Yes, the lag with only 100 or so players in the zone was exactly as I've come to expect from this 8-year-old engine.

Thank you Arcana for your efforts. Too bad the game ends with a wheezing gasp.

Here's the Joystiq article, but in short: running at a loss and gutting projects while also moving away from PC and consoles and towards mobile and social platforms.

Disney's dabble in the MMO space was also generally a failure.

CoH/V is a poor fit for Disney's current approach to video games.
Shhhhhhh, you'll dispel the hope and dreams.

Meanwhile, I'm getting screen shots and bios together for my sex-toy themed SG "The Mechanized Dildettes" to send to Mickey. Wait till the House of Mouse sees how creative we can get with flesh tones and the boob slider in the costume creator!

  4. I really don't understand all this personal hatred of an individual. For all anyone knows, he's oblivious to this games closure at the specific level. But regardless, it was his company's game, not yours. You simply had lease-rights to it.

And I'm not knocking anyone that uses the tool. I've already made GREAT use of it! Thank you for helping to ensure cheating remains a part of any future for this game.

Nice try at covering up what you did there with IBtT's name. But now that I've seen you for what you really are, I'm disgusted by you as a person.
  7. Y'know, I had totally discounted all the "Titan members are racist" comments as hyperbole. Elitists maybe, but racists was stretching it.

Until GG's post above. Wow. You guys were right. Sad little person there.

There's a reason why Virtue's population eventually exceeded Freedom's. PUGs on Freedumb are a nightmare of immature players that play poorly. By comparison, Virtue is PUG heaven. We tend to be friendly, mature and intelligent. You will have fun here. Transfer today.
I've a dozen toons on Virtue. You are exaggerating. It's almost a barren wasteland, even for RP in Pocket D. Not worth a transfer.

  10. Assuming this works for some future derivative of COH....

So many, many ways to cheat. Twink out a toon, load it with all purples, max inf, export. Rinse/repeat.

Any designer foolish enough to let people import their toons are going to destroy their game economy on day one.

PvP in this game was always unbalanced or broken in one way or another. Each "fix" just broke it further until i13 killed it for good.

Suppressed travel was never needed in PvE. Just a stupid move on the part of the Dev team IMO.
  12. I really used to enjoy the combat mechanics pre-travel suppression. Aerial combat while flying, jousting, kiting, running while attacking, etc.......these were very unique models for many years. When COH devs decided to enforce rooted combat, the game lost the only part of combat I actually enjoyed. Thereafter, it just became a Napoleonic infantry formation affair....stupid and mindless for any ranged combatant. I switched to melee thereafter.
  13. Wondering if we shouldn't start promoting that people use their remaining server xfer tokens to migrate to a single server for one last gathering?
  14. You mean mindless, skill-less button mashing, suppressed travel powers during combat and a built-in targeting cheat called the TAB key?

Combat was moronically over-simplified in this game.

As City of Heroes/Villains made Profits for the other Games...

If NCSoft decided, for whatever reason, to turn Payments back on and Keep the Game...

    Would You Stay?

The White Comet - Pinnacle Server
    No.

    1) Staff and talent are gone. No future left for this game at this point in time. None.
    2) Server population is incredibly low, almost a ghost town on even the popular servers like Freedom and Virtue. There's nobody left to team with. Turning payments back on would do nothing to address this. A multi-million dollar advertising campaign announcing the "grand re-opening" of COH -MAY- mitigate this, but see number 1 above. Ain't gonna happen without there being a REASON to come back to COH.

And then, finally, but perhaps most importantly, I'd be verrrrry suspicious about their motives in turning the game back on again.....

  16. Nothing abusive. Maybe a shot of truth serum to get the real inside story of their decision to kill the game, but I'm betting its a pretty short story and ends up being a simple "Because we wanted to...." sort of answer.
  17. In the past 3 weeks, I've logged on several times each day. I don't really play anymore, as there are seldom any teams available. I have solo'd a few missions to complete some arcs I wanted to but that's about it.

So I'm wondering what everyone thinks the last few hours will bring in terms of server population? I saw Arcana's Beta server event announcement, so I'm guessing that will be the only place the die-hard actually log into for the final lights out party? I'm betting the vast majority of players don't even know about the Beta server, let alone how to access it. So lets assume that will be a "forum community" only type of event. Too bad really, sounds like fun.

But given how low the server population is already, is anyone planning to transfer to a single server for their own lights-out party? If so, where? I'm a member of 8 different SG's and looking at the rosters, I'm the only one of about 300 active players to have even logged in since early September. If that ratio is indicative of what's really happening, I'm not sure its worth even bothering to be here for the lights out moment.

I'm betting we have less than 2500 players turn out come closing time.
  18. Your post looks like a bitter COH player trying to rain on Wildstar's parade. If that was your objective....congrats?
  19. -Wasting too much time on PeaceBringers. They still suck.
-Deleting over a dozen 50's to make server slot room. I should've just transferred them to dead servers to make room.
-PVPing more pre-i13. I didn't initially enjoy PVP, then fell in love with it, then watched in horror as one issue broke it forever. Never did understand why devs just didn't revert those changes when they realized their "fixes" drove down the PVP population rather than help it.
-Marketeering more. I did it some, but never had the patience for it. Was a rush when it worked though.
-Meeting that one player for the RL drink that was offered.....and then seeing their picture on Facebook later (sigh).
-wasting far too much time on these forums.

    An Update

None of the Titan club seems to understand that lowball offers of any size only makes permanent closure more attractive to NCSoft. The writeoff value of the entire asset is much, much higher than likely any offer that has been tendered to date, and that's before taxes. Heck, $1 million likely would barely even cover the legal costs of selling the IP.

All this clamoring about NCSoft rejecting "great offers" just reeks of amateur business acumen. Prospective buyers must calculate the writeoff value of the asset (in context with the size of NCSoft) and then start their negotiations from some percentage of that.

What I want is to still have a CoH to play on December 1st. Baring that, it'd be nice not to loathe the forums for the last few days we have left. You have an entire lifetime of bickering left in you, if that's your jolly. Knock yourself out once they pull the plug.
But I've only got 17 days left to post on these forums. So is your enjoyment of using the forums somehow more important than mine?

The past eight years on these forums have been quite pleasant. Please reconsider turning the last three weeks into a nightmare.

    Thank you.

Not a perfect source, but it still represented an strong player base with an active interest. How many of those were VIP vs F2P would have been difficult to evaluate. After that was the simple math of 15*number + maybe 1/4 of that actually using the store significantly each month. I used a figure of 10 for that monthly store number. Multiply by 12. That produces an annual gross income of 5.25 million a year. When I gave my estimate I definitely stated that it was a "rough" estimate. That means based on limited information. I notice you omitted store revenues.

500k was my valuation of the IP NOW. Any company that tried to buy it at this time is going to have to hire new staff or hope the re-hire the previous one. Deal with the negative publicity this fiasco has caused and a myriad of legal issues. The game engine may have licensing issues and might require a complete rewrite. That's NRE - Non-Recoverable cost of Engineering. That's right, that cost is never recovered. The question would there be enough Return On Investment (ROI) to justify purchasing the IP in its current state at a higher price. 500k was generous.
NRE = Non RECURRING Engineering. Of course it's recoverable, assuming sales for that effort are large enough to support it. Most companies even capitalize this expense and amortize it over the life of the project. You don't seem to understand the basics of business finance for software companies the way you keep mis-construing standards of business communication. Were you self-educated?

When taken in context of the realities of revenue recognition rules, however, I think most of the numbers out there regarding actual revenue and operational costs for the game are way, way off.

Indirectly, perhaps, if you filed a complaint that resulted in a lawsuit that made national headlines. But even that is a stretch.
