First off, TonyV, thanks for helping us hold onto hope. I play both Aion and City of Heroes and I must say I'd rather see Aion go then CoH.
I'm not deleting anyone :3 even if there is no hope of saving this game from the whims of some ******* stockholder. All our characters will keep on fighting for Paragon City or for Lord Recluse without us. Its just the portal from whence we visit them from time to time. So, along with saying farewell to Commander Shepard in Mass Effect I will be saying my goodbyes to all my heroes and villians who I've worked hard to lvl and progress.
I havn't given up yet! I am still joining the rest of the community in their efforts to save CoH.
TonyV, you guys are incredible. Thanks for all your efforts to save what we have.
Will this only work for characters we can play? Most of my characters are locked due to not being VIP.

I would never delete, just can't bring myself to do it.
That being said - Tony we greatly appreciate all the work you and the others with you are doing, wish my code skills were up to par so I could offer some help.
I hate to bring it up though, but just wondering about bases and if you think there might be any way of saving them and their storage...
Either way I'm storing/stashing a great deal of my remaining hancies on toons just in case. Don't want to put more on your plate then is already there.

your best bet is to still go into your base and do a short demorecord to at least keep record of it till the folks at titan find a way to work with it

Question - do we have to actually log into the characters to extract them?
Because folks who paid month-to-month (like my hubby and I) can't turn our VIP'ness on and can't unlock all of our characters at this point to log into them even for posterity screenshots

As for dupin' rares, I guess my initial thoughts would run along this line.
First, let the export code try to save as much as it can, and hash tag it...
You can never have too much data if there's a risk of never having it available
again.
That said, at *import* time into whatever passes for CoH-Reincarnated,
What your character has slotted in the export build, you get...
What you have in inventory, and in influence - Bye Bye (maybe some across the board
initial allotment(s) for imported chars would be fine).
But, let's put it in perspective people. Come Dec. 1, you have exactly bupkiss....
No Game, No Toons, No Shinies, No inf... Bupkiss...
If (and it's an astronomically Huge "if" imho), they can actually pull the tech,
the IP, the server/client code together to actually have a playable game, I for one
would be pretty damned thankful for that... If they can import my long-time
toons into it as well, I'd be ecstatic.
If I have to make my 50B-100B inf back at that point, and re-stock my inventories,
shucky darn... At least I'd be doing it on my favorite (resurrected) toons...
I can totally live with that.
The fact, that some folks would even consider taking advantage in such a situation,
sorry - Zero Respect For Them... That is just wrong on so many levels I don't
even want to contemplate that.

Yeah, I'll be honest here - I care about my characters and the game as a whole, not my "loot." If I have to start building from scratch, I'll start building from scratch. Better than not having a game at all, I'll tell you that much.

I would never think about deleteing my characters. I have worked very hard on the bio's and the characters in general. That would make me cry more then i have already. I really hope that everyone that is trying soo very hard to keep this alive will succeed in their attempts. I will forever be a City player and major fan.

1. From within the game client, FRAPS video record your character in the character selection window, and spin the character around so you can see it from all angles.
2. Consider a 3D capture of the character using the information we're assembling here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=296033
Its still in the rough stages, but we can export 3D models from the game, even from the character select screen. We don't have the full details of how to take the capture and reconstruct exactly what the character looks like, but its the only thing I can currently think of for capturing the appearance of a character that cannot be logged in.
3. If you have demorecords that include those characters, demorecords will still be playable when the server goes down.

I know its just a game .. but, it was awesome to live in a comic book for a few hours a week ..

My plan is to get all my enhancers out of base and onto first 12 characters in list, that way even if "frankensolution" only gives me back 12 Virtue characters without any base access I have 99% of loot.
I cannot bring myself to play game anymore. That is not cause I do not like the players. I just get this ball of ich inside me whenever I think about what these smucks have done.
As far as costumes go I just need good front or 3/4 view of my best designs over the years. (not that many really lol) No, there are some wonderful things that have evolved in my CoH style I want to grab. I can draw and paint, and especially my last design that meshes vampire and technology in a version fully worthy of "Keith Thompson's Drawing and painting the Undead" (yes, plug, get this book!) I can recreate 99% of what I have done over the years. The things I cannot see or forget I can alter on canvas to what was in my head that CoH wouldnt allow me to do.
In a way CoH has kicked me out of the nest and now said "Fly ******" I needed that artistically. However my geek friends I spent so many evenings with will be scattered to the four winds. I have lost a community that regularly (very regularly) gathered as a geek family. The red hot hatred that burns like a thousand suns crying out for vengeance against injustice and tyrrany.... Okay, I am off track here.
Grabbing my stuff, putting on a few characters in 1st row, grabbing screenshots. I will miss you guys. So much. Sad now.

It doesn't get power customization, unfortunately, because that's kept server-side except when you're editing it. So if you have some color combos that are difficult to re-create you'll probably want to save them.

The full base is saved in the demorecord file, including contents of storage bins, so it can be recreated from that. However if we end up having to go with the contingency plan, I imagine bases will be something down the line rather than right at first, so keeping the enhancmenets you really want on-hand is a good idea.

I sold a bunch of my ill-gotten gains and went nuts with prestige conversion.

But don't give up hope! And don't delete them. There's a very real chance that the locked characters, even on the Exalted server, may be unlocked before the game shuts down.
We'll be readying the export utility ASAP as an emergency stop-gap for people whose VIP time still hasn't run out. Expect it in the next couple of days.

With a collection of .xml (character) and .cohdemo (sg base) files, Titan Network will be able to accurately recreate nearly all player assets in a new system.
