Please don't delete your characters

I would never delete my babies!

Heck, I've got a 3-ring binder of MIDs build printouts for all my characters. That baby's going on a shelf when the game goes down.

I never had any intention of deleting my characters, I may only have three of them, but I worked pretty hard on them, and knowing how hard you all are working to keep this game from slipping into the night without a fight brings a warm fuzzy feeling to my heart.

Anyone giving serious thought to using their characters in a commercial venture of their own someday should still give some thought to deleting them. As long as they exist in the game's storage, they're owned by NCSoft, even if the game is no longer active.

It may be unlikely, but they could sue people who use their character names and likenesses again. If all rescue efforts fail, that is.

I only say this to creative types serious about reusing the ideas they came up with here in their future career. Once the game goes down, your chance to delete them will be gone, and everything is still up in the air as to whether it will be deleted.

It's something you will have to think about. I fully realize the chances of them seeing something that may look a bit too much like a CoH character and diving into archived characters to find it, then suing the artist using it is slim to none. Then again, I expect a lot of comic artists never expected to have trouble with their former publishers when it came to rights to their creations.

IP is important, and I'd think long and hard before leaving an idea you're attached to in someone else's hands.

I would go so far as to say don't delete the game files from your hard disk unless you really need the space. If someone ever managed to get an emulator running you'd want to have those game files available.

Saving all of your costumes and power customizations is a pretty good idea, also.

Yep.

Oh man, when this is all over, I am so going to exploit this. I hate to admit this, but when I saw the picture of you with your kid, I thought, "Well, damn."

Today, we're all in the good fight together. All petty battles are meaningless and we must all come together to save our very existence. These past few days, I've been touching base with people that, frankly, I've cussed at a lot more that you and said that there's no time for that now.

Just like the threats we've seen virtually played out in the Rikti War Zone, Dark Astoria, Pocket D and other such places, there comes a time when you take up the cause of people you never imagined you'd be working with and fight for the opportunity to argue over who the heroes are and who the villains are another day.

If by small you mean nonexistent as NCsoft has repeatedly shown next to no involvement in the game and would likely be unable to recognize anyone from the game save for Statesman and Lord Recluse themselves.

They have also repeatedly shown the desire for money. I don't fully discount anyone whose main goal is going after more of that.

I actually wasn't thinking clearly when I made my first post — I completely spaced off the fact that I do have the game installed on a cheap Windows laptop sitting next to my Mac. I just don't play the game on it. Being accustomed to playing on a Mac with a 20", 1680x1050 screen makes it difficult to try playing on a laptop with a much smaller screen. But it will serve for using your tool. Nevertheless, I suppose my question is still valid for my fellow Mac users, like blackjak there, who don't have a PC handy. Of course, that also brings up the question: will the site even let people download and install the client any more?

blackjak, unless you specifically want to play superheroes, there's always WoW, I guess, and I've been told that the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online MMO will have a Mac version. While I'm a huge superhero fan (been a comic collector for 25 years), I've come to the conclusion that CoH's genre isn't what's been important to me — it's the gameplay and the community.

I'm saying this because of two reasons. First, as has been hinted in rumor threads elsewhere and even if it weren't a rumor it would still be possible, another studio may very well pick up this game. If so, it's entirely possible that the servers won't go dark on November 30. If that happens and the game keeps chugging along, you'll be kicking yourself for doing something permanent that carries forward after November.

Second, at the Titan Network, we are working on tools to export your character data in a form that, even if the servers go down November 30 but we're able to revive the game in some form, will be usable to recreate your character on alternate servers if need be. If you go deleting them or deleting all of your stuff, you'll lose the opportunity to do that and, if the servers are recreated at some point, you'll have to start from scratch instead of having your characters documented in a format that we can use to re-import them unscathed.

We'll be talking more about this as we make progress on our toolset--we're not keeping it a secret, but we're still in the process of working on it at a furious pace--but in the meantime, like I said, just please don't do anything permanently bad to your stuff.
I was wondering... would this be useful for ALL CHARACTERS IN THE ACCOUNT, or only a few of them? cause I got 31 50s, for example.

It's more complicated than that. We'd have to not only find a Mac guy, but specifically a Mac guy who is intimately familiar with the internals of TransGaming's Cider compatibility layer. At one point in the past, we looked into developing tools such as Sentinel for Macs, but the low-level nitty-gritty documentation for Cider is next to nothing, as it's closed-source software and apparently they only share that information (as far as I can tell) with companies like Paragon Studios that contract with them to work with them on projects like City of Heroes.

If by some miracle there is someone who is intimately familiar with the internals of TransGaming's Cider compatibility layer, give us a call!

Meh...Not that interested in fantasy stuff. Heroes are my thing. I'd maybe play a sci-fi game, but this was IT for me. Ya know...

Woohoo, I am all for hope. I am glad there are some people seeing alternative options. I was never going to delete. I refuse to use that and ended up with a stupid amount of alts, like over 100 and whatever Nethergoats problem was he was prolly in the wrong

As it's being developed now, you run the tool. You log in to your City of Heroes account and pick a character. Once you get in the city, you hit a button in our tool, and it takes a snapshot of that character and exports it. That file will contain data about your character's name, server, archetype, origin, powersets, slotting and slotted enhancements, inventory (salvage, inspirations, enhancements, influence/infamy/information, experience, etc.), a complete description of your costume including body type, scales, and customization options, and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I'm probably leaving out that Guy Perfect knows the innards of.

When it's done, you will have a file that has enough data in it to accurately recreate your character, including all of his or her stats, inventory, powers, slotting, costume, etc. on a different server. It will also include some kind of checksum and encrypted value to detect any tampering with the file, so that if the time comes when we import these characters back into a server's database, you won't be able to, for example, give us eight copies of the same character, each tweaked slightly. That could lead to jerk hacking, and the last thing we want is for people to be dupin rares because next thing you know, the game it well be gone to the Americans. I will try to talk Guy into making the file some sort of human-readable format, though, so that if you want you can print it out and reminisce.

To export 31 50s, you'll need to log in 31 times, once for each character, and click the button on the tool. Without access to the back-end database server, that's probably the best we can come up with.

Good to know. I was doing that manually by saving their costumes and builds, but an unified file format would be great.
