This is the same for me. I log on, wander around for a bit like a train-wreck survivor, and think to myself "I can't believe it's all over..."

I keep telling myself that I'll play and join TFs and what not (I normally solo), or take screen shots of all my characters, but then I just watch a movie instead. I haven't looked into any other games though. A friend of mine wants to get me into that Star Wars thing, but I've resolved not to start another game at least until they finally turn the lights out in Paragon. I don't know whether it's out of respect for the time I've spent here, or if it's the hope that we'll be saved from oblivion at the zero-hour. Either way, I think I've got a lot of movies to watch.

Oh and I think everyone's efforts to save CoH is incredible! Especially TonyV (is he an actual super hero in real life?). I've written my letters (and convinced a former player friend to do likewise) and signed that crazy petition. I dunno what'll become of it, but I can't help but think that SOMEONE will buy this game from NCsoft. I still can't believe they killed it without even TRYING to make money from what I'd assume would be an easy sale!

    Confessions

A few years ago, I used to log on as "Insane Rikti Monkey", go to AP on Virtue, and superspeed around the statue of Atlas for hours at a time while listening to "I'm Insane" by Ratt and "You're Crazy" by GnR (over and over again). Did this sometimes for two hours straight, sometimes for three. One night I ran for four hours without stopping but then I had to pee.

On the same character, during the Winter Event, I'd race around the ski chalet and whip snowballs at folks all night. I even made a special build for it. His ranged def was 75%, to hit bonus was +25%, and accuracy bonus was +139%. Deadliest character in the game with a snowball I bet.
  3. Fantastic news! I thought for sure they'd try to charge us extra for this feature. Very happy to be surprised! Hopefully, they'll throw in some alternate animations for pool powers somewhere down the road.

    Thanks devs!

I'm sure people have their own weapon types that they would want put into the game, so go ahead and feel free to give your own suggestions while this thread is here!

Some ideas I had for arcane staves would be a wood staff with some sort of jewel on the end or possibly something similar to the Carnival of Light/War Maces to give a few examples.

I hope I'm not the only one with this idea or else this will be -really- awkward

I guess after they made the broom and the pool cue, they just didn't have enough time for silly things like wizard staffs or spears.

Why two? That allows them to give two different types of rewards with different timers for different tasks. Some are given as rewards for completing certain phases in iTrials or for completing the iTrial itself. Since I don't iTrial I can't give you all of the information about what is rewarded for what. However, ParagonWiki can give you information about how to earn Astral Merits and Empyrean Merits.

Empyreans can be earned in DA by talking to Taskmaster Gabriel and then completing each of the DA arcs (in the first run through in the zone or through Oroborous) every 7 days. Completing all of the arcs and talking to Taskmaster Gabriel gains you 2 Empyrean Merits each time (subject to the 7 day timer).
Thanks, that helps a lot! I don't do itrials either so was hoping to get incarnate merits from DA (though I didn't realize the rewards were on a week-long timer like the SSAs). Good to know!
  6. It looks like it's possible to convert Incarnate Threads to either Astral or Empyrean merits. Is it possible to go the other way around and trade incarnate threads for incarnate merits?

I'd like to unlock some of the costume junk, but the incarnate merits are much harder to come by than threads in Dark Astoria.

And (while I'm here) why are there both Astrals and Empyreans? They look to be used for a lot of the same stuff, so why not just have one or the other?

I don't know of any where a teen teamed with a teammate that has a kid that grows up to team with the still-teen original character, but I wouldn't be surprised if it existed.

We're playing a game set in a genre that always treated time rather... fluidly... changing with the author's whim. I consider all CoH inconsistencies as just the devs being true to the genre.

I'm all for time passing in comics (and CoH) - I'm just not used to people "aging" in real time. I mean, Peter Parker should have died of Parkinson's disease years ago (even sooner since he has the proportional age of a spider, hehe). Not realistic, but that's what seems to happen in comic books, and I’m cool with that.

But you're right - aging certain characters to a certain point in order to get the story told is par for the course. I just wish they could have kept Penny as a kid, since I liked that character and there are so few young NPCs in the game.

I guess I never thought about that. I just got the impression that she was junior-highish from her appearance and dialogue in Faultline and the impression stuck. I'll probably continue to think of her that way too, and be annoyed every time I see her "growed up" version (though it's hard to play the game with my fingers stuck in my ears and my eyes screwed shut chanting "lalalalalalalalalala...")
  9. [QUOTE=dugfromthearth;4256166]I have them unlocked. I've never even tried one.

I don't play one because I have no interest in them. The problem is that they are not superheroes. They are not my character. They are this alien thing that I have no interest in playing...

This is my reason as well. The coolest thing about this game is that we have the freedom to make any superhero we want. Kheldians seem "pre-made", and I have no interest in playing someone else's character.

Characters have changed and evolved as you progress through story missions (like Faultline and Fusionette's careers as heroes), so Penny's just following the same pattern. The fact that she exists as a Faultline delivery girl and a Phalanx member at the same time is indeed pretty timey wimey, but I hope they never "fix" that by removing young Penny: the Faultline storyline's one of my favorites in the game.

I did like how Faultline and Fusionette show up later and seem to have progressed as super heroes. Penny's progression, however, seemed a bit drastic.

But yeah, I hope they don't get rid of her young version either because the Faultline arcs, (and Penny Yins in particular) are some of my favorites too!

She's at least 18 now, maybe older.

I met her in Faultline in March. Now, three months later, she's all grown up and dressing like a B-movie slattern? Whether she was introduced six years ago or not, she shouldn't be the only character in game (or in comics) who ages in real-time. Just my opinion of course.

I agree, because Penelope Yin pisses me off. She's like 13 in Faultline when you meet her (or appears to be anyway), and then suddenly she's in her twenties and joining the Freedom Phalanx! This load screen just keeps reminding me how silly that is.

And those that are, are probably perfectly happy starting in Mercy. There's also the perceived difficulty of the enemy groups in Praetoria, though I don't think that was a significant factor (though the 'issue' was probably magnified by the need to solo everything with fewer and fewer people starting in Praetoria).

The storytelling in Praetoria is really fantastic, though, so I was sad that GR didn't do better. Still am!

I agree that the writing in Praetoria is great. It's just too bad that it's in Praetoria.

See, the reason I don’t play there is because I really can't bring myself to give a rat’s *** about an alternate dimension. Paragon has been my home for years and that's the town I care about. In Paragon, I'm a superhero - in Praetoria, I'm either a rebel or a storm trooper. But no matter which side I choose in Praetoria, it doesn’t have anything to do with what matters to me – Paragon, and the “real” world (as opposed to an alternate dimension). Even if you make a character who's immersed in Praetoria's lore, you eventually have to leave it all behind and come to primal earth anyway.

I'd much rather they had made Praetoria just another zone, accessible from Primal earth, so that high level characters could go fight the invaders on their home turf. As pretty and filled with great stories as they are, four zones is just too much of a waste of effort to be locked away from the "real" game.

All I know is that I'm sorely disappointed Going Rogue didn't do what they hoped it would, and that Praetoria wasn't as popular as it might have been. Personally, it's my favorite content in the game, and since it kind of flopped, I doubt the story will expand beyond the 1-20 zones in which it currently exists. Yeah, there's First Ward and the upcoming Night Ward, but those kind of exist in their own little world, referencing events in Praetoria proper but open to all factions and existing within it's own area and with it's own lore. It doesn't have the same feel as the 1-20 content.

I personally think that adding another starting area, completely separate from Paragon, was a lousy idea. People already complain that red side is a ghost town - we didn't need yet another world to further disperse player population. It may have even done more harm than good. If a new player buys Going Rogue and starts running around in Praetoria, finding themselves completely alone, they could get the idea that CoH is a dead game and tell all their friends as much. They might even end up robbing a gas station or start smoking the reefer.

Right. I guess I was just thinking that since a set bonus from a PVP or purple IO will stick around even if the power it's in is greyed out, procs from those sets would still work too. I guess not though. Thanks again.

Yeah I know, but if the Panacea proc acts the exact same way, I'd rather have a 10% boost to endurance instead of a 7.5%. Had the PVP IO acted as I'd originally thought (working even while exemped), then I'd probably keep it. Oh well, at least I don't have to blow a respec to shift the slot someplace else.

I think I'm just going to ditch the thing and replace it with a Performance Shifter proc. I'd originally thought that the heal keyed off your total modified hit points, and of course it doesn't, so it was already sort of a let down. Anyhow thanks!

  20. I already had Health six slotted with stuff so I put the Panacea proc in Physical Perfection, thinking that since it's a PVP IO, it'd go off no matter how low I exemp (didn't take Physical Perfection until 47). But I'm running the first signature story arc (exemped to level 20), and the damn thing just sits there! Did I buy a lemon, or do I have to lick the connectors or something to get it to work?

It was my understanding that PVP IOs don't care what level you are (like purples). I have a Shield Wall +3 resistance as well, and it's slotted in a power that is grayed out at the level I've exemped to, yet it's still working. What's the deal?
  21. I've never wanted to be a villain - there's enough of those in real life.
  22. Unless I'm playing a stalker, I always put an attack on auto. For Katana or Broadsword, it's Parry. For claws, it's Follow Up. If I'm playing a blaster, I do exactly what VKhaun does and keep a blap on auto (in case something creeps up on me, I can just switch targets and smack him real quick).

On any other character, it's usually my fastest recharging melee attack. I got into the habit of doing this back when my computer was crap and I played a tanker. The lag was so bad that I wanted to be attacking (working Gauntlet) as often as possible even when I couldn't see what the hell was going on - you know, so my team mates wouldn't think I was slacking.

I never put things like Hasten or even Practiced Brawler on auto. I've tried it, but I'm just so used to getting near a guy and letting an attack fire off, it just felt weird. Like when you're surfing your favorite website and decide to switch hands.

Oh, and Happy 100th Post to me!

That said, I hope (for the sake of people who said that) the whole "I turn off XP" or "it should be made harder" is hogwash to look cool on the forums, because I can't possibly understand this reasoning.

If I play 40 hours and end up with 2 level 50 characters, I have experienced just as much content as if I would have played 40 hours and ended up with 1 level 50 character doing the exact same tasks rewarding me for half of the exp, and I also got to enjoy greater diversity in my own characters - which in turn gives each encounter a bit more variety.

About the only argument I could see is if you want to read the stories and are worried about outleveling them, but I don't think you can claim to love the game, period (and insinuate people who don't play like you don't by doing so), if you only enjoy a small part of it. And, if you don't think stories are a small part of CoH, I feel sorry for the time you spent playing a game where 90% of the time is spent punching dudes.

If you enjoy leveling quickly, that's great, but I personally don't. I'd rather gain power slowly and enjoy each level at a casual pace. Sure I could get multiple characters to 50 in the same time it normally takes me, but then I'd just be stuck with another 50 with no new abilities to look forward to (I'm not much into incarnates).

For whatever reason, I like playing just one or two characters at a time (seems I'm immune to altitis), and if I like those characters, I don't want the ride to end. The only 50 I still play is my main - the others I haven't touched in years, even though I loved leveling those characters. Maybe it's because they seem "finished" to me - I dunno. Anyway, it's not so much the "content" that I'm after - it's experiencing that content with specific characters that I enjoy playing. Although I guess there is Ouroboros, but then why rush to 50 just to go back and do what I could have done while leveling up?

Also, I didn't mean to insinuate anything about people who don't play like I do not loving the game. I'm quite aware that my play style is not the norm, and that's cool. I only meant that I turn XP off during double XP weekends to keep from leveling too fast (and thereby "finishing" the character too soon). And yeah, I still read every arc, though I wouldn't still be playing this game if I didn't enjoy punching hordes of dudes to get the job done.

I feel the same way, even going so far as to turn off earning XP during double XP weekends. I love playing the game - no need for me to rush.
