Oh, They think they won...Heh. NOPE.
I sincerely hope "the gloves are off" means some earnest work is being done on a private server, because at this point hijacking Paragon city is the only choice.
Need a "we're going to steal the Declaration of Independence" style meme for this undertaking.
Get to it code people, you're our only hope!
I think if the original Paragon Studio devs were doing the reverse engineering work we would still have massive problems and it could take years.
It's over - really. Immediately I assume attacks will be sent my way for being honest but I don't really care. I just don't understand why people are setting themselves up to be hurt in the near future. I DO understand the majority love rooting for the underdog in most situations but regardless of what is written on the Titan Networks I just don't see anything but disappointment happening.

What we do from then on simply defines what we want and how much we're willing to do to attempt to influence things to make it happen.
Honestly, I'm not convinced that things are very different now than they were before their most recent announcement.
So, on August 31st, they told us they were shutting it down.
We rallied, we made noise, we spread the word, they gave us an email address and we continued and they publicly addressed our efforts and mentioned the selling of the game, the IP and the studio. While their mention included that they'd exhausted such efforts, I just think it is great that they made mention of what we were seeking in their public address.
The things that they said don't really come off as fully believable (having a special place in their hearts for the company they sent packing with zero notice in the middle of all of this great work they'd done and had in store for us, shutting things down and preventing further account adjustments, preventing the developers from being able to do a proper sendout... and they say they want it to end on a "high note"? Hah! And then, after all of this, we're supposed to believe that efforts of good faith were made to sell and keep the team, the game and the community alive? After only a few weeks? What sort of efforts were made? Were any even at all? Or did they exhaust those possibilities before even making any attempts?).
Now we have the doom criers out and the news outlets saying the same thing they said August 31st. It's done. It's over.
We made them take notice and they responded.
We'll continue to do what we're doing. We'll step it up in some ways and we will see if they take notice some more. And some more. And some more. Until we exhaust our efforts. There is still some time before all hope is lost for further Paragon members' involvement. That certainly is the huge loss here, zero question.
However, we're not done yet. And there is still more we can get, below the best case scenario (regardless of who is or isn't interested in it).
No. I see things as being rather the same as before, but one big difference.
We're stronger now.
We managed to change the press coverage around to display what this community is about. And we managed to reach NCSoft and have them respond to us.
We're going to do our best to reach them all again and we hope to change their minds. It may not work. We all knew this from day one.
Never trying would result in failure anyway. We have nothing to lose, but our own integrity if we don't do what we feel we must.
You don't fail until you stop trying.
Even beyond just this game, this dev team and this community, we have something to fight for.
The fact that we don't think this was the right way to handle this situation.
It's their prerogative to handle it the way they want and it is our prerogative to respond how we want. And, I can only speak for myself when I say that, I want to continue to show our commitment to the same exact stance we took on August 31, because, that is what I believe is right.
I want to get an Atlas Park 34 up on Saturday.
Help us make it so.

But if you feel that way, why bother posting?
Why not just leave the crazy folks who still wanna fight on, and go do other stuff?
Unless you have other ulterior motives for posting downer messages over and over and over.

I hope you get a response. I'm pretty sure my shut up and go away reply will follow in short order.
One man's terrorist is another man's freedom (or freem?) fighter; just as one man's exploit is another man's feature.
I hope you get a response. Wonder if for something snotty like maybe he doesn't want to completely turn this forum over to passive aggresive cyber bullies (you know like somewhere else). Or maybe he has an agenda he's trying to convince others of like he may not like an outcome, but he gets that when it comes to things out of his control he can accept a "no" answer. Or maybe he has compassion for his fellow players and wants to facilitate the grieving and healing process. Or maybe he is search of viable alternatives in a bad situation. Or maybe he is just as tried of people braying over and over to no avail as much as you are of downer messages.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
They won.
There never was any other possible outcome. They held all the cards, owned the table and were paying the dealer. It's still good to fight the fight. Doing so is more about who you are, than winning or losing. Are you someone who lets themselves be hit or do you stand up for yourself ? Our community stood up and threw everything we had at them. It wasn't enough and it could never be enough but still we tried. All in all, not a bad way to go out.

Hm. I didn't think my question would have elicited that reply, but okay. Especially given it's my first ever related to the shutdown.
I just don't understand the purpose of repeating 'game over man, game over!' ad infinitum.
I can understand the other side trying to save the game posting a lot, as they're trying to create change. But saying 'it won't work' dozens of times across multiple threads, how does that achieve anything worthwhile?
I myself am a realist. I don't think there's a lot of hope to save the game. At the same time, if folks wanna try anyway, more power to them.

Well, I still do believe that CoH will live again. EMU isn't the way I would have preferred it, but I agree I think that's where our efforts and time are best spent now.
So where does everyone meet up to volunteer services? Titan Network? TonyV should set it up so the specific part of the forum used for EMU is invisible to the general public; only those actually working on reverse engineering, etc., should be able to log in and see it. Granted, NCSoft minions could always eventually register as "fake help" there too (maybe samples of work would be required to "get in?"), but we may as well not wave a giant flag in their faces about it day in and day out meantime.
The odds have been defied before. History teaches us this. We can defy the odds again!
Will it be easy? No.
Will NCSoft put as many obstacles in our way as they can? Likely.
Will we give it our best shot? The correct answer is YES!

Yes, occasionally the odds get defied. However, those cases are a severe minority.
Also, this is no longer about "odds" per se. Frankly, it never was. NCSoft owns CoX, and all final decisions about it are theirs. Said final decision was made back in August. Everything that's happened since then is pure theatre.
This denial thing is getting really old.

I am quite sure they will not back down on it before November 30th. That would mean losing face probably and that will not happen. Maybe at some point later in the future they will consider selling it off though.

I dont mind it though but it's more annoying when some people complain about people saying game over and over but seem to find it not annoying for people to repeat it's not over over and over. I see each would be equally annoying. From a straight logical perspective of repeating things over and over regardless of the words.
I think the save the heros thing is a good thing and it's interesting to see the tenacity of the people. Although at this point it's starting to look a little less organized than usual and more like trying to internet bully anyone that dont feel great sadness and depression and not thinking about killing themselves over the situation. Really not a good way to convince someone to join the cause or even mention to someone about COX and the effort.

The way NCSoft has handled the situation feels like it originated with some kind of upper management knee-jerk reaction to something to close it down - not a well thought-out plan.

I seen a post somewhere where it outlines the benefits if NCSoft were to sell the IP. It touched on how it would benefit the community, the players, and stuff but not so much of how it would benefit NCSoft more than holding on to it for what ever reason they choose to.
Right now, it just dont seem to be in their best interest to sell it from a buisness stand point. If they can hold on to it and use it later in the future and know that the players probably will be running back, as many said, there isnt many if any "real" super hero MMOs. So if you are holding the last and only type of that MMO, I wouldnt sell it either unless someone make me a crazy nut offer that only a beyond insane person would offer high end range. So far it costs them nothing to hold on to it, tax writeoff of some sort probably, then they still can revive it later when they want to and have a player base of somesort that is looking for that type of game. Or maybe they are holding on to it because they may be actually planning on using the IP in the future, or parts of it. Or maybe they are holding on to it to save it for a rainy day when mess it the fan, they can go ahead and sell it then.
-Female Player-
This is true. No matter how much we win (if at all), NCSoft has to win bigger or else there's no point in them doing anything at all.
And in doing nothing at all? They still win. |
Over the years I saw and complained about decisions by the devs I thought were hurting the game. Doing so on the forums was always what I knew to be a losing game. Never stopped me, and every so often it seemed a few people were actually thinking about what was being said, instead of just trying to get the last word, stifle debate, or seem wise by telling people what they wanted to hear. It's also funny just how many people who put their hands over their ears and shouted people down remain, and still doing just that.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think JayboH may be correct. I've stopped getting my hopes up, as I feel there is nothing we can say or do that'd stop CoH from being shut down and never reopened in any way, shape, or form. NCsoft have made their minds up. They don't want to game live anymore, and they don't want to sell it.
