The CO Community & You
Atlantea, it's because you're in Texas. My roomie and some other CO players did some trace-route research, and there's an issue with two pipeline providers, Time Warner and Cogent, who are for some reason losing a crap ton of packets in their data hand-off. A Time Warner engineer (not a support tech) has the trace route data from the players and has opened an investigation as of last night.
(I can't believe I'm helping with CO problems, but you're pretty awesome so I guess it's okay. But still, LONG LIVE CITY OF HEROES!!!) |
*IDEA*
Wait... The server farms for CoH ARE IN TEXAS...
Where are the servers for CO?
This is true. There are things I think need blocking, though. Robot cowboys with their lassos for one.
I was messing around with offensive builds last night and survival powers outside of defensive passives are pretty viable, and going with an offensive role and offensive passive means dealing out a lot of damage. I do like having block options like force sheath (to get endurance from every hit) or the darkness block which provides a lingering damage resistance buff. |
Those cowboys are a huge annoyance, though, for sure. And granted, you'll have to block more in the lower level range, when you have fewer tools to deal with bad situations. And granted, ATs are more squishy as a class than free-form characters.
It's just that I prefer to look at block as a supplement rather than a staple mechanic of the game. The fact that you can reduce your damage by ~75% (last time I checked, which was admittedly a long time ago) with the press of a button when you get in a jam is a good thing, unless you believe that the game is tuned for every character to be doing it all the time. The game isn't tuned that way.
Actually, this is probably a better analogy: Block is like inspirations. You can use them liberally or conservatively, but generally you don't need to use inspirations except in rare situations. In COH, when you're in a tough spot as a squishy, you might pop 2-4 Lucks. In CO, you press shift more.
Really? Because City of Heroes has no problems.

And this is actually a specific area in Texas, but, not going to announce your location on the forums.

Boston, I think my roommate said.

That would explain a lot, though. It also would explain why COH has ALWAYS run extremely smoothly for me. I never even thought about that.
(I say this because me and Atlantea just became global friends last night LOL.)
No kidding! One of the many, many reasons I always felt so spoiled by this game. It's always run smooth as glass!

Y'know...
About a month ago, I was starting to get some TERRIBLE packet loss during the daylight hours to the point of not having net connection at all sometimes between 3PM and about 6 PM.
And my provider is Time Warner. The problem did clear up just under two weeks ago and I'm no longer suffering packet loss between me and the upstream server.
Related issue?
No no. It's okay. I'm in the Dallas area. No big secret.
That would explain a lot, though. It also would explain why COH has ALWAYS run extremely smoothly for me. I never even thought about that. |
Seriously, though, good stuff from Captain-Electric. Glad to know that at least the problem has been identified. Hopefully it's resolved soon.
Anyway, off to work. *Salutes everyone.*

Yeah and I over-reacted. I was just SO incredibly frustrated. Sorry about that.
Assuming this is really the issue (and it seems likely), then my recommendations for CO go back to what they were.
I'm honestly still mulling things over, so I may go with an Earth-1/Earth-2/Earth-ZZ/Earth-Pony solution as well. Still, inspiration struck, and I went with it for that little snippet.
The survivor guilt would make for some decent, if emo, RP potential, but it does have a strong potential to snowball. |

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
You're using the word "wrong" in a strange way there - CO is Jack's "I was right, you were wrong" letter to the CoH players - condemnation is all it deserves.
|
... but that's the norm for you, I guess. Nothing anyone has ever said on any topic has ever had any effect on you, so I won't waste any more time with you.
You just don't know Jack.
Edit: She's not worth it.

When the EU forums were merged with the US ones, her US ban should have been retained. She was banned for a VERY good reason.

GG was banned from the NA boards? Since when? I've been popping in to read the defecation that occurs on these boards for....years now. I've always seen his/her/its posts here.

Their entire Electricity powerset, for example, is pretty much CoH's Electric Blast, but without any of the powers that make Electric Blast unique or interesting (no Aim, no Short Circuit, no Voltaic Sentinel)
|
CoH's electric blast was gimped for its entirely pointless secondary sapper power.
Which did absolutely nothing since enemies don't use energy the same way we do.
Besides, Aim is pointless in CO. You never completely "miss".

Doubly, triply odd when you consider how far CO departs from many of Jack's design opinions on CoH.
If CO is a letter to CoH players from Jack, its a letter he wrote while never holding the pen, written in a language he didn't understand, to people he forgot meeting.

^ Didn't Jack actually walk away from CO before it was finished to go work on STO? I'm sure I remember something about that...

To be fair, the lack of aim and short circuit is made up by the set actually being worth a ****.

The fact of the matter is that while its easy to invent narratives for people you don't like, the truth is Jack is more of a high level idea guy: as far as I know he simply doesn't know enough about systems design to be capable of "making statements" with an MMO's design. That would be not too different from saying the president of Electronic Arts is making a statement about the evolution of the west coast offense with the stat values of the wide receivers in Madden 12.
