I need something to do before GR comes out and I can always use another tank. How is Shield/Axe ?? Ive never made an Axe tank. I have two shield toons so I have an idea of what to do there. Any advice ??

I've got a lvl 15 SD/Axe and I'm enjoying playing it so far. Seems like it will be a fun toon in the long run.

I like mine a lot. The damage feels pretty good when you're supplementing it with AAO from Shields. I found that the knockdown from Axe took a lot of the pressure off to soft-cap the Shields defense totals; I was doing just fine at 32-35% defense, even on large teams, and only bothered to soft-cap out of a sense of completeness.

So I feel like there's pretty good synergy between the two sets.

Mines sitting at level 42 right now, and id have to say its a nasty Tanker. It does very good damage. However your going to run into people that will tell you Mace or Fire melee is a better choice, or that Elec melee is better. In some ways yes, but for my playing style, keeping a mob on its butt while i rip through them is very fun for me.

By the way, Axe really tears Carnies, Vaz Zombies, and many more things a new one. They are very weak to Lethal Damage.

All in all, my SD/Axe Tanker can solo missions that would make a full PUG do a total team wipe.

Its also sitting on SOs, no IOs have been needed yet.

Don't have a Shield/Axe but I do have a Shield/Mace, which is fairly similar. There's a lot of mitigation in both secondaries, and Shield/Axe is even more consistent. There's also a lot of solid AoE in them. And combining Shield with a weapon set is very high concept.

SD/Axe is a good combo. I like mine quite a bit and it's a great conceptual fit. Doesn't take a ton to hit softcap to all 3 positions. In fact, I was surprised how close I was one day w/mostly cheap Multi Strike sets in my PBAoEs (+CJ + Weave + the Steadfast unique). Just needed 1 full sets each of Mako's & ToD and I was set by lvl 40-ish. Axe has some good mitigations too. The weak AoE will be offset (and then some!) by SC.

Leveling up, your damage will suck, but what lowbie tank damage doesn't suck?

Edit: More on synergy - Axe is lethal, SC is smashing. That's a bit of variety, but if I were purely playing for min/max'ing, I'd mix in some exotic damage. If you pick up, say, Fireball later, you're kinda set. Axe has a lot of KD's as mitigation, same w/SC. Downside is if you're facing KD-resistant foes. Mostly though, Shield & Axe go together conceptually, even better than Shield & Mace, IMO. Now if they'd only bring Broadswords to tanks...

As for AAO & Axe, well, AAO goes w/everything, but you'd least want to pair it w/something that's ST-centric like Dark, EM or Stone. Axe is pretty middling for AoE damage (behind Fire, ELM, SS, Ice, DB & Mace), but still has a decent cone in addition to WA (which is pretty gimp, actually), so you can still leverage AAO nicely.
