toss that lovingly lovey dovey Smoke Grenade and walk right in the middle of a spawn, plant it, and back up just far enough to spray everything with Full Auto when it goes off.
Not to mention the amazing fun you can have when Teamed with a Stone/** Tanker and it herds 3 or 4 mobs. -
Quote:Do things flee from Acid Mortar? I've never noticed it and cannot see mention of it on City of Data, I thought it was basically firing off Acid Arrows on a short recharge.
I havnt noticed anything running from my Acid Mortars either. Then again, Most things are typically dead shortly after they start getting nailed by it.
I tend to take every Secondary Blast power on my Defenders the moment they become available and slot them for the standard 3 SOs of Damage.
Alot of people down play the damage of a Defender, when its simply that player doesnt take as many attack powers as they can grab.Works pretty well.(I dont count Air Superiority as a attack power worth taking.) -
Mines sitting at level 42 right now, and id have to say its a nasty Tanker. It does very good damage. However your going to run into people that will tell you Mace or Fire melee is a better choice, or that Elec melee is better. In some ways yes, but for my playing style, keeping a mob on its butt while i rip through them is very fun for me.
By the way, Axe really tears Carnies, Vaz Zombies, and many more things a new one. They are very weak to Lethal Damage.
All in all, my SD/Axe Tanker can solo missions that would make a full PUG do a total team wipe.
Its also sitting on SOs, no IOs have been needed yet. -
Quote:All depends on your mode of thinking from what iv seen and experianced.Ok, so i just rolled a Dark/Dark fender and cor, and i want to know which is better. I know that Fenders get the buffs to the secondary effects, and they just recently got a damage boost, but is the damage output better than cors now?
help!
If you want a Damage Defender, go with Kin/Dark or Cold/Ice.
If you want a DeBuffing/Buffing Corr, play a Dark Miasma.
I make these types of suggjestions because while both ATs have a diffrent mode of Primary/Secondary Numbers and levels you gain powers. They still have the capacity to do both just fine.Provided you build for such things.
Even bofore the change to Defenders iv been able to solo 8 man mob missions with bosses with a Cold/Ice Defender.
Granted that not everyone knows the secrects to how to solo with Defenders, it makes it a topic of they lack damage.Which simply isnt that true. Now with the inherant changes to Defenders, my soloing will be far easier then before.
Theres only 2 Corrs ill play.Pain Secondary, which I havnt made one yet, and a Fire/Thermal Corr.Simply because Defenders dont get those sets. -
Quote:Traps is really interesting me to a point. I "think" that if I was to make one I would skip the last two powers though. I have a /Dev and either I set up mines, or I don't, it just isn't that important whether I use them or not.
That being said, we come to the sad. I just really don't like the Defender secondaries for the most part. I have started an Archery Blaster, so I'm not sure I want a weaker version of Archery to play with. Sonic, for me is cool the first few yells, and then not so much. AR is not going to happen. Energy is also about in the same boat as AR for me. Ice I'm not too sure about, it might be fun. Electric for me is probably a mix of Sonic and AR/EN, cool for a bit and also just not interested. Rad does interest me some, except X-ray is just such a weak animation to me, I'm not sure how long I could watch it. I am guessing that it is one of the better Rad blasts too.
So, what did everyone pair with Traps and how is it going?
I went with Traps/Rad.
Odd to pick Radiation Blasts I know, but its a good mix and does more damage with Traps them a few of the other Secondaries Defenders get.
I can solo on +1/8 w/Bosses at level 28.He is however sitting on the shelf for the moment.Due to life.
I also use Step Mine activly solo and in teams. Its very good damage when your in the middle of a mob.I almost never get interupted sitting next to a tank in a team. -
I have a Ice/Ice build, and iv taken my Icicles and skipped my taunt.
Then again, Ice Patch, Chilling Embrace, Frost, Icicles, Frozen Aura, and Energy Absorbtion more then soak up a fair share of agro.
I couldnt imagine not taking Icicles.Thats almost a crime agenst Ice Armor! -
Iv noticed something thats been a huge topical debate in mainly the Defender Forum. However it can apply here to the Controller Forum as well.
EMP players.Otherwise know as Empathy or Healers have been the main topic of these 2 Archtypes.
Everything from Defenders shouldnt have attacks, to Controllers shouldnt take Empathy, its just full of fail, to getting upset at the player who has Empathy when you die.
I personally have dodged this power set like the plague.Mainly because I dont want to be responsible to the wellfare of a entire team, when its not on my entire shoulders to begin with.
Iv seen other players blame a EMP for there dying, when that same player decides that the EMP is there personal 911 when they want to tank a 8 man team mission on there Blaster.I dont find that fun or within the bounds of common sense to blame the Empathy for there Stupidity.
I acctually like the Empathy Power Set, but iv avoided it until now.I would like to make a Empathy Controller, or Defender, I have yet to decide which id perfer. Its leaning towards Controller to be honest.
I want to aviod Ice Control, since I have a Ice/Cold build.Any recomendations? -
Quote:That by far is the most intellegent thing anyone has came back at me to say towards my veiws towards Mid's.Thank you soo much for not trying to plant insults agenst my veiw of Mid's.Mids' gives you all the information to account for what you're claiming people ignore. If they're ignoring it while using Mids' that's because they're ignoring it, not because they're using Mids'.
Also, plotting out IO builds to accomplish a specific goal without using Mids' gives me a headache. Doing it without pencil and paper or Excel or Notepad or something is nigh impossible.
Your the first to be up rep'd by me in all the years iv played.
Side Note : I dont and havent used IOs past KB proc's and Stealth Procs.I havnt found a need to improve apon perfection.SOs mainly do the job for me.
Thank You. -
Im surprised people still use Mids to build a character.
I had a interesting argument in game about the killing speed of Tanker EM and Ice Melee agenst 8 man mobs.
This guy swore up and down that a Tanker with EM could out damage and kill a mob faster then a Ice Melee Tanker....Because Mid's said EM is better DPS.
Not for AoE it isnt.
My advice.
Dont bother with Mid's, and dont bother when Pen and Paper. Its missleading because it doesnt take into acount everything. It only takes into acount simple math.Which if you cant do by veiwing the power set with your eyes, then maybe you do need Mid's.
Mid's doesnt account for weaknesses and strengths of your enemy.Nore does it account for your strengths and weaknesses agenst your enemies. Also doesnt account for the overall damage AoE can dish out to multipul targets vs a single target.
I get called a Troll for this, but whatever. -
Quote:Another thing to keep in mind is your power set combos on your Tankers. Some Tanker Armors as well as Melee sets can handle many diffrent things....well....Diffrently.Well, it was my difficulty setting after all. I so wish I had thought of that in game instead of wasting 2 or 3 hours of play. Oh well, you live and you learn.
Arachnos are a bit easier with Willpower or Electrical Armor sets.
Warriors hurt when they hit, Tanker or not.
If you have a Melee set like Super Strength, your chance of missing these groups, especially ones that -toHit is a none issue.
Some things can handle other things better.Learn what can be handled, and what cant for your tanker.Itll make things go alot smoother. -
Hi there.
Iv been looking around for some builds for a pvp character or 2.Iv taken my FA/Fire Tanker and my Elec/Elec Tanker to pvp zones.they did rather well, however they couldnt kill anything.
I couldnt seem to do enough damage to someone before they either got a assist, or escaped. However I did enjoy the power sets I was using for my Tankers.
Has anyone on this forum made a Fire/FA or Elec/Elec Scrapper and PvP with it?Im curious because they seem like good PvP ideas.
Anyone? -
I cant belive people are still replying to this post.
Its not based on any reality and its retarded.
