Please don't delete your characters
Deleting any of them sounds crazy to me, since this game isn't going anywhere. You hear that NCSoft? Not. Going. Anywhere.
Tony, I've said it already before, but going to say it again. You are the Hero my heroes look up to.
Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.
Thanks TonyV
I have no idea if it is possible, or realistic...but..if you guys could come up with an Exporter to actually load the characters..to see them in 3d or something..
Keep up the good work.
Oh man, when this is all over, I am so going to exploit this. I hate to admit this, but when I saw the picture of you with your kid, I thought, "Well, damn."
Today, we're all in the good fight together. All petty battles are meaningless and we must all come together to save our very existence. These past few days, I've been touching base with people that, frankly, I've cussed at a lot more that you and said that there's no time for that now. Just like the threats we've seen virtually played out in the Rikti War Zone, Dark Astoria, Pocket D and other such places, there comes a time when you take up the cause of people you never imagined you'd be working with and fight for the opportunity to argue over who the heroes are and who the villains are another day. |

Question: How do you intend to prevent duping when people move Shield Walls and superior ATIOs and 2b inf between their 30 characters before they snapshot them?
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Fascinating. I would love to be able to save my character data. On a pseudo-parallel effort, I've been working on trying to save the appearance of my characters in a format that doesn't require the game in this thread. Hopefully you guys will succeed and that will become redundant, but just in case, the more ways to preserve things the better I suppose.
For the Mac users I'm wondering if its enough to install the client in Fusion or Parallels to do the export. It doesn't really matter how fast the client runs at that point, so even if the result is laggy or jumpy the important thing is if the Titan export tool works in the virtualized environment, you'll have your data.

Thanks Tony, Thanks for fighting the good fight
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
As it's being developed now, you run the tool. You log in to your City of Heroes account and pick a character. Once you get in the city, you hit a button in our tool, and it takes a snapshot of that character and exports it. That file will contain data about your character's name, server, archetype, origin, powersets, slotting and slotted enhancements, inventory (salvage, inspirations, enhancements, influence/infamy/information, experience, etc.), a complete description of your costume including body type, scales, and customization options, and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I'm probably leaving out that Guy Perfect knows the innards of.
|
Also, would the tool have the ability to save things bound to the account for later reinstatement? Things like unused global character unlocks; number of character slots per server; Paragon Rewards information; market purchase history; full Account Items list; and remaining Character Items list.
Just putting that out there in case it got overlooked in the chaos. The sooner you think of it the longer you have to work on it, right?

I'm sure they either have something like that in mind, or will steal the idea the first chance they get. But I suspect their first priority is the export code: we should not presume that its a matter of cosmic law that we will in fact have until November 30th. No one has officially made that promise to us. All I've read is the intent is to sunset by the end of November.
The clock is ticking, but none of us can see the hands on the clock.

You know... I don't even care if minor things were lost. It was like when the game switched to Freedom while I was unemployed and couldn't subscribe. I was slightly disappointed in the things I couldn't do, but it was nothing compared with being able to play again.
So if a move loses my stuff in the auction house or my Paragon Rewards, I won't mind as long as the game is playable.
Brilliant! This gives me hope for the future, whatever it may hold for CoH.

Yeah, you know what? You're absolutely right. It's just stuff. Stuff can be gotten back. But being able to play... that's what matters.

So I'm really glad TonyV's people are doing this for us; even if we can't save the game itself, we'll still have our characters.

The programmers at Titan are smart cookies. If it was me, I would add a hash signature to the end of all exports so it could be verified the export information was not hacked after export. There is no reason to attempt to alter your stats in the export if its only going to be an archive for the character, but if it eventually gets uploaded into a game server one day, the verification hash could be used to ensure that only unaltered exports are put back into the game.

In the end, for the ability to save my characters I am willing to risk some people doing this. But if there was away to prevent it, it might help sooth the economy if the game stays live.

Thanks to @EnsonsDeath for the GVE code that made me VIP again!
Empty all my enhancements. My main's build costed 19 billion inf, and I don't care. I'd gladly play the game without enhancements for as long as it takes to get them implemented. Hell, I'll play the game if the only power implemented is Brawl, and I'll organize a Hami raid with it.

You suck so bad.
I don't know, but I pointed this out and the brain trust will work on it.
Also, I really appreciate all of your kind words and support, and I'll never turn down a compliment. But can I get a "HELL YEAH!!!" for Guy Perfect and Codewalker? I'm not kidding, pour on the love. These guys (Guy Perfect for this particular utility) are geniuses working 14 to 18 hours per day way beyond any crazy skill level I've ever seen before right now. They're both paranoid headcases and won't give me their addresses or else I'd post them so that you could shower them with stuff. You know, maybe a measure of paranoia isn't a bad thing in their cases...
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I will gladly praise Guy Perfect and Codewalker for everything they have done and are doing.

Thanks for the work guys. I wish I could be of more use than just a guy to spread the word and offer funds.
I am not touching my characters. Just give the word on the tool being uploaded.
What people don't know much about is the fact City of Heroes is now going underground.
Could possibly make video game history as well.
Fight The Power
Regarding Mac users: you'll need to run the game in a Windows environment to export information. You can do this with Parallels Desktop if you feel like being fancy, but the game can also be run in self-contained virtual machines since the graphics are done in OpenGL. You might consider Oracle VM VirtualBox or VMware Workstation for this task, though I'm not an expert on what works best. I'll have more information before it's time to export everyone.
Failing all else, find someone you trust who runs Windows and have them log into your account. It may be a violation of the terms of service, but that really means beans nowadays.
- Character name, Title(s) and Description
- Server and Global Handle
- Archetype, Origin, Alignment and Dimension of Origin (Primal or Praetorian)
- Inf and XP (from which level can be derived)
- Current selected costume and build numbers
- Enhancement, Invention Salvage, Recipe and Vault Reserve capacities
- Currently held Enhancements, Inspirations, Salvage (all types), Recipes, Vault Reserve and Incarnate Abilities (even those that are not slotted)
- All Costumes currently available to your character
- All Builds currently available to your character
- All Badges your character owns, but only when your personal Info Window is open
Auction and e-mail storage are intentionally being omitted as well, since it amounts to busy work. If you want items recorded, pull them out of storage and have them on-hand before exporting the character.
Also, would the tool have the ability to save things bound to the account for later reinstatement? Things like unused global character unlocks; number of character slots per server; Paragon Rewards information; market purchase history; full Account Items list; and remaining Character Items list.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. So there's 50 more Shield Walls on the new server than there should be. It won't be the end of the world. (-:
And frankly, there's no way to prevent it for sure. But I imagine most people will be honest, though that's just my imagination.
You guys at Titan Sentinel are freakking awesome.
Also, anyone on a Mac, find a friend to loan you a computer so you can save your characters. Dagnabbit, we don't want to lose you if the game survives!
I'm not saying give a trusted friend who owns a PC your account info so they can log in for you. Technically. I'm saying borrow a PC and do it yourself.
Yes. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
