Music that makes you think of the City.

Music is one of them funny things that is universal yet everyone is so picky about it. Sometimes you'll find a great new track and play it while playing a game and it sort of becomes asscoeated with that activity. You find yourself thinking of the game when the track comes on in the car or when you hear a snippet of it in public.

At least that's how it is for me. How about you?

There was a red name that was asking Samuraiko to make a video to the tune of The Funeral by Band of Horses. Its a great track by a band I'd never heard of and I fell in love with it right away. It was a great way to channel away some of the feelings of loss on COH that I honestly wasn't even aware I had, or how deep they ran.

Point is that this thread is an excuse to link to music that makes you think of the City and what you have accomplished there. And if you feel like it tell us why.

I'll start with Ellie Goulding - In My City, which is another song that begs for a COH video. And I don't even think I have to numerate why this reminds me of COH. I'll do it any way though. I have a character that was a flyer. She was my only real flying character and I always made sure that she was at the fly speed cap (back before it was automatic) Im my mind she was capable of hypersonic speeds and space fligt. So many times when I was running a team late at night I was 1/2 asleep already I would be moving to the next mission and I'd zone out thinking of the acent into space and how weightless it would feel to move that fast and have the capability to move at that speed. Then I'd wake up and realize I'm running into the blue walls at the edge of the zone and am a mile from the mission again, and sheepishly tell the team that I was "OMW".

Darn it this is what I'm going to miss the most, these fits of imagination that run across my gaming experience so often in this game.

Well I'm done wasting your time with my terrible reminiscence writing. What music do you think goes hand in hand with this game?

I've always felt that Father Xmas was my in game turning of the tables to the Kinks song Father Christmas.

Unfortunately I don't have a broad knowledge/collection of music and the songs I do directly associate with the game, ones that don't have the word hero or Superman in it's lyrics, is due to their use in someone's CoH music video (Bring Me to Life for example from Desolate Joker's video).

I tend to go for orchestral stuff, but there are a couple pop songs I've wanted to use for CoH videos. These are the songs I associate most with CoH.

Pop:

Queen - Don't Stop Me Now -- I have a whole video scripted for this song, but I've never gotten around to it. Always thought there'd be time. But this is awesome fun, with terrific lyrics that can be illustrated perfectly with CoH.

Nazareth - Hair of the Dog -- When it's time for a beat down. Let them know they're messing with a son of a *****.

The Kink - He's Evil -- The Theme song for one of my gentlemen villains who likes to kiss you and kill you. Sometimes in that order.

The Greatest American Hero theme -- Call me square, but I love this song. Happy heroes, hooray!

...

Tank! (Cowboy Bebop theme) -- No other song gets me killed more often. I hear it and go straight into Scrapper Lock.

Immediate Music - An Uncommon Hero -- this is epic and sad while being heroic and hopeful, so it might be the song I'll be playing when the servers go dark.

Heroic Adventure:

Two Steps from Hell - Captain Universe -- I can't begin to tell you how much I love this song. It feels like the John Williams Superman theme but with a Flash Gordon vibe.

633 Squadron theme -- I feel like a soaring old-timey hero when this is playing.

Two Steps from Hell - Racketeers -- Very much in the Pirates of the Caribbean vibe.

Epic:

Two Steps from Hell - United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Two Steps from Hell -Ghost Brigades

Two Steps From Hell - Norwegian Pirate

A good number of songs make me recall City of Heroes(mainly Red side) due to the fact a few months after playing i turned in game sound off and just played music, so when i hear a song i use to listen too when playing i recall moments of when i started playing the game 4-5 years ago.

There's a song that reminds me of the time when i stared red side and was around lv10 in Port oaks jumping around finding things to beat up on at my level doing papers mostly solo since i was on at dead hours way back when i played on Pinnacle and before i joined one with a SG. I'm going to miss this game greatly and all the nice people on the forums.

I was solo back then for the fact i was not the nicest i could be back then when i was 16 or 17(started playing after i dropped out of school). City of Heroes/Villains thought me the basic things i need better then school if you ask me, my spelling got better over the years, grammar a tad better, learned to do a bit of math not long after the put in Real Numbers of the powers.

Thinking back i changed a lot and it's thanks to CoH/V and the nice people on the forums, when ever i try to ask anything on other forums they ether go "L2PN00B" or just make jokes till at least one(2 max) give me what i'm looking for. Now i don't even post on other forums (from Counsel games to MMOs) just for the fact it's just better to do research on what i need. While here i may get a joke or two about something but they always add in what i need to the post and so many are helpful.

Off Topic Rant! Feel free to skip.

I hope NCSoft crashes and burns for doing this, A Friend believes they killed CoH to try and promote GW2(As GW2 comes out, CoH/V gets the boot). I don't care for there reason it's just plain evil to shut down a game that's doing just fine, unlike other games out there we ADDED a extra server, not once in CoH/V history did i read a Server Merge happen.

Sorry if i got off topic a little but i need to vent that steam, one of my Favorite characters can't be made in other games at all. (Slayan, Half-Human/Demon with powers tied to his blood.) Due to that fact i'm starting a story for him since i can't play him might as well RP him in words at least.

/Rant!

Stay Super!

My musical knowledge is admittedly limited. But I listen to a decent bit of radio. That with songs I -do- know I like, and have liked, over the years have given me a good selection of songs that remind me of City.

I RP my characters, and I can't help hearing certain songs that remind me of them in various stages of their lives. It could be as simple as answering a call for help, or a song that reminds me of a troubling part of one of my character's lives at the moment, or even happy moments in a character's life. I can picture scenes in my head almost as clearly as if I'd witnessed them firsthand.

At least two pieces of music have always struck me as the perfect zone themes...

Ouroboros - Memory Gospel, Moby
Echo Dark Astoria - Boo, Pinback

Memory Gospel just fits the tranquil otherworldly atmosphere of Ouroboros so well, and as for Boo and foggy Dark Astoria, that song's given me goosebumps with its understated eeriness while roaming the ruined streets.

Speaking of which...

Dark Astoria - Suffocation, White Ring

Nothing understated here, but it fits perfectly for "new" Astoria, especially the distorted vocals and the way the beat slowly builds from industrial ambiance into almost a military march.

I have some character themes (well, more like some character playlists) as well, but I'll end with an accidental discovery made last night while finishing the last mission of Croatoa. This song worked as a surprisingly perfect soundtrack for defending the henge against the Red Caps and saving Salamanca, complete with fading out right as the last Red Cap dropped and the mission ended...

Saving Salamanca - The Pining Pt 2, Clark

Opus Bridge - The Contingency Plan

That song will *always* remind me of City of Heroes, because it was a song that was written about an SG in City of Heroes, and after getting to know the singer of the band, I started using it as my "sign off" song when i did some radio djing.

Oh Gods, where do I even begin...

Poets of the Fall's "Locking Up the Sun" was the theme song of our Justice-based supergroup, the Star Patrol.

(And the only song I can immediately remember that a redname wanted me to make a video for was Viridian's request for a video to Swedish House Mafia's "Save the World Tonight".)

Back in the day, I would mostly hunt hazard zones for the bigger spawns. The vibe always lent itself to a smattering of industrial. Hunting Freaks and listening to Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy, and thier ilk seemed as complementary as mac and cheese.

Maybe not original, but theme songs from superhero pop culture. When I'm playing my Dark/Dark scrapper, I often have the theme from Batman: The Animated Series going through my head. Similarly, the John Williams Superman movie theme as well as the Superman: The Animated Series theme also invoke CoH for me. Gonna miss this game. I tried CO and didn't even finish the tutorial... it just irritated me.

Blood of heroes by Megadeth for me. I used to get Xisha (a dj for a CoH radio station) to play it during a hamidon raid.

Walking stiff let me tell ya
Better left for dead
And now we are on a mission
Well its full speed ahead
My legions when we do the crime
Lets get one thing straight
To get there early is on time
And showing up on time is late

Ladies and gents, were still alive
By the skin of our teeth, now its killing
Angel in our pocket, devil by our side
We aint going nowhere cuz heroes never die

Still alive
Blood of heroes
Never die
They never die

Weve been run down every hill
Chased up all the dead end streets
But if you try to cut us out
Youll get a kick in the teeth

Ladies and gents were still alive
By the skin of our teeth, now its killing time
Fasten up your head belts,
Time to ride the skies
Its time to be immortal, cuz heroes never die

I made a toon that was a riff on Aluna Francis of the band AlunaGeorge. Her name was Double Sixxes after their song Double Sixes. If you like glitchy pop you'll love 'em. I predict them and Ellie as the next wave of brit pop in the US. Much better than some of our drivel. (1 direction is not included of course)
