Good advice overall, but I admit I chuckled at this part.

In playing both The Secret World and GW, I've noticed that overworld enemies are mostly just time sinks that are not worth dealing with. You don't get a lot of rewards for killing them, and fighting them is often a slog. But the way they are positioned and respawn, you are forced to deal with them constantly. I don't know how GW2 is after the starting areas, but I keep getting really annoyed with TSW and the million pointless enemies I have to fight just going from place to place. I am almost never defeated in an actual fight, it's almost always because I didn't feel like dealing with enemies 1 by 1 and tried to run through the area, and ended up pulling the whole zone.

The only times I've been killed running thru a zone is when I chose to go thru a zone where the NPC's greatly outclassed me. As for fast travel I make heavy use of the teleport system for instant travel to places near where I want to go.

What, Ranger? :P >.>

Honestly, my ranger is only 21 and got 4 of those levels cooking (yay, cooking!) and I hardly feel like I have a handle on her gameplay yet. To me, the gameplay really stretched and distinguished itself post 20. Also, I duo with a thief, which means he's in melee and I can stand waaaaayyyy back and be lazy and stationary with my bow >.>

I am swapping my secondary weapon from shortbow to greatsword though, so I think I'll get a lot more workout, heh.

I found this thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/c..._it_out_to_be/ extremely helpful.

I find that a weird criticism of any MMO, heh. I mean, fighting mobs tends to be sort of the point, no?

That being said, I find that I mind fighting mobs LESS in GW2 because 1. I'm scaled down, so they're still challenging (yeah, that seems backwards, but I would rather get a good fight out of it rather than just one-shotting dudes as they fire their popguns at me) and 2. they tend to drop crafting mats I want.

I only watched the first 5 minutes or so (18 minutes?! I got too much ADD for that! LOL) but you didn't do anything that stood out really glaringly to me. I find my guardian the LEAST mobile of my critters. BUT, I would keep an eye on the following - when you drop to half health, if your mobs aren't almost dead, heal and swap to your tanking weapons (1H+shield/focus) so you stop taking mad damage for a while. It'll be slower to kill guys with your 1H, but if you've already whittled them down some with the greatsword it shouldn't be awful. And if you see someone winding up an attack, or they drop an area effect on you - yes, for god's sake, dodge :P If you don't like to double-tap (that's the ONLY way I dodge, but I use a Zfang gamepad) then use V. Re-bind it if V isn't convenient. But you are totally IMMUNE to damage for the couple seconds it takes you to roll. Why wouldn't you use it instead of slowly backing out of poison clouds and taking big windup hits? :P

This bothered me a fair bit in TSW, because I found combat to be a real slog to get through there, so every random fight was just a tedious timesink stopping me from getting to the fun bits.

In GW2 I find the combat is a bit faster and with a better flow, so I don't mind stopping to fight. But I still just run through/past the aggressive hordes sometimes - as long as they don't have a 'cripple' effect, you can outrun most enemies (something that's not true of most wow-like MMOs), and they usually don't chase for very long before they reset. If you've got a decent speed buff slotted it's even easier to just ignore everything and run (my ranger keeps a warhorn in her inventory for travel purposes).

I re-bound dodge to the shift key and found that a lot easier to use (and as a result, I use it a lot more), to the point that it's become second nature for me to dodge when needed. I don't know why anyone thought 'v' was a good default key for something like that.

If you are talking about the boss fights, how can you even see what they are doing half the time to be able to dodge? I like what you are saying about swapping when down to half life as your heal is on cooldown - that makes sense.

Same here. The more I learn about it, the less interested I am.

GW2 okay. Its much WoW like and less GW like. Especially the PvP, which I hate. But it's free after initial buy so I just hop on once in a while.

How is Guild Wars 2 free? *edit* For that matter, how are Guild Wars or WoW free?

Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 are both Buy to Play MMOs. You buy the box, you get all the content. There's nothing gated behind a subscription that needs to be unlocked either through a premium account or some equivalent to veteran rewards. There's a cash shop, but it can essentially be ignored; basically all it sells are a handful of cosmetic items that are much more limited in scope and usability than CoH's costume pieces, some extra storage space, and character slots. As far as I've heard from a few years of dev comments, there aren't going to be any cash-shop restricted content, like the First Ward or the SSAs. It'll either be free content updates or full-fledged expansions.

It depends how big the boss is and how many people are around :P I pan my camera back as far as I can and try to keep an eye on the bosses animations, but if they're too tall so I lose the ground/red circles, then I can't. Likewise, if there's too many people fighting a boss so the fx totally lose my toon (some events are just like... where the heck AM I? What's going on? There's just this flashy thing in the middle of the screen... it's like COH without the ability to turn off particles!) then I back out and swap to something ranged if I can. Or I just smash whirlwind over and over, haha

From what I understand, can't you actually convert the in-game currency into the cash-shop currency?

Yup. That's how I bought a character slot, a cosmetic armor set (sexy pirate! >.>) and a bank slot. I expect I'll be able to get everything I want from the cash shop with the silver-to-gems converter, I just can't have it all RIGHT NAO

Cool, I knew the reverse was true, sort of, being able to sell gems at the market to other players for gold.

I'm pretty sure the two processes are one and the same - when you buy gems with gold it's because you're buying it from the players that are selling them for gold, i.e. there's not a separate system where you pay your gold and then new gems are created by the system.

Actually got a chance to play the game a lot (boy am I sleepy >_>) since buying the game last week, all I was able to do was make a couple characters and do a bit of tutorial...

I'll agree with a lot of the reviews and say the game has it's problems. But it is pretty fun. That's really all I can say at the moment.

Anyway, what servers are you guys on that are playing?

I'm on Tarnished Coast - the unofficial RP server, like Virtue. In fact, I stayed up past 3am last night because I ran into some Norns randomly RPing around midnight and stopped to say hi... it was pretty fantastic

You have to remember that the EU and US have their own set of server locations... so it makes sense to have 2 unofficial RP servers (just like Union is the unofficial EU RP server)

Ahh, I didn't realize he was talking about a EU-RP server. I was just totally confused!
