So are we getting a new login screen every issue from now on?

It seems like that Statesman one wasn't up for that long, and the new one is very Night Ward-themed, which obviously isn't gonna be the big new thing forever.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.

They should give us a dropdown so we can select between backgrounds.

Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be

I agree, because Penelope Yin pisses me off. She's like 13 in Faultline when you meet her (or appears to be anyway), and then suddenly she's in her twenties and joining the Freedom Phalanx! This load screen just keeps reminding me how silly that is.

Larry: Owen, what the hell did you do to my wife?
Owen: Well I don't want to say on the phone - all I can tell you is that I killed her last night.

I really like this idea.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

Issue 8 (and Faultline revamp): November 2006

Issue 23: May 2012

She's at least 18 now, maybe older.

I met her in Faultline in March. Now, three months later, she's all grown up and dressing like a B-movie slattern? Whether she was introduced six years ago or not, she shouldn't be the only character in game (or in comics) who ages in real-time. Just my opinion of course.

"People assume that time in Paragon City is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a game-playing, character-development viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey... stuff."

Characters have changed and evolved as you progress through story missions (like Faultline and Fusionette's careers as heroes), so Penny's just following the same pattern. The fact that she exists as a Faultline delivery girl and a Phalanx member at the same time is indeed pretty timey wimey, but I hope they never "fix" that by removing young Penny: the Faultline story's one of my favorites in the game.

"Now, I'm not saying this guy at Microsoft sees gamers as a bunch of rats in a Skinner box. I'm just saying that he illustrates his theory of game design using pictures of rats in a Skinner box."

I did like how Faultline and Fusionette show up later and seem to have progressed as super heroes. Penny's progression, however, seemed a bit drastic.

But yeah, I hope they don't get rid of her young version either because the Faultline arcs, (and Penny Yins in particular) are some of my favorites too!

I'd like it if they did that - it'd be like the "cover" for each Issue.

That was my thought exactly.

I kinda wish they had done this sooner and taken opportunities to homage iconic comic book covers of the past.

This should be a reality already. I hate the new login scree, and the forum banner for that matter. Penny still looks bloody stupid, no matter how good the art quality itself may be (and it is, credit where it's due)

That's my major complaint, too

Next she'll be shoplifting, and before you know it she'll be off to rehab and court-ordered community service. In a "very special" Issue.

Faultline and the RWZ are now pretty much "legacy" arcs, as they no long reflect the current situation in the game world.

I think that id'd be helpful if the devs added text to the start of each arc in those 2 zones, telling players that the events in them weren't current.
They've already started a similar dating idea with the new Belladonna arc, which tells players right at the sart that it takes place after the events in DA and the DD Trial.

I guess I need to visit RWZ - I didn't realize that was Penelope. I like the look - she looks so darned happy to be charging into battle!

I'd usually consider this unnecessary, as the devs do say that time is represented differently through the game- those starting in Praetoria tomorrow are still under Tyrant's thumb despite his fall this issue, after all. However, Faultline zone is level 15-25. Penelope Yin Task Force is level 20-25.

That's quite the quick transformation.

I just hand wave the disconnect away with the most obvious explanation:

Before Ms. Yin made the PsychoChronoMetron broken, she made a "big" wish.

Problem solved.

It doesn't happen often, but I have to agree with you GG.

Please note - Penny was doing deliveries for her dad in Overbrook before the FIRST rikiti war.

How old do you think she was that dad let her zip about town in this kind of city?

Not too different from comics, though.

Kids seem to grow up fast, then stay young adults forever... well, when it suits the story. Some teens stay teens for decades. Heck, some teams have teens stay teens for decades while their teammates have grown up. I don't know of any where a teen teamed with a teammate that has a kid that grows up to team with the still-teen original character, but I wouldn't be surprised if it existed.

We're playing a game set in a genre that always treated time rather... fluidly... changing with the author's whim. I consider all CoH inconsistencies as just the devs being true to the genre.

I guess I never thought about that. I just got the impression that she was junior-highish from her appearance and dialogue in Faultline and the impression stuck. I'll probably continue to think of her that way too, and be annoyed every time I see her "growed up" version (though it's hard to play the game with my fingers stuck in my ears and my eyes screwed shut chanting "lalalalalalalalalala...")

I'm all for time passing in comics (and CoH) - I'm just not used to people "aging" in real time. I mean, Peter Parker should have died of Parkinson's disease years ago (even sooner since he has the proportional age of a spider, hehe). Not realistic, but that's what seems to happen in comic books, and I’m cool with that.

But you're right - aging certain characters to a certain point in order to get the story told is par for the course. I just wish they could have kept Penny as a kid, since I liked that character and there are so few young NPCs in the game.

Yeah, I don't treat most of my characters as if YEARS have gone by. Penny's aging means that Shandora Ward's been in college for 5 years! I mean, I know that's somewhat common for undergrads nowadays, but she's still a FRESHMAN! Chase just looks at Penny Yin and... well, he feels very OLD all of a sudden.
