so many have left already.
I'd be playing the hell out of it, but I've been a bit busy lately.
Seriously, I'm not naive enough to think that people aren't checking out other games. But I'm also just as serious when I say that I really, truly believe that we have a good chance of pulling our Save Paragon City! campaign off successfully.
I know you guys are still coming to terms with NCsoft's announcement, but please, for the love of cheesecake, please don't give up on us yet. If you absolutely, positively have to check other games, then at least check in on news and information regularly. Please help us out in our Calls to Action. You may think they're pointless, but I'm telling you, they're not. Please take part in our rallies. Not just as a show of support for each other, but for Paragon Studios.
I really believe that at some point, the tide will turn in our favor. I really believe that there's a good chance that it has already. We have built up such incredible momentum. We have 200 articles on gaming press sites and blogs. We have famous people in our corner spreading the word out even further. For crying out loud, just a couple of days ago, Felicia Day put us out there in front of two million of her followers! And before that, Neil Gaiman put us out there in front of 1.7 million of his followers!
We have some fun events planned to keep everyone's morale high. We have some projects in the pipeline that focus on Paragon Studios, the players, and our creations. All of this stuff is coming together really, really well, and it's a PR force that NCsoft is going to have to face, and I honestly believe that they will do the right thing; it just makes good business sense.
So if you try other games, make sure you stay up-to-date on what we're doing, because when this is all over, that's half the battle. Once our game is safely in the hands of a company for which it is in their long term plans, we want you back. We need you back. And I for one will truly appreciate probably greater than ever what we've been so lucky to have.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
Irrationally, my very first thought on reading of the impending cancellation was anger that they'd announced it on the Friday afternoon of what was, for me, a three-day weekend. Way to ruin the weekend, guys!
But afterward I was glad, because I spent those days riveted to the forums. I read at first with grief and anger, but soon I began to feel a sense of wonder:
Look at all these people. Look at the heartbreak, the stories, the memories, the friendships, the pictures, the oddball character concepts, even the humor. The determination behind the long-shot effort to save the game.
And then awe. Have you seen how much is being done? It's almost mind-boggling. One blogger (Paindancer) said he/she has known Occupy movements who would kill for this number of participants -- well, yeah. I've been active in several good causes, I've stood outside in protest -- and none of them have had anything like this much momentum, this much social networking, this many bodies showing up, in virtual space or otherwise.
And so, after a few days of grieving-and-reading, and then reading-with-my-jaw-hanging-open, I returned to the game. The first day back was pretty slow, but by the next, there were more global friends online than I've seen in a long time.
And it's been active like that ever since -- less time shopping and plotting builds, more time grabbing people and sallying forth to battle for Paragon.
Are total populations down? I can't say. I'm too damned busy teaming!
As I told a friend last night, I'll sleep in December.

I notice people saying they can't log on as it makes them sad, for me it's the opposite, I get really angry that this great game is getting cancelled. All my time and effort will be flushed away without a second thought. I have given myself some time out to peruse other games which made me even more angrier CoX was shutting down. Champions/DCUO/GW2.
Champions was terrible, I can't believe how bad the graphics were for a game brought out later than CoX and the content was minimal for game that's 5+ years old.
Their player-base is far less then CoX was.
Champions budget must have been low on the development side, looks like they only have 5-10 people working on it rather than CoX 80, maybe if CoX could have halved their budget costs on development it might have continued.(I would have been willing to not get as many new features as we were to keep the game running).
DCUO, is not bad for a solo player game, it is a long cry from a good MMO.
GW2, Won't bother saying much about this as these forums seem to already have a enough fanbois taking up too much room on CoX official forums.
Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.

Playing this game any longer is an utter waste of time other than as an online chat community. And for that....far better venues.
A lot of people are playing on Test to enjoy the Issue that Wasn't.
Please buff Ice Control.
Justice had a good stab at the Really Hard Way iTrial badge, and we had a full league for three tries, with spare people each time. And there was an all-Brute teaming event running at the same time.
Now, part of that was that I announced it in advance. There's no doubt its quieter. But there are still peeps around and looking to just have fun, fill out their bucket list, or just stubbornly ride the coaster to the cliff at the end if it comes to that.
I count as all three of the above. >.>

American Steele: 50 BS/Inv

Tried again just now to get a team when i got to log in screen every server was green.
its 12:15 am friday morn or thursday night depending on your place in life.
I dont think its ever been green on every server at such a prime time.
went to atlas to offer a free PL to anyone could not get more than 3 to join a free ae farm.
No chatter on the chat channels. So bummed out.....
cancelled and deleted SWTOR only game on my machine is AOE 2 lol(dunno why i put it there)
I'm sorry. I logged in and tried to play... I lasted about 10 minutes. It was too depressing.
I'll try to get back in long enough to take screen shots of my different characters and that is probably it. The pain isn't worth it. |
This is the same for me. I log on, wander around for a bit like a train-wreck survivor, and think to myself "I can't believe it's all over..."
I keep telling myself that I'll play and join TFs and what not (I normally solo), or take screen shots of all my characters, but then I just watch a movie instead. I haven't looked into any other games though. A friend of mine wants to get me into that Star Wars thing, but I've resolved not to start another game at least until they finally turn the lights out in Paragon. I don't know whether it's out of respect for the time I've spent here, or if it's the hope that we'll be saved from oblivion at the zero-hour. Either way, I think I've got a lot of movies to watch.
Oh and I think everyone's efforts to save CoH is incredible! Especially TonyV (is he an actual super hero in real life?). I've written my letters (and convinced a former player friend to do likewise) and signed that crazy petition. I dunno what'll become of it, but I can't help but think that SOMEONE will buy this game from NCsoft. I still can't believe they killed it without even TRYING to make money from what I'd assume would be an easy sale!
Larry: Owen, what the hell did you do to my wife?
Owen: Well I don't want to say on the phone - all I can tell you is that I killed her last night.

More to the point, many people may not want to spend their last days doorsitting in your AE farm. That in itself doesn't mean the game is dead.

Your examples might not mean what you think they mean. Green servers have never been a bad thing per se.

Now I log-in, run one mission and log-out. I want to play but it just depresses me that in a short time I wont ever get to play again. I am starting to come to grips with the fact that my gaming days are likely over since there isnt anything else out there I enjoy and that this game will not exist in a few months.

Not saying this is going to happen (please try to ignore my signature because I'll change it if we save the game) but if the game does go what will happen to your toon? What will happen to the Golden Girl persona? I know main toon definitely would go with the game because she is a Thorn Sword Guide themed toon. So with the game goes the game lore and with the game lore goes that main toon of mine. So what will happen to Gold Girl?
This is me right now. I played about every night before the announcement and since then havent been able to play longer than 15 minutes. This was my relaxation after work and to be honest I have had issues even getting to sleep since this was how I calmed my brain.

I had a RL friend with a serious Second Life addiction. It took outright intervention to get her away from the keyboard and she had a lot of coping issues for months thereafter.
I said the fact that people don't want to door-sit for you does not, itself, mean the game is dead. Hell, I've never wanted to door-sit or be power-leveled -- and lots of people feel that way. It's possible that more people feel that way now that time is a limited resource.
You responded with a non-sequitur utterly unrelated to your power-leveling thesis.

Servers being green instead of yellow have little to do with people not wanting to be powerleveled and doing something else - servers being green instead of yellow means there are less people online, period.
Unless you want to claim NCSoft made stealth server upgrades right after claiming they closed the game, but that'd be quite out there on the insanity scale, even by the standards you've set...

An example of recent activity that would have had an unusual load factor was the rally in Atlas Park. Fifty people standing around generate WAY LESS server load than 50 people raiding the Rikti Mothership.

The gauges indicate server LOAD, not POPULATION. While these are related, there is not a direct correlation.
|
It is not a 1 to 1 relationship, but it is a direct relationship...as in the same direction...and though each person can alter a bit how much load they incur, it's still somewhat predictable.
So far, the ranges i observed are green < 250 +/- 75 unhidden players, yellow between green (250ish) and 1100 +/- 150, with servers going red with at least 1100+ish +/- 150.
Given /search's inaccuracy, those ranges are surprisingly reliable considering.
I'm out of town at moment so can't do a count but last night at around US peak 19:30 i saw Freedom teetering between green and yellow load and have observed 249 unhidden players (179 blue, 68 red, 2 gold side) when it went yellow.
Was surprising to see Freedom during US peak have a similar pop as if it were one of the lower pop servers on a normal day (prior to the closure announcement)...after the announcement so far i'm seeing around 80 or less on the normally known low pop servers.
We're a very emotive community, but for the corporate world that has little to no bearing. Sure there are flukes (Firefly/Serenity for example) where public outcry led to something more, but in most situations it's just like closing a Pizza Hut. It might be a cornerstone of a gathering place for 30 years in a town, but to Yum!, it's just a marginally performing store who's franchise assets can be used somewhere else.
Best thing is to go play, have fun, and post your support in hopes that will inspire some independent company to make an offer to pick up the IP. The real challange is if and when someone does show interest, then we as a community have to put our money (literally) where are mouth is.
... Hit it ...
Interestingly, the announcement of the game shutting down has actually reinvigorated my desire to play it. I also got my girlfriend back into it and managed to reform weekly runs with a small group of guys we used to play with a few years ago. It does kind of suck that everything will probably go away in December, but at least we're going to have a blast for the last few months regardless of what comes to pass.
